Should Skyrim have an OPTIONAL hardcoe mode?

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 9:08 am

I thought it would be awsome to have an in depth hardcoe mod for The elder scrolls Skyrim. I realy liked the hardcoe mode for Vegas and I would want a new hardcoe mode for Skyrim. I just would want it a bit more real so I have to eat more often that 3 days lol. But yes it would add realism ant to help us survive we will probably have a crafting system and bedrools and the ability to make a fire! I just thought this would be cool and I wanted to know what you thought I would realy like one.

Does anyone have any ideas to contribute?

I'm not sure about having to eat more often than in New Vegas, but I would love if Skyrim had a "hardcoe" mode. It makes all those food/drink items much more meaningful.

Why not? It enhances the chalenge of the game and satisfies some of the role-players needs.

I voted yes simply because I am Pro-options. It's something I might not use in Skyrim, although I have been playing New Vegas on hardcoe. I'd have to know more about what kind of hardcoe elements they would include, and how it's handled. But as far as adding the option, for sure.

Definitely.

I don't much care what it is, so long as there's a pre-built wrench in the code that the modders can give a good twist. When users do these sorts of things from scratch it's usually script-based and clunky.

...not that Bethesda won't use scripts to do it.

IMO, if it was in NV, it will probably be in Skyrim. IMO.

I really really hope so I think it would add alot of imirsion into the gamplay with that feal off I need to stay warm. Then like oh crap it is sundown I need to find a place to hide from nocturnal animals stay warm eat and sleep. I just feal like it would be nice. It would help with no fast traval so you do not die half way to a location. Unless you have pay for where they will feed you. That and you need to not go scarhunting to be cool like you need to try and not be wounded.

Some problems with hardcoe and Elder scrolls. Unlike Fallout arrows and potions have weight, unlike the wasteland water and food is common and easy to get. The bought or looted potions heals instantly but so does spells and self made potions is more effective.
Sleep simply require a sleeping bag, sp unless you explore a giant dungeon you would not be affected much by hardcoe.
Trying to add strict rules like only water from wells in towns are drinkable and you need food from stores, food items you loot or gather will not do will simply made it annoying.

Why? It wasn't in Fallout 3, which Bethesda did, then Obsidian added it in to New Vegas.

Options aren't really Bethesda's strong suit. IMO.

So, what you're saying is... You're pro-choice ? <_<

hardcoe mode my suggestions:

- No Fast Travel
- No Quest Compass
- Remember to eat and drink
- Map out in the rain = Map wet and useless
- Camp out in the wilderness only heals if you bought a bedroll
- Swimming while more than 50 % burdened = sinking
- Everything weighs something ( maybe except keys ) + realistic weight for arrows. No one carries more than 30 arrows, because it is impractical.
- Injuries and crippling hits are grievous and debilitating.

Okay, I'd probably go crazy trying to play the game if it was this realistic, but still. I'd do it, and enjoy it sort of masochistically.

There should be a hardcoe mode, but there needs to be more incentive to play it than in New Vegas. An extra achievement is just lame. Maybe they should give you an extra reward after completing the main quest on hardcoe or something.

Rather than a set "mode," a list of hardcoe options as proposed here: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1162593-role-play/

I enjoyed hardcoe mode in New Vegas. It seriously dissuaded things like waiting repeatedly for a triggered event to happen, and promoted keeping a sleep schedule, planning out journeys, and having to set aside income for things other than weapons, armor, and repairs. I'd love to see it expanded on in Skyrim.

pro-choice here as well

how about a variable hardcoe mode.the player could choose how hardcoe they want the game to be.

have to eat more often that 3 days

You didn't have to eat in oblivion period. Eating was just something that the AI did to seem more lifelike, and players did so they could RP. Food provided little health benefits and that was rare as most food just boosted your fatigue so you could pretend to have 100 Athletics for 2 seconds. I'll admit, when I played my Khajiit Mage, I made it out to be the kindest, most saintly person on all of Nirn, which made all the sweeter to be running through Oblivion eating demon hearts to negate what damage they would do to me. I completely lost it and rofl'd when I caught myself screaming at the Demora on the TV "Wretched Hell-spawn!! I'LL EAT YOUR HEART!!!!" while beating it with my fists. (Hand-to-Hand and magic just for the lulz).

Good times.

Back on topic: if there is a hardcoe mode, and if there are companions, then they all need to have their essential flags removed from them when you recruit them, just like in Vegas. Potions of Health/Sorcery/Respite need to be over-time effects instead of insta-restores when you use time, and you need to regularly eat food and sleep to survive. What would be REALLY awesome would be a deployable sleeping bag so you can make your own camp. Also, cooking needs to find it's way into Skyrim.

I know it's not nice to pick apart someone else's argument, but I just feel the need to tell you which is just impractical.

- No Fast Travel: New Vegas wouldn't even do this. The objective is to make the game tougher, not more tedious and drawn out.
- No Quest Compass: That would actually be fun, but then all of the quest text would have to be as descriptive as Morrowind or you'll have to add in a LOT of dialog to help the player find their way.
- Remember to eat and drink: I can't disagree with you in any way here.
- Map out in the rain = Map wet and useless: That would permanently destroy your map or at least reset everything you discovered. This would also have to muck up your journal and quest logs to be consistent with the map being all soggy.
- Camp out in the wilderness only heals if you bought a bedroll: That's cool.
- Swimming while more than 50 % burdened = sinking: That would be like having the Ring of Burden screwing with you from start to finish.
- Everything weighs something ( maybe except keys ) + realistic weight for arrows. No one carries more than 30 arrows, because it is impractical: That would be all right, after all you ARE firing bows, not automatic rifles.
- Injuries and crippling hits are grievous and debilitating: The limb system would call for a major overhaul to not only the game's development, but to how it plays. You don't want this to feel like Fallout too much. I think replacing this with an increased tendency to use poisons that can paralyze, blind, silence or ect. you by the enemy would easily take care of this part.
