Should the Arena return in Skyrim?

Post » Fri Feb 19, 2010 4:32 am

One of the things i really liked in Oblivion was the Arena and the option to become an combatant. So obviously, i want it to return. Sure the experience might need a little refinement but overall, i loved the Arena. I just wish it had been larger and longer.

And no i don't want multiplayer, just thought it would be reasonable to atleast give people the option.

I think it would be a good idea. Obviously not as 'glorious' as the 'grand arena' in the Imperial City... Something more, second hand, and a bit more... violent :) I also voted for Archery, and Multiplayer. Jousting? I didn't vote for it, but I wouldn't mind it. If it was there I would play it, but im fine without it.

I want to see Mount and Blade's arenas. Team fights, tourneys, fights from horseback, one on one duels. The lot. It would be nice to see some variation in the arena itself as well. As I've said before, a maze setup would make for some awesomely tense stalking scenarios, and no arena is complete without traps.

Didn't really cared much about the arena in Oblivion, but I voted yes because it would fit in Skyrim and there's much room for improvement.

The arena definitely needs to make a return in some form but it desperately needs to be fleshed out. The arena in Oblivion was so bland.
Spoiler
It only deviated a little when you fought that pig and a couple of fights where you fought more than one at a time.
We need more interesting battles where you fight lions, tigers and bears. Perhaps have different leagues for different combat styles where you're limited to using certain kinds of weapons and spells. There could be several different titles you could win, each with their own rewards.

Well this is gonna be the most one-sided poll i have ever made, isn't it.

One of my problems with the Arena in the Imperial City was that it wasn't glorious and epic enough, it was simply too small just like the rest of the city really. It felt more like a small private Arena, the toy of some shady borred rich people who would abduct homeless and force them to fight each other (that might actually make a interesting quest) instead of the cultural hub for thousands upon thousands of fans. So i would definitely like to see a larger and more epic Arena. Not necessary shinning and glorious epic, but epic none or less.

A skyrim arena would be more of a 'fight club' kind of thing. They would have to come up with some way to differentiate it from the Cyrodil version - The more I think about it, the more the movie 'Outlander' makes a good film version for Skyrim. For those who have seen it, there's a scene where they compete after a feast by running around on shields - the Skryim arena should be more than simple combat. It should include events and feats of skill rather than just duels.

Yes. While we're on the topic of epic and glorious arenas - think Gladiator. I want something the size of the Colosseum. I want the crowds to be chanting my name ecstatically. It would be exhilarating, especially after overcoming an encounter that you were nervous about putting your character in.

I suppose there will be one but it would be nice to get something different instead - I won't be bothered if there isn't one. Would be more interested in going to http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Arena:Labyrinthian and having to do a timed run through it or a capture the flag style contest with some companions.

I bought that movie a month ago or something and still haven't seen it.

But yes, that's exactly what i am talking about. The Arena is to Tamriel, what UFC, Boxing, Football (both versions), Hockey and so on is us. We need to feel that.

Yes, however I would like to make one alteration

NOT TO THE DEATH, IT MAKES NO SENSE

I know fights to the death are more hardcoe/epic but as a spectator sport an arena that isn't to the death will have much better fighting. I'll list a few of the many, many reasons here:

  • People can improve, in the IC arena it's just win or die. That means half the people fighting are guaranteed to be novices and not any good
  • Rivalries can develop between 2 good fighters
  • Combatants can develop a following and fans can root for their favorites
  • The arena will attract good fighters from all personality types, rather than just desparate/crazy/bloodthirsty
  • It would give the teams an incentive to actually train the new recruits rather than having to pay for their training and then having the majority die in the first 2-3 fights

Besides, check http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1153456-imperial-city-arena-entertainment-or-genocide/ a couple days ago about how many deaths it requires to have an arena like the one in the IC. For those who don't want to read it, each combatant of the hero rank (and there are at least 6 of them) required at bare minimum 2187 deaths for that one person to reach that rank.

Along with the fights, I'd like to see archery contests (only if PC Skill affects marksmanship rather than only player skill) and the melee (a bunch of people fighting each other in a free for all).

EDIT: I'd like to mention that it should be possible for a fight to end in death, but it should be the exception.

It depends on how they do the combat in skyrim, if it's really well made then i can imagine a very down graded arena where its nothing but a dirty pit with blood smeared all over the floor, but as somebody stated earlier i hope they don't make it too bland, in fact i hope they don't make it a quest line and just have it as something cool to do where you can rank up and reap benefits from it, but with no cheesy story about "getting one up on the yellows" added in.

The whole of Skyrim is an arena with all the Nords and bears running around in the snow! In Skyrim, no-one can hear you scream...over the drunken shouts of brawling Nords, the sounds of a bear tearing into an unwitting tourist and the deep growl of dragons as they increase the rate of global warming by burning villages. :mage:

[EDIT] An arena sounds quite fun. A dirty, run-down pit in the snow. Blood stains the floor and the smell of death lingers in the air. The current champion, wearing naught but a loincloth, holds up the head of his defeated enemy and places it on his belt... yup, sounds fun! :foodndrink:

The arena is simple enough to make and those who don't want it can just ignore it. I think it really enhances the enjoyability of the game.

The Arena just has to be in the game. And, like I said in a previous thread, the devs should get a little inspiration from Mount & Blade here. If you haven't played it, I can in short say that the fights there are much more varied. In addition to normal 1on1 fights, they have team fights, horseback fights, and all sorts of variations of these, e.g. fights where you can only fight with bows, fights where you can only fight with swords, and so on. IMO, there should be fights like these to choose from against random enemies like the marauders or bandits you would encounter in the wild, after you've completed the arena's main story (i.e. become Grand Champion) in stead of Oblivion's "fight three Minotaurs every week-solution".

I hope it returns in some form and I really like the idea of having more then one type of game in the Arena, it would be really nice to mix it up and watch a joust or two lol.

As mentioned before the Arena really needs to be fleshed out more, I loved the Arena because it brought a nice piece of barbarism into the Imperial City, but it needs to be fleshed out more, the characters, the relationships, the rivalries, the one room which seems to house every single fighter <_<

There isn't one -Arena- in Skyrim, there are Multiple *pits* across the entire province where warriors do battle. a kind of FFA if you will, Beth sticks to this tiny little aspect of Skyrim, we'll be mashing skulls in more then one place in Skyrim.

and where the hell are all these people getting these new Emotes from lol.

Wouldn't it be cool to have a centralised, official gladiatorial arena though? And you have to earn your reputation in the pits before you're invited/sponsored in the arena(s)? That would be epic.

They should add different types for each game, like for one on one fights they should have just hand to hand fights and make it one huge slug fest which would give an incentive for people who invest time in to hand to hand, especially if they add new moves and styles for hand to hand.

I think they should look at making hand to hand a more viable combat option by improving its usefulness as a skill before they resort to bribing us into taking it with exclusive quest objectives :P

Yes that would be good to go through the pits, kicking [censored] and chewing bark, ranking up to where you can fight for a name for yourself in the Main Arena(s)

(Oblivion should have had 3 arenas seperate from the IC)

Ya thats why I hope they add new moves and styles, it'd be fun to tackle a guy to the ground and just pummel the guy while trying to keep him down, especially with a crowd watching. :toughninja:
