Should I start saving for an upgrade or just buy for PS3?

Post » Tue Apr 06, 2010 5:25 am

Hey :)

I have played all of the previous TES games on PC and although my system isn't bad it is starting to show its age a little and I'm scared that with my current set-up that I won't be able to get the best out of Skyrim. So I have been thinking would I be better looking to overhaul my gaming rig or should I save myself the time, effort and money and just buy it for the PS3??

Whats everyone else going to be doing? New Rig? Console? Existing Rig?

Im a 360 player, and enjoy it, so Id say that, but if its a tie between those two, go for the upgrade pc. Bethesda always screws the ps3.

If you really like mods, upgrade your PC. If the vanilla game is enough for you/don't care about mods all that much, get it for PS3.

Imo it's relaxing able to be playing on sofa and w/ 360's controller. But still graphics and mods means lot to me. So I'll buy new GPU so I can play with pc.

If you don't care about slightly better graphics and mods take ps3.

It's a bad time to be doing a major upgrade of your PC http://owiily.wordpress.com/2011/05/06/rumour-microsoft-to-unveil-xbox-720-at-e3/. Multiplats aren't going to develop significantly in quality as the current console hardware is ancient. Save your money until after the next generation and buy a new PC then. That way you'll have the edge over consoles for ~5 years without upgrading at all.

I'm a PC gamer through and through, and definitely happy with how Skyrim shape up to be thus far; but I'd say it might not be a bad idea at all for you to consider buy the PS3-release first, and see if you actually liking a lot how the game turns out. Then you might opted to upgrade your rig and buy the GOTY version or something at some point later.

Skyrim is designed to run on the same hardware that Oblivion would run on. So if you could run Oblivion on your PC well enough, you should be able to run Skyrim just as well. The only reason to upgrade would be to play Skyrim better than you could play Oblivion.

upgrade, you may actualy save some money buy upgrading, but its highly unlikely
some ps3 are 300 dollars, that will get you a fairly good processer and graphics cards, and ram isnt that expensive it would be like 20-40 dollars

Oblivion runs at "full" on everything on my existing Rig, I would have expected Skyrim to require something a little newer and more powerful then my existing rig but if you guys say that I'm not going to need an upgrade then thats awesome news!

Wonder if it will run on my iMac lol!!

Absolutely this.

If you want to run it in MAXED settings with a higher screen resolution, then sure, drop some money on some RAM or a new GPU. But by no means will you HAVE to if you're running Oblivion. Unless you're 'barely' running it. If indeed you're 'barely' running it, I'd say you might just 'need' an upgrade.

That makes no sense at all. Console and PC hardware are considerably different from each other, you can't base your PC system on what the next generation Xbox is going to be like. PC hardware right now is so far ahead of the consoles, that you don't need to worry at all about playing catch up to them. It will be the other way around in fact, and I strongly suspect that the next Xbox won't even come close to what the best PC rig has to offer right now. They'll be striving for a balance between cost and power, which most likely means using hardware that's already out of date on PCs. There's no way they're going to stick in a top of the line video card that currently costs several hundred dollars. They'll settle for one that's a generation or two behind that, and is only a fraction of the cost.

The only thing you might want to consider is getting a video card that's DX11 capable, since it's been confirmed that Skyrim will use at least some of those features. Though that won't do you any good unless you're using Vista or Windows 7, as DX11 won't work with XP. Other than, the requirements are probably going to be pretty much the same as Oblivion. But since no one knows for sure at this point, your best option is to just wait and see what the requirements actually will be.

No you don't. You can build a GREAT gaming rig from scratch for $500-$1000 depending on what you want. Sure you can spend more for extra fluff, but you don't have to.

Upgrading is the best choice.

Even if you have never installed any mods before, there are without a doubt going to be some sick mods for Skyrim and you will be missing out on this mod goodness if you don't have a PC.

Also, DX11, 1080p or better FullHD resolution will be possible on your PC, perhaps even more goodies like an official hi res texture pack, SSAO, Anisotropic Filtering. Makes the console version (which is only 720p) look like crap.
