Should I restart?

Post » Mon Nov 30, 2015 12:47 pm

This is my first Fallout 4 game so I have no clue what I am doing. I am trying to figure out if I should just start the game over? Here is my dilemma. I am only at Level 7, but it appears I am a bit of a wanderer. I have wandered around quite a bit instead of doing some of the main campaign and quests and it seems to have gotten me into quite a bit of trouble since I have met up with all kinds of menacing creatures and in the process have burned through just about all of my ammo for everything. I am wanting to go and clear out the Corvega Plant, but honestly I'm not sure how hard that mission is without a lot of ammo. I'm not completely out, but let's just say I don't have a lot. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I always like to keep a back up melee weapon for conserving ammo. as far as getting more ammo, check random piles and buildings, there is bound to be ammo boxes. One thing i've noticed is that raiders tend to have more ammo on them than it takes to kill them. so killing raiders with a pipe gun is a good way to get more ammo for your pipe gun.

unless you are playing harder difficulties lot of early quest have a lot of cheap ammo. you should keep 3 to 4 weapons for each ammo type as well then you shouldn't have any problem

If you really want to restart, now is the time to do it as you're only level 7. As a chronic restarter... I feel your pain.

That said, if you DON'T want to restart, just switch to a different weapon and scrounge some ammo. Buy any you see from vendors (.38 rounds are relatively cheap and are used in many of the more commonly found pipe weapons. Use VATS as often as you can. Make every shot count.

I have almost. 2000 .38 rounds myself, as I'm a hoarder who hasn't used a pipe weapon since I found my trusty laser rifle at around level 13. They're really common. You can almost always find them on raiders.

I rename favourite weapons to made it really easy to keep track of what are my go-to weapons and what is salvage:

eg:

  • .45 Rifle
  • .308 Sniper
  • FC Laser Pistol

I don't need more than one weapon of an ammo type

(though I store some spares back at base)

And there is no need to kill mole rats with the more valuable ammo (5.56 / Shotgun / FC)

There's no shame in starting again. If this is your first FO game then you have learnt the basics and you won't repeat those same mistakes. I tend to find with a game like this that it is quite helpful to do the first few main quest missions before going out on your own. That way you have a good idea about the game and its mechanics.

Now for the noob question. I have wandered quite a bit but have yet to come across any vendors. Where can I find them?

There is a roadside cafe on the road to diamond city. Also there are some wandering traders, you will see them with a two headed cow called a brahmin. There are also traders at diamond city.

I played both FO3 & New Vegas (albeit a while ago) and I'm on my third restart:

1st was level 7 and had completely misunderstood the perk system.

2nd I was level 10 but had recycled my armour and ammo crafting stations and mis balanced my specials so it would take me forever before I could craft anything.

Third time lucky I'm pretty happy my character and got quite a nifty little plan up to level 50.Only just hit on the settler / charisma limit so rethinking some umm "inefficient" building practices but I'll be playing this one through regardless.

Not sure if that helps but just so you know you're certainly not alone having a restart if you feel you've backed yourself into a corner. 馃榾

You really don't need to restart. Ammo is a little scarce in the beginning, but as long as you loot bodies of enemies and check around their camps for ammo boxes, you should be able to keep going forward.

The North-West section of the world map has generally lower-level enemies, so if you stick to this area you should find encounters you can handle which leads to ammo you can loot.

The Scrounger perk (Luck 2) helps with finding more ammo, so it's worth considering in the early game when you really need it.

On my fourth or fifth character. Right now I am just goofing around an on a couple of my characters I just cheated the hell out of everything to see how it all works. I won't commit to a long term game until after a couple of patches just to make sure there are no save game issues especially considering all the base building you can do. Also they really need to fix the issue with ash piles and corpses not always disappearing. The molerats I killed at Red Rocket are still there.

Don't know if you've found one yet, but there's a diner close to Concord if you follow the southeast(?) road out of town. It's the road near the church if my direction is off. It's got one merchant and is a caravan stop (possibly just for Trashcan Carla) I've also come across caravans on the road leading to there.

I also know there's merchants in Covenant but I haven't gotten there yet. And you're certain to find the most and best in Diamond City

Edit: Just realized a poster above me said the same thing. Oops!

You want to have a few different guns when you start off. .38 ammo is the easiest to find. I'm playing on very hard and never found ammo to be an issue.

Remember the game gets harder the further Eastwards and Southwards you go. A direct run to Diamond City (for an early trading hub) could be a good idea too.

Many players restart BGS games many times. This is especially true for first or second plays since these are considered by many people to be "test" characters for learning the specific game.

As for ammo, it's actually fairly easy to acquire, at least for the cheap stuff. Various locations in Concord and elsewhere respawn containers including containers with ammo, so even if you are running low, waiting a bit and rechecking containers can get you back to where you want to be. I've had one entry house on Concord respawn three times in one day. That's a bit much, I think, but various places do respawn, anyway.

Thanks for all your replies. I restarted and I'm already up to Level 8 in half the time I was before. I didn't wander too far off the beaten path, pretty much made a B line for my quests. Ammo is not a problem now, well except for my 10mm pistol which I really like. I think knowing more about the perk tree helped. I didn't even know you could move down in the perk tree at first. I thought it was a progression from top to bottom? Live and learn.

I took a hunting pistol and turned it in to a sniper rifle before doing the Corvega mission. Learn how to snipe and use criticals to conserve ammo.

My advice for anyone starting is get to diamond city so the vendors are available then explore. Stick to .38 caliper bullets, and try to mod a sniper rifle to take those early on. At the beginning damage per bullet is the most important for ammo saving, mix that with the most popular bullets and you will end up with thousands by the time you hit level 15.

Ideally you want a rifle converted to take. 45 bullets as, provided you stick to. 38 for a while your stockpile will grow and you can end up with rifles that fire .45 bullets that do well over a hundred damage.
