Show off your settlement(s)!

Happy to provide some inspiration but be aware that as CurlyGreylox says there is a lot of trial and error and minute adjustments involved in order to get that first block in just the right position so that the rest will go where you want it without clipping. If it doesn't you have to store or move everything until you are back to that first block, move it and try again and keep doing that until you can get pieces where you want them. It wont always work though. What I did each time before deconstructing everything if it is close but not perfect was save first. If when I dismantled it and try again I cant get it any better I would go back to the saved game and just put up with "Good enough".

Also if a particular wall, floor or other item wont fit where you want it to due to clipping, try rotating it or using a similar sized item as they may fit. Especially with the smaller floor pieces I found some locations where none of them woudl fit except one of them but only in a specific orientation.

The concrete blocks are just one of the Shack Foundations for those who hadn't discovered that. Make sure you clear the tunnels of junk as there are a lot materials you will need there.

Other quick tips are for power generators an ideal spot is in the West bastion head all the way to the right until you pass the big room and get to the bottom of the stairs. That little room can easily take 3 small or two medium Gennys and has a convenient hook up point. The Entrance to the Armory is also a good place for them as well either as stand alone power or to link in to the main circuit with pylons and connectors.

Also when in the armory go into Workshop mode. Some of the items in there are not just decoration and can be moved to improve your defenses else where in the settlement, some of the other potentially useful defenses cant be moved though unfortunately

Some great advice there

A few more pics, first one shows what I did when faced with an incline, these fence posts are great - low resource and they can be used for 'supports'.

One more thing I'd say, vary it as much as possible - if your building a large wall for instance, don't use the same panel all the time

How did you do all that within the size limit? I hit the size limit just building a junk wall around the perimeter and a few things within.

Made this video a few days ago:

I've built a bit more on since, like a garage for my power armors. And yes, I modded out the size limit if that wasn't obvious to anyone.

Used the method of dropping items in the build zone, like weapons, then going into construction mode and either scrapping them or storing them. This tricks the bar into lowering and you can build to your hearts content. I've taken the absolute piss so far and haven't suffered any problems other than the odd stutter. I'm really suprised they set the limit so low. The heavier the item the better.

That's quality, love the layout and details. I was gonna do one there but so close to red rocket will prob crash my ps4. Just started in hangmans alley, real small place with tonnes of possibility, I'm thinking shanty town underneath and a steel upper sanctum for the rulers *rubs hands together*

Thanks, man. Yeah, I've pretty much put all my efforts into Sanctuary and haven't really touched the other settlements.

I'm still trying to figure out how to build stuff without it looking [censored]e... half the time parts of walls are off the ground, really is rubbish.

All those 10mm pistols, crappy shotguns and rifles are an absolute essential source of steel and parts. I tend to use miniguns, rocket launchers etc for tricking the bar.

I've been scrapping them at the weapon table. I had no idea I could trick the bar for settlement building, haha.

One other tip I have, when clearing a site of stuff that was already there I store anything and every thing I can instead of scrapping it. If it highlights in green and you can move it then it can be stored. It is much more economical to use a pre-existing item than have to remake it because you scrapped it. If it highlights in yellow then you wont be able to store or move it so scrap it, unless you really want to keep it where it is.

Also if you make walls and floors and other items that you then decide you don't need, store them don't scrap them. You may find them useful elsewhere or that you need them for another building later on.

I often use left over parts to enable me to position another piece where I want it and then store them again leaving the other part where it is. I also use a spare Shack Stairwell to get upper floors at the right height if they wont snap to other items correctly.

Also if you run into space issues and don't want to use the scrap/store glitch keep looking around in Workshop mode for items that can be stored or scrapped. At Red Rocket I found a bunch of no smoking signs that can be stored to give you more space allowance but some of them you have to be in just the right place for them to light up

Only scrap non junk workshop items if you really really really have to.....really ;)

Been working on rebuilding the castle, still plenty of space in the courtyard and perhaps something on top of the walls but the holes in the wall are patched up and fences/defences are up!

Don't feel bad, man. I've tried so much to get good looking buildings, and nothing save for a few select pieces actually want to snap together and look good, and that's if you're lucky enough to find a level building surface. So many of the pieces just don't work well together unless you want to build boring square buildings.

I wish I could toggle snapping because to get anything other than like you say , boring squares, takes forever changing angles and view points. The best way of stopping pieces locking together, I found, is to turn your back to where ever it's happening and work from there, awkward as it is .

You just have to be a bit patient and creative! It can be annoying at times but when it works it feels very good! I tried alot of different ways of parching the Wall at the castle for an example and nothing worked, then i realized i could use the shack foundations and the snapping made them fit in the existant wall. I've learned to like snapping, before i hated it. But now i realize it opens up possibilities to place objects where you couldnt without it.

If you meant you have troubles with the settlement mechanics there are quite a few guides now or maybe ask here
