Should TES be more of an advlt game?

Post » Sun Jun 12, 2011 9:08 pm

After having just played Witcher 2, yes... Fantasy-realm RPGs should shoot for an advlt audience. I love the 'gritty' feeling to low-tech worlds. Oblivion was FAR too "sterile" of a world. Even the thieves guild was a 'noble' establishment. Its hard to get immersed in such a world for me. A good game needs shades of grey, not the pure black/white evil/good mentality.

Me, I like some variety in the games I play. If "a lot of games are moving into this direction nowadays", and it's "like The Witcher / DA / etc"...... all the more reason to stand out and not just copy all the "modern trend" grey/gritty clones.

Honestly I don't see it being that big of a deal. Swearing and crap is fine honestly I don't see why it is a big deal but as for nudity well thats a bit more advlt for their audience.

Swearing and nudity isn't what advlt themes are about...

... you must be too young to understand.

Too bad for you. Sorry, i know that sounds cold but The Elder Scrolls isn't a child game in my opinion and i don't want to see Beth cut down on advlt content (and i am not just speaking about nudity here) so the kids can enjoy it. You will just have to wait. If your parrents is more concerned about a little nudity (lets face it, i don't think we will get hardcoe pormography or anything  ) than content like the Dark Brotherhood then i have a feeling that they either don't know what you are playing or have a very different idea about what is approaciate for children compared to me. I am not necessarily saying that a 14 year old shouldn't be allowed to play Oblivion, maturity vary, but it does seem a little odd to worry about nudity in games with quests like whodunit?

Well i can only speak for myself but i don't want unrealistic gore. I want realistic gore... though with some artistic freedom ofcause. But over the top gore like in Dragon Age II? No thanks.

But i think it does. Not in all games ofcause but i see games as a storytelling medium just like books, movies, tv series and comics, and when nudity make sense, i don't think developers should shy away from it. The greatest insult to games in my opinion, is to think of them as toys. Ofcause some games is, just like some movies and books. But just like them, they can also be more than that.

I hope that wasn't too rude but it sounded like you wanted to know why some people felt that way about gore and nudity.

a little bit of nudity isnt bad but some people seemed to want it like you put your clothes off and you are in youre naked **** that would be a problem for me. I am not a person who thinks doing thing things you can do in games is good :P my parent know that and let me play games like oblivion (it can be worse than oblivion, i know children who are 13 years old and play call of duty, bioshock... etc) also my parents know what games i play because my dad plays most of them to :D.

also i was talking about dragon age like gore to (no i dont play that game :P).

you didnt sound rude and thank you for explaining it to me :)

EDIT: to the list:
call of duty
dragon age
grand theft auto

but i dont get why medieval total war? i played total war series when i was 11

What's funny is that I think what most people consider "advlt" themes, I would probably be okay with letting my 10 year old child be "exposed" to in terms of a video game. I played Morrowind when I was 13, for my 14th birthday my dad got me a Playboy and a copy of (the novel) A Clockwork Orange, the film I had already seen at age 10 maybe?

It largely depends on context. I think if you make a game intellectual and complex enough that immature kids will be uninterested in playing it, the ones who stick around will not be affected by content such as sixual themes or violence. Morrowind had a hell of a lot of reading you had to do in order to play, and I think that actually raised the bar for maturity of it's players.

I definitely think Americans have a pretty backwards attitude about maturity, people don't just magically turn into advlts at 18. Our brains are pretty big at 10 years old and we can process quite a bit of new information at that age.

I want some moral ambiguity, and some darker themes. I want to see someone who has striven for something their life, then be brutally murdered when they near achieve it. Sorry I couldn't think of a better example, but generally things that dont seem like they could get worse, but then they do. **** hits the fan several times in a row. I want to see souls broken, and pure terror and fear.

Wasnt sure about that one myself. I guess because it showcases a lot of history and strategy. Because it doesnt glamourise the princesses, courtesans, spies and assassins. Because I could imagine my parents playing it :)

Question. Would Dragon age be more or less mature without the gore?

Could someone post a list of games that they think are mature? (it doesn't matter whether these games are any good :P)
...
Planescape Torment

I agree wholeheartedly. Therre is no other game that I can name with a more mature narrative approach than Torment. I may also nominate Syberia, but some people may call me nuts...or Argonian, whatever.

I definitely wouldn't want to see a 14-year old being forbidden from playing Skyrim because of advlt content.

I'm thinking that the TES series is more about crises and politics along with our exploration and the intrigue that goes along with those things. I could see "swearing" in Tamriel with different words, not the words of our day and culture. Some mild flirting would be great, more to make you smile than anything else in between those dragon battles, nothing explicit. There are other games for that. I expect an M rating because of the violence and that's enough of an advlt rating. Fallout 3 and FNV have more advlt content and at times it was even too much for me (sound effects running around in Gomorrah for an hour in FNV).
