Shouldn't the Dawnguard be called the Duskguard?

Okay, so the Dawnguard are pledged to rid of vampires in Skyrim. And to prevent a world of darkness (both literally, and metaphorically) in which the vampires would rule

Having said this, Dusk comes before dark, which the Dawnguard are essentially trying to keep from the vampires, meaning they are protecting, consequently guarding it. So if they are keeping the dusk from the vampires and the rest of Skyrim, shouldn't they be called the Duskguard?

Hmm...

Well I guess you could say they are guarding from Dusk til Dawn...

Spoiler
.. I always looked at it like they were watching and warding so that "civ's" would see a the new Dawn... thus they are guarding until Dawn....

Plus the name might have been chosen in a backwards fashion. We know we need a group to counter the vampires... the Head vampire is trying to blot out the sun, so no one will see another dawn... So our people are Guarding to make sure another Dawn rises... Dawnguard. Not saying that is how they came up with the name, but a possible way they could have.

oop's.....sorry

My short answer is no. It shouldn't.

The long answer? Areial hit it on the head for me.

I always looked at it as though the Dawnguard were safeguarding the coming dawn, making sure that the vampires didn't do anything mess it up. Story points aside, this meant focusing on hunting vampires where they hid as well as watching over settlements throughout the night. Also, they have a few unique light spells that facilitate their hunting vampires and undead.

Note that at a certain point during the DG content vampires randomly attack cities and settlements, so as a member of the Dawnguard your job would be to fight them off and protect the civilians. Especially if you didn't want them killing your favorite vendor who happens to conveniently have a shop right-beside the front gate. >.< Pain in the ass.

Your idea about the Duskguard has some merit to it though, I think. That might have been an interesting play, allowing a small group of vampires to join their ranks, helping them keep the local covens under control while safeguarding the future of the world.

Spoiler
What Harkon wanted to do (in theory) was just madness and likely would have been the eventual end of everything, including vampires. Those bloodcursed arrows certainly are a lot of fun though.

Your thinking does indeed have logic to it. I suppose it is a matter of are they guarding as is preserving the dawn or are they guarding in terms of preventing the dusk? I tend to favor that they are guarding to ensure the dawn will always come. Plus I think Dawnguard sounds better than Duskguard.

The question is surely whether they want daylight all the time, or the regular alternation of day and night. The vampires would obviously prefer all night, but the counter-position of all day might be just as bad.

2 points to add, from my view....

1) Protection troops of various militaries are often called Guards, ie Royal Guards, Home Guard, National Guard, etc...

2) Dawn is what the Vampires fear, and is the bane of Vampires.

Taken together you have a military troop who is the the bane of Vampires and thus to be feared by them....Dawn Guard or Dawnguard.

It's called the Dawnguard because their protecting the sun from the Vokihar vampires. The vampires want to destroy the sun with the elder scrolls, so the Dawnguard are literally guarding the dawn.

Ah, but you see, this isn't known until the quest has been started for awhile. I can understand this is why the DLC is called that, unless you say the ORIGINAL Dawnguard knew this, as the Skyrim Dawnguard troop was a resurrection of an old order and name of Vampire fighters.
