I found Alpha Centauri far more stimulating in these aspects, but those aspects aren't as developed as you would've liked I think. Still, if you haven't tried AC but you do like the (idea of the) Civ games, definitely give it a try.

It's an old game by the way, so don't expect much in the graphical department. It's still really immersive, though.

I enjoy trying to play the games - but I svck at them. I can beat them on the super easy settings, but that's no fun.

I just don't have the talent for setting up where all the workers should be, what to learn from the massive science trees, what enemies to build, where to place cities, etc, etc.

The games are just beyond me. The 360 game was fun, though - it took a lot of that micromanagement out of it and made it a little easier to understand.

I've played the five main titles and both Call to Power spinoffs, and out of the lot I'd say IV is my favorite, with CtP I a close second. Not much of a fan of V, mostly because the AI acts like a spiteful child in diplomacy and an inept idiot in combat (NOTE: haven't played in a while so some of that may have changed).

I never really cared for III, either, as I detested the 'Rampant Corruption' mechanic; it crippled any attempt at building a large civilization, because going over the (absurdly low) city limit meant they all experienced massive 'waste' of food and production. While the theory (curb reckless expansion) was sound, the implementation svcked.

Can I get a shout out for the Final Frontier mod for Civ IV? And the Startrek/ Starwars mods that followed? /intergalactic.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':intergalactic:' />

They are more comprehensible and have more depth than many published games out there. /grad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':grad:' />

I swear the next 4x game that ships had better crap diamonds and piss gasoline if they want me to shell out cash for it when compared to the FF mods..

I got Civ Revolution for the 360. I think I paid $10 for it. I got it because it seems like a must own for 360. None of my friends have it.

Some http://steamcommunity.com/games/SteamWorkshop/announcements/detail/1497692004643017973 today - Civ 5 mods are coming to Steam Workshop!

What are some of your favorite Civ 5 mods you hope to see on the workshop?

So far the only one I've tried is http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=399510, but I highly recommend it. This mod is a massive improvement over the vanilla game and fixes a lot of the balance problems with the A.I.

Looks like fun! I hope there is eventually a version of this for Civ5.

I don't normally like mods in games like this, but when I do I play Fall from Heaven and its sub mod the Erberes one. Those two are fantastic. Civ 4 only folks.

I still fondly remember the original DOS version of Civilization. I think I was playing it on a 386 or 486 at the time... /geek.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':geek:' />

Civ 5 has a lot of problems stemming from the challenges of properly coding the A.I. to handle one unit per tile strategically. As a result, for the most part the devs significantly buffed the A.I. and nerfed the player. They have released a number of patches intended to improve this, but it has still suffered. I do remember shortly after the initial release date it was much worse, however.

The Civilization NiGHTS mod improves a lot of the A.I. behavior and greatly helps to rebalance the game, adding over 80 new cultural policies, revamping the tech tree and completely overhauling diplomacy for the A.I. civs. I'm hoping Steam Workshop will be a shot in the arm for the modding community, resulting in lots of interesting new mods to try.

Hopefully the upcoming expansion improves the AI, that's one of the features listed after all.

I just finished a game last night where the AI was being a bit weird. I only had one city with a strong defensive perimeter around it, going for cultural victory. One of my AI neighbors kept declaring war on me, losing most of his soldiers in a couple of turns, and paying me for a peace treaty... and he kept doing this immediately after the treaty ran out every 10 turns.

That's been a problem since day 1, and one of the things that turned me off from the game. The AIs are a bunch of paranoid psychotics, and act accordingly, with the result that no matter how many times you obliterate their army (which is far too easy to do, even on Deity) they keep coming back for more, even though they know they don't have a chance in hell to win.

Speaking of which, their force assessment algorithm needs serious work, as it is heavily weighted in favor of number of units and almost completely disregards things like tech differential and promotions. As a result, it's all too easy to svcker the AI into a string of Thermopylae-style fights as it thinks it can just zerg-rush you out of existence. Which, oddly enough, would actually work early on if it bothered to stick to its guns; it often has a sizable production advantage, but completely wastes it by faffing around in your outer defenses while you pot-shot it to death instead of just sending the whole force in at once and winning through sheer force.

Come to think of it, that might be just as well despite how stupid it is, or some Deity-level games would be over by turn 6...

I've never played the Civ series. Which version you guys recommend?

On another note, I hear people say about the great Alpha Centauri but how come Sid hasn't made a new version since the last one?

Of the actual Civ games I'd recommend Civ IV; mechanics are well-designed and balanced, and it avoids some of the annoyance pitfalls that have plagued some of the other Civ games (e.g. the poor AI of Civ5, pollution and corruption implementation in Civ3, etc). It's also got some great mods for it (once you've played the base game a bit I highly recommend checking out the Fall From Heaven 2 mod). Alpha Centauri, while not technically part of the Civ series, is the other game I'd highly recommend along with Civ4. Tremendous amount of freedom in play styles between social engineering, which techs and secret projects to rush, terraforming options, and the ability to design your own units. Plus you can pick it up for just $6 on http://www.gog.com/gamecard/sid_meiers_alpha_centauri.

As for why Alpha Centauri hasn't been followed up with a sequel, I think it has to do with complications over who holds the rights to the game, seeing as Firaxis is currently publishing through 2K, while the rights to Alpha Centauri are currently held by EA.

Ah, I knew there was something behind it all. Anyways, I might get Civ IV since after searching the net it appears that people are very fond of Civ IV in comparison to the other installments.

I've only done Civilization : Revolution

I enjoyed it but I think its more a beginners game compared to the other sequals.

Also Civ 5 - I dislike hexagon maps. I know its a petty reason.

Civ IV is a phenomenal game, the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5e0Qelqp-Cc&feature=share&list=PL148A567BB5EB0821 is amazing and so many aspects of the game are very well designed.

Although it has not been well implemented in the vanilla game for the A.I. Civs, I do think Civ 5's one-unit-per-tile is a tremendous improvement over Civ 4. It makes combat a lot more strategic instead of simply, say, building a massive stack of modern armor units to wipe enemies off the map.

Another thing that is great about Civ 5 is a lot of people on Steam have it and it's rather easy to set up matches with your friends on Steam. Personally, I have a lot of fun with super long campaigns with huge map in Civ 5 singleplayer and quick paced matches with tiny map for the multiplayer The Civ 5 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRLTcmhhA74&feature=share&list=PL179E61153F05FEA8is also really good, not quite as epic as the Civ IV soundtrack, but there is a completely different soundtrack depending on which leader/civilization you choose to play, so overall there is a lot more music with greater variety:
