Should there be "fun" things in Skyrim?

Post » Wed Jan 05, 2011 11:05 am

I was thinking, we all love the exploration and combat (I assume or else we would be here raving about our favorite games) but is there a place for some fun "pointless" aspects to begin to be included. Like I know some of us take time out for a bit of hunting (deer etc), but would it be cool to say be able to ski or I dunno, anything that can take us out of the combat and story and just be a fun time sink of sorts? I think so, but I must have brain freeze cause I can't think of specific ideas, but it's like there's just a black hole of potential that could be filled and add to what is shaping up to be the game of our dreams.

Now, I could see bear taming, or possibly riding a mammoth down a mountain.

Silly you say? Skiing is silly.

Yes its a very silly thing to be in a fantasy RPG like Skyrim. Plus did Skis even exist back in medeval times?

Fatman/Optimus Prime/magicbobbleheads was a very silly thing to have in a morally dark survival RPG like Fallout. :whistling:

Not that I'm agreeing with the "I'd like skiing in Skyrim!", but....

Maybe there should be a polar bear club guild.

LOL Liberty prime. Those bobble heads having magical powers were the only things that was stupid about them, other than that they were just regular collectors items. Those things actually suit the game because they are things that can technically exist in that time, the bobbleheads can get their powers from being exposed to radiation. Liberty prime is just a taller version of a robot, which technically can exist in a future where people can get shot in the head multiple times and live. Skis however are just silly, they would fit better in fallout than in elder scrolls.

These ski races were inspired by famous historic accounts of early medieval skiing in their respective countries. The oldest account involves the famous story from 1206 A.D. of the Birkebeiners during a civil war in medieval Norway. Considered the underdog, the Birkebeiners were at war against a rival faction known as the baglers. Following the death of the Birkebeiner chief, the baglers feared a rival in his young son H?kon H?konsson. To protect him, two of the most skillful Birkebeiner skiers, with toddler in tow, skied through treacherous conditions over the mountains from around Lillehammer to safety in ?sterdalen valley.

(Again, no... I'm not looking for skiing in Skyrim. But it really wouldn't be out of character for "medieval Norse")

Well, the only point of TES games is to have fun, so I can't see any reason to not want features added only to have fun.

I think some fun little medieval/middle age inspired games could be included, like a chess game, dice in the little towns. Perhaps in a later game their could be some horse races, if the horse riding became as slick as RDR.

I don't think you should be able to earn much for these things. Perhaps just a fun reward for beating a couple of guys at chess?

LOL I didn't know that. Then again I don't look up medeval history or even care about it. Skiing still seems to be a silly thing to add to a fantasy RPG like this. After slaying some dragons our hero puts on his skiis and heads down the slopes lol. I can picture that nord in the trailer doing that now.

The only thing older than skiing is sledding and dog sleds. This was also done by the ancient real life Nords. It is no stretch of the imagination that during the idle winter months of Skyrim that bored out of their drunken skulls some blacksmithing/woodworking nord would come up with skis and sleds, etc. How kewl if they had competitions during the winter months for skiing, sledding, dog sledding and, oh yeah, skating! :tes:

:D I want to take people on tours in caves in Skyrim, and then watch them shiver in fear of my stupidity as I perform my loudest Thu’um shaking the walls of the cave with stones dropping from newly formed cracks in the cave ceiling.

Well I doubt that will be possible but I think it would be fun :D

Much easier than hoofing it down!

Plus, the Elder Scrolls severly lack any type of "silly" and are way too serious

Other fun things:
Snowball fights
Ice sculpting
Eating or drinking contest
Lumberjack games
Highland games
Stong Man competition
Sledding
Mammoth pulls

This. Skiing, Snowballs, Skating, sliding, etc. does not fit in a serious RPG like TES.

It IS an RPG, but it is [insert whatever word works for you = realistic, immersive, etc]. I appreciate the need to keep everything circumspect, *NO FUN ALLOWED DRAGONS HAVE RETURNED* signs all around Skyrim, but that's just not the nature of most cultures. Even in the darkest of times continuing to do fun things was like making a statement, "we're not going to let you get us down! You may burn our town, but we'll ski away fast and you won't get us!" hehehe Whether skiing is in or not this thread is asking for ideas of "fun" things and I'm hoping Bethseda has some stuff in store for us! :tes:
