Show your love with a mixed-tape.

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 1:01 am

I had a significant other once that made me so many mix tapes I wanted to pelt him with them.
He continued to make them after we broke up, unasked for, and even sent one home for me via the husband, what a nutjob. Thankfully, my husband isn't the jealous type.

I suppose a more modern mixtape would be referred to as a playlist.

I think 7 may be my favorite IWHACIYY song. That or 2.

I just made a mix CD for my girlfriend. It was mostly made to show her some bands I hadn't gotten around to showing her previously, but it's the last mix I made. this is just an excerpt from that, I suppose.

I once made a mix tape for a girl I liked. Gave it to her and she laughed at me. Later, she told everyone what I did. They all laughed at me. I felt very small.

I made her another mix tape shortly after. To convey my hatred for her. It contained songs of hate. Such as track 1 Megadeth: Go To Hell. Oh, the last track was also the same track. After that I never made another mix tape but I did and still do let people know that I hate them.

Similar thing happened to me, although I didn't make a second one. Now I wish I would have thought of what you did. :pinch:

Anyway, here is my mix tape.

Mine would just be the Best of Phil Collins.

Nice. That would be like a "Miami Vice" mix tape (and yep I have a playlist named "Miami Vice"). Am I showing my age yet?

Decent cover, but Queen's is the best. Why did you choose the cover version? (other than the fact you like Gregorian Chants, which I do too)

Should I post my picks for a mix tape and show my age further?

I exaggerate slightly. I'm making fun of the new law about to be bought in where if you share files illegally you can have your internet suspended for up to six months and be fined up to$15,000. The concept of 'file sharing' is a little bit fuzzy though. I won't go too far into it, but I wouldn't be surprised if in a few years posting music on a forum is going to be considered illegal file sharing.

Wow - a lot of people with great taste on this forum! :)

Please can we not discuss piracy? It's a restricted topic on this forum

Here's a mix tape (I gave her a CD-R) I made this week for a colleague of mine:

1 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1LLAN29W-4w [Trippy post-rock from LittleBigPlanet theme tune people]
2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvR-reh8NJc [Invective-filled symphonic jazz rock]
3 - Zs - Gentleman Amateur (Leg Lifters mix) [brutal bass-heavy remix, not available on youtube]
4 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-TTPGAy5H_E [My favourite pop single of last year, in spite of dubious lyrics. Reminds me of Bow Wow Wow]
5 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KuXNWaRQn0I [Yet another of these hip Brooklyn experimentalists I listen to these days - this track was on a free sampler from Gigantic records]
6 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2Qlb0qFLFE [Title track from massively acclaimed new album]
7 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NfuXyRFMV4Y [You might find yourself doing a silly dance to this one]
8 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FijRi1OvOrQ [The best thing to come out of Turkey since the doner kebab]
9 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQJHNrsMoFU [Excellent electro from much-hyped new indie stars]
10 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8x2pr-jyXIs [Symphonic electropop described by the Guardian newspaper as sounding like music made under the influence of Brass Eye's made up drug Cake]
11 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBplxVLpnQY&feature=related [The "buke" is a six-string baritone ukulele and the "gass" is a guitar-bass hybrid. Thanks to Socrates200X for getting me into this]
12 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1J1RFKHCx0 [Fine jazzy R&B from Outkast collaborator]
13 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0XXVdHrxCE&feature=related [Not available, but here's something by Fred's other band, Electronicat]
14 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_NIQCBnR84 [Fusion of "world music" and rock by Elysian Fields side project]
15 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGaM1X42Tbc [Another world-music-y thing - bit more traditional sounding, but the woman's voice is absolutely incredible, like Ofra Haza crossed with Liz Fraser]
16 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwo89zTKC9A [My muse, inspiration and pop star crush also does fine cartoon scores]

:D

Making my way through your OP mix. Genghis Tron aren't my thing - not much into the "death metal growl" - but bloody hell are they good!

I'm just realising with horror that some of the members here weren't born when I last saw Autechre play live.

Oh yeah - if you like Nick Cave, you'll like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVgpnUAgsgU song by Foetus, which is about him. Cave and Thirlwell were in a http://foetus.org/content/wp-content/gallery/magazine-clippings/immac2.jpg, and this song just cracks me up every time.

Another recommendation for you, via Lochnarus: the band http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y65RnLkNIMw&feature=related.

I have listened through the whole list now, and it is interesting how a genuine interest in music reflects everything, regardless of music style.

"Death metal growl" is sometimes a necessary evil, to access the really talented musicians. :)

Yeah, love Nick Cave (and Tom Waits. To name another old man). Cool song. I found it hard to hear the lyrics, but will listen again.

I'll look into Virus too.

I understand why. Hendrix was at his best when he sang in this almost offhand way.
