Should thieves break into your house and steal your loot?

Post » Wed Aug 11, 2010 8:20 pm

Let's think this through, shall we? So you have to spend money to keep your items (and therefore, money) from being stolen at random. So aside from basically being forced to lose money either way, it really punishes lower level characters in particular, because they have less money to defend against it.

You must distinguish between features that truly add to the game, and features that punish the player. Having your stuff stolen does not add to the game. It's random punishment for playing.

Did no one read my bank suggestion? :l

Ok, then my objection to a bank is slightly different.

First, immersion. If a bank can keep my stuff safe, why can't I do it myself?

Second, if the bank is the only safe place, what's the point of having a house at all?

You best be trolling. If not, then I don't think you realize how detrimental to gameplay this would be. It completely ruins the entire point of having a house to begin with. Now I don't mean to be an ass, but THIS IS THE WORST [censored] IDEA EVER!!!

I'm for it if it's not thieves who SPECIFICALLY focus on your house, but rather just go around robbing houses with low enough locks that they can get into them. This means that they might randomly pick your house and if they can get in, they can take stuff, but not that they will automatically show up to do so. If NPC's can pick up your sword in the street, they should also be able to break in and pick it up too.

I think it should happen once and that it is a quest to get your stuff back. The reward for completing the quest should be you get your stuff back (Obviously) and your house is given extra security (this could be explained that this particular thief has robbed multiple houses and shops so they reward you by putting advanced locks on your house).

Eh, no. It doesn't make it harder or anything, just make the game more annoying and thus less playable for this "Immersion" thing.
Immersion is good, not when it starts messing with the game.

As an unscripted event that could occur because some NPC's AI told them to steal something on Tuesdays and they happened to be in front of your house at the time, it'd be too annoying since there'd be no way to find out where your items went. I'd rather not have to leave my items in a bank or have guards always hanging around my house. Maybe it could work as a starting point for a radiant story quest though.

I don't really consider 'Thieves-can-rob-your-house' as very immersive

If it creates a "Radiant Story" quest when they do, I'd be in. And I would kill them a lot.

Makes me think of NWN: Hordes of the Underdark.

No one steals the hero's stuff and lives.

Good idea, anyway.

Yes, I would like this option in the game. Maybe there would be a hidden counter for this kind of events so they don't occur too often.

They should be able to break into our house and steal our goods, and we should be able to protect them, by hiring people, putting traps, magical ways, etc... This should be in game, for sure.

imo it would add a lot more to immersion.

Almost all of your thread idea explanations are "immersion." Think past that. Think about, for example, doing some really hard quest that sent you into a dungeon that you spent hours in and you finally got to the end and obtained an awesome sword, then you left the dungeon, went to town, it got pickpocketed and now you just lost hours of your time.

And I know I'm not alone in decorating my house with all of my fancy loot, leaving it out in the open so that it's on display for me when I get home. Coming home and seeing it all gone would make me quit the game and mod that crap out in a second.

It's a nice idea, but so is communism.

I don't want to have to put all of my goods in containers and lock them, or have to lock every entrance to my house every time I leave it, or set traps around my house, or hire guards. I want my house to be my house.

imo it would add a lot more to immersion.

also enable the player to be pickpocketed by other thieves.

Immersion? How would that add to immersing you?

Either way, I would like it, just as long as you could find them and take it back... Otherwise you just lose your stuff...

heck no that wuld completely ruin the entire game if i work really hard to get my legendary items just to have somebody steal it. and the idea kingko came up with is absolutely terrible. im not about to invesigate and follow trails and interrogate people to get clues so i can find my items. thats ridiculous. i keep wut i earned. there shuld be absolutely no stealing.

It should only happen if you don't lock your house :P

No that's silly, I just don't want it in.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... no.

I'd like to keep my hard earned loot thank you very much. It wouldn't add immersion, it'd break my immersion because I'd be so pissed off that I just get up and leave when I find out my awesomely-unique-sword-of-no-retainable-awesomeness was just stolen by a petty thief.

Yeah that would be great, and you should also be able to track those stolen items down, through investigating, interviewing witnesses, looking for dropped items and such that belong to certain ppl, asking around to see if anyone knows anything about a robbery, rule out suspects, etc. maybe you find the items still on the robber, maybe you track the items to traders and frencers or ppl who bought them, maybe the thief got arrested and your loot is sitting in a chest guarded by a jailor and a lock, then you have to steal back your own property. There should also be a system to store away objects more securely like a banking system, or you hire a guard for your house but it cost you so much per day to keep him or her on duty?

Would love to see this in game it would just take me to a whole new lvl of excited.

This would just piss me off and (imo) bring nothing to the immersion. I don't want to have to spend my time worrying about what I left somewhere to be safe.

Although a scripted quest that would make it possible to regain the loot would be OK.

This is a simply terrible concept with no positive sides whatsoever.

You wouldn't know that thieves stole your stuff. They would be there and gone and you'd come back thinking your belongings had just dissappeared. Next thing you know the forums are full of people complaining about an item-erasing "bug", review scores are dropping, everyone is whining about how Bethesda can't make a game that isn't a glitch-fest, etc., all because of this wonderful new feature.

It would be a nightmare for Bethesda, and they know it, so thankfully it won't happen.

Well, considering what I said was pretty much exactly what Todd said when the same issue was brought up in an interview around the time Oblivion was released, I'd say it's pretty certain. He said they threw the idea out because it felt like a glitch. According to Todd, when items vanish from your home or inventory, most players don't think "thieves!" - They think that something is wrong with their game.

And please, try to be more condescending next time. I can always use some amusing statements from people that clearly haven't been following the series for long.
