Just for those who are into lore - who's head will be on the coins in Skyrim?

Probably still Septims due to tradition.

Probably still Septims due to tradition.

I'd agree with that. In all the chaos they would want a strong symbol of unity. Who better then the Septims I'd assume.

The answer is we don't know, I'd imagine it will still be gold coins, but they might do away with the Septim head to reflect the fact that the Empire has collapsed, but who can say? If they did do that, I'd assume that they'd go with something representative of Skyrim, perhaps the face of some Nord king or another, it would have to be someone who had an important role in Skyrim's history, of course.

Provinces may have started issuing out their own currencies since the empire collapsed.

The side that wants Skyrim to stay with what is left of the empire will probably still use septems. However, I could see the separatists melting down what gold they have and making their own gold coins.

I never liked the gold coin only currency in TES games. I would like to see gold, silver, and copper over just gold; it's not really realistic.

Plus one to this. I liked Dragon Age's inplementation of the different coins, and I liked managing your small and large "bills" in Dungeons and Dragons back in the day.

1. The Empire hasn't collapsed, it's collapsing. If it was gone, there'd be no civil war about whether Skyrim should remain a part of it.

2. It's unlikely the rebels will have minted coins as that takes time, stability and infrastructure, none of which are likely to be found during the early stages of a civil war.

So should they be called drakes now instead of septims?

200 years is a reasonable time for new currency to appear.

Honestly I always assumed drakes were just another name for septims. Like how you can call the American dollar a buck or greenback.

I would say Septims, but wasn't there something somewhere which said certain groups were trying to push for their own currency to be used? Or am I thinking of real history?

I always call them drakes - it's just another name for Septims.

Actually...
A.) http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Fourth_Era

B.) http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Third_Empire
The empire ended when Martin Septim sacrificed himself in a successful bid to seal the rift that had been opened to Mehrunes Dagon's Oblivion realm. As the Fourth Era dawned, the Elder Council was unable to prevent the provinces and kingdoms of Tamriel declaring their independence leading to several decades with no central authority: a Second Interregnum.

EDIT: Although, really, I guess it depends on what you consider the empire. The empire as we all know is over, and now it's more of an uneasy, very loosely held together empire. So you're right, Sephiel.

It shouldn't really matter considering how few people outright refer to them as "septims" anyway. The main slang term for them in Morrowind was "drakes", and throughout the series we still have NPCs simply referring to them as gold pieces. Irrespective I do want some NPCs to call them drakes (as I usually do). It'd be so deliciously coincidental considering the dragon-focused plot. :hehe:

I think it's because on one side of the coin is the symbol of the Empire, a Drake, and on the other side is a portrait of Tiber Septim. It'd be like if we referred to American Quarters as Eagles or Washingtons :P

Wouldn't surprise me if they were called Medes, but that'd only get confused with the popular Nord beverage :P

But we don't know many details. Given that it's a civil war, I wouldn't rule out the possibility of two currencies. It happened in Fallout New Vegas, where there were actually many currencies. There were the traditional caps, used among wastelanders, NCR Dollars and Cents to spend with the New California Republic, and Denarii (Silver) and Aurei (Gold) to use with Caesar's Legion. Each Casino had its own currency in chips, but let's not go that far with Skyrim :P So in Skyrim, given that, there could be the traditional drakes and some sort of Nord currency as well. It'd make things interesting at least. But I don't think it matters whether or not that happens. The Septim was so widespread that it'd probably still have monetary value. I can only think that the elves would create their own currencies. Probably whatever they used before joining the empire.

Septims, please. I want no part of smaller coins and having a bunch of different values. It adds nothing to the game.

I doubt they'd call them septims. The Septim line is dead and it's been 200 years with a new Cyrodiilic Empire.
