Should Shopkeepers be able to clean up their stores?

Post » Mon Feb 14, 2011 8:24 am

Should stores and houses get cleaned up if there's a mess made in them?

If you don't know what I'm talking about, I mean when you knock over items and they go all over the place. YOU can't fix them, because it's considered stealing, so the mess is always going to be there prettty much. Should the items get reset every in game week or so?

Yessss. But realistically, the game shouldn't consider "lifting an item" stealing anyways. Only until you lift up the item and trying leaving with it ;)

It would be nice to see, but that sounds like it could be complicated to complete. If I'm wrong, then YES!! that would be great

I suppose the game could automatically reset the item locations within 24 hours after you leaving the shop.

Or straight away :D

Player: *bumps into table and sends items flying across the room*
Shopkeeper: Oi! Be more careful you big oaf!
Shopkeeper: *picks up items and puts them back on the table*

But yeah, I'd love to see a reset of items in shops and homes as if the owner has cleaned up his/her house. But this should only apply to items that are still there in my opinion. Otherwise it's easy for the player to rob the place at night, then wait and rob the place again when all the items are mysteriously replaced. :P

Well if they made it so that you can move items with the Grab key(if it will even still be in) without it being considered theft, then that would help solve the problem, but the OP idea is good too.

Fallout 3s "Pick item up" system was annoying because i could take something run into a corner and steal it...a bit unrealistic unless there was a "area" you could take it in, and if you go outside that "area" the shipowner calls the guards.

I think that shopkeepers should say something when knock something over like "Hey, put that back" maybe not mandatory but it feels odd when knock everything over and the shopkeeper is still idleing.

I'd prefer if you steal something from a shop, after about a week, a similar item will take it's place on the rack.

It could work with an item tag, all shop items which you do not own will be tagged with it, after so many hours those tagged items will be reset. Any items you drop there are not affected by the reset.

This already happens when the cell gets refreshed, which happens if the cell is not entered for I BELIEVE 3 game-days. It happens for every item which is displaced, but if the item is removed (taken) it does not get reset. So in actuality it already happens.

It would work if the outside world was connected to the store's interior. So if you move an item outside of the store, the merchant would warn you, but a few seconds later without entering the store area again, the merchant would call the guards or he would start punching you. Lol. It would require a lot of animation for the merchant to pick up all the different stuff realisticly and put it all back from where it was supposed to be. :obliviongate:

To me, anything, however simple, that increases how dynamic and immersive the world is, is a great idea.

Yeah, with all this time to really make a better engine, I wouldn't be surprised that shopkeepers have that ability now.

Having it reset once you've been gone for a day or so doesn't seem like a bad idea. Leaving your stuff in a public space doesn't make much sense anyway, so that shouldn't be a problem. Stolen items would be replaced eventually. Though rarer ones should be replaced at a slower rate, don't know how much more difficult that would make the mechanics though. On a side note for your houses you should be able to hire a maid, once hired items dropped on the ground appear in a chest or something, and things knocked over get put back into place.

Personally, I think that's exactly what should happen. Shop floors shouldn't be free storage. If I owned a shop and someone dropped perfectly good equipment on the floor, I'd be selling it as soon as I could find a buyer.

Yeah, like when the store is locked up the next morning it should be clean. Damn irresponsible shop keepers!
