Should I take action or not?

Post » Sun Oct 31, 2010 7:00 pm

So, on Valentines Day, a friend of mine was shot during a drug exchange. We were friends since we were in diapers, and I used to talk to him every day to give him something that's not so messed up when he lived in a place that was messed up in and of itself. The reasons why he got shot are still unknown, the most likely explanation is that the gang dealing was suspicious of him. In any case, I want some revenge. I have two options. I can call the ineffective law enforcement of that city, or I can go down to that city myself and help my friends crew find the people who did this and arrest them ourselves. What would you suggest? I know the latter option is far more dangerous, but the police are just HORRIBLE there, and I want to make sure the guy who did this goes behind bars.

The first one even though most people would secretly want option 2...

First one. Or do nothing, revenge isn't required.

The second one will get you hurt, killed, or in trouble with the law (even if you do the "right thing" it'll just be seen as aggravated assault anyway. Unfortunately, it isn't as easy as it is in video games to give the bad guys their comeuppance).

Op, no offence, you're 14 years old, exactly how did you intend on arresting a gang member?

It says I'm 14 on my page?

No, please don't think I'm an actual 14 year old trying to look cool. I'm not entirely sure when that setting was popped on, i was born August 14th but 1986. not 96'

Yes...

But even if you aren't, I wouldn't recommend doing anything with your friend's ambiguously titled "crew".

Confronting someone with a gun in a threatening manner is brandishing. Threatening someone with a firearm can be classed as aggravated assault and the dealer has grounds for feeling threatened enough to shoot in self defence.

Don't do it unless you're really sure you want to spend time in jail for a drug dealer. Seems kinda unfair that way. Besides, the best revenge is to live well - let that be a priority instead.

It's all unfair. Knowing you can't touch someone like that, even though they deserve it.

As much as i would like you to do something as awesome as option 2., i mean it so bad ass it could be in a movie (although the ending would most likely be you being shot)

Do the second, because while not as awesome, it will probably be more effective.

Do you think your friend would be proud of you for getting yourself killed while trying to avenge his death? Or do you think he'd like you to live your life and leave it to the people who's job it is to arrest people to handle it?

Let the cops handle it. If even try to get revenge on your own, you'll wind up dead, injured, or in jail.

Go live your life and don't get involved in stupid [censored] that will get you killed for no good reason. If your friend got shot during a drug exchange, he shouldn't have been involved in a drug exchange. Harsh? Maybe, but no matter how close you are to someone, that doesn't mean you have to follow the same path as them. This world needs more educated and selfless individuals, and less "crews" looking to exact revenge on other "crews" that are better at doing illegal things than they are. I'm sorry about your friend, I really am, but you're going down the same road. Join the police force, move up the ladder, and better the police force that you say is ineffecient, then go after those people. Then you'd achieve revenge, and better yourself, and other peoples lives.

And he could have a Rocky-like montage throughout the process of him becoming a cop! Epic.

PS: Sorry about your friend :(

Heres an option 3 for you:

GO FIND YOURSELF A NEW FRIEND / GROUP OF FRIENDS!!!

If this supposed "friend" wants to get involved with drugs, and gangs....then let him do it. Darwin or the next bullet will remove him from the playing field.

No, I don't feel sorry for your friend. He is doing something stupid getting involved with dangerous people and will get what is coming to him. If he is smart after this incident he will change his situation. And if he doesn't.....well......

Yeah.

At the end of the day, your friend put himself in a very dangerous situation, and wasn't lucky. He may not have pulled the trigger, but some responsibility does lie with him: it was his choice to be there, it was him who chose that path. Seeking revenge, whether by illegal methods (assault, murder) or 'assisting' the police (tracking people down or whatever it is your considering) is somewhat pointless. Instead of risking your own life to bag an eye, why don't you think about ways you could have an impact on the root cause of your friends death? Doesn't have to be something major like joining to police, there's probably organisations you can volunteer for and stuff :).

EDIT:

I get the impression 'es dead. And don't forget that criminal activities do not preclude being a nice person, and there are many ways to end up in the criminal world (many of which do not involve a clear choice, but are a slow progression).

The 2nd option since it'd be more effective and since you'll have backup. :gun:

Real life isn't Rambo or Call of Duty dude; especially if you have no sort of training in dealing with people that are probably armed. True, most police don't do jack [censored] that's useful in the world, but you should at least give that a shot before taking things into your own hands.

 I laughed till tears, that's the funniest thing i've seen this year.

On topic, second option sound like a quite bad idea. Police may be ineffective, and may lead to nowhere, but that's the right thing to do  This may get a bit too idealistic (and possibly a bit naive), but as a member of society your duty is follow the law. Does it help to become a criminal to stop a criminal? (except if you're Batman :P).
