I remember a pretty good Cold War mod, although it might have been for Civ 4.

I love these games, Civ 3 being my personal preference. How awesome was it to go into city view and look at all the buildings?
I liked Civ: Call to Power as well, with it's space and marine colonies.

I have the original Civilization, Civilization II, Civilization IV and Civilization Revolution for the Nintendo DS.

Don't have V, and I'm not sure if I ever will get it either, IV is enough for me /tongue.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />

I stopped playing Civ V about six months ago and now I started playing it again. One night I played 7 hours straight...

Only played Civ V once, and haven't really felt the need to get back to it. I've played Civ IV and Alpha Centauri several times since then, however. /tongue.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />

Can't recommend any mods for Civ V, but for Civ IV (specifically its Beyond the Sword expansion) I always play with Varietas Delectat, which adds new unique units to each nation that greatly enhance the flavor of each, and Fall From Heaven 2 (or its various spin-off submods) which is a total conversion into a "Master of Magic" style fantasy setting.

I love Civ, but wasn't crazy about V. IV was a better game in my opinion.

My favourite is still Civ 2 though.

So my first Civ game was Civilization Revolution on the Xbox 360 and I really enjoyed it. So I bought Civ V the other week when it was on sale through Amazon, and I'm not sure if I'm playing right.

I mean it's soooo slow. I've probably put 6 hours in and have only just now conquered Russia. Most turns nothing happens. I'm at turn 170 and not much has happened yet. It takes so long to move troops across my territory. I have all kinds of roads but they don't seem to do anything. Also it's hard to move troops around tight territory (with mountains and stuff). Takes forever to try to get my people through.

I have about 9 cities and it's a pain to manage the production in them all. At this point I don't even care and just have them all making archers.

Is this how the game is supposed to be? If there are 8 countries, I think it would take over 1,000 turns to conquer them all...If I even play that long.

As a fan of Civ, I really disliked Civ V, as you already know it's wayy too slow, Civ III is alot more akin to my interests in Civ, you could try playing that, much quicker than Civ V

I play Alpha Centauri which is basically the same sort of game, and that sounds about right. One time there were 200 turns before I even saw any other nations.

Civ V can take a lot of time to complete. I usually just concentrate on my economy and get some money. After that, I buy a lot of units and attack.
Btw roads can be very useful when moving your units. They speed things up a lot, especially during warfare.

I completed a medium all around game in about 6-8 hours in two sessions recently, completed science victory in 1964 took about 400 turns. Of course it was quite quick as I only had 3 cities so I wasn't bogged down in city management all that much.

Have you built city upgrades? I find them very important. Also upgrade tiles around your cities to gain the resources on the tile.
Don't build your cities too close to each other or they'll compete over tiles to work.
Don't over extend yourself either, Civ V is far more accommodating towards small empires than previous games, so much that I completely dominated a civ with more cities than me with the previously mentioned three. One big city is better than two small ones. Heck there is even an achievement to win a game with only one city.

Yes, sounds exactly like my time playing Civ V. Slow, awkward, surprisingly bad performance, and the AI was a joke... Still play Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword instead. There's more to do, better automation of redundant tasks, and most importantly you can have more than one unit per tile (I mean, did they really think that was going to work for proper armies? The scale is totally wrong.)

I stick with Civ IV(Now and then I'll dig out 2) and Alpha Centauri for my Sid Meier's strategy fix.

I started with civilization 1 lol. Skipped 2 and 4 tho for whatever reason. Age of empires and mythology probably the culprits there. I also own Civ revolution. What a POS that game was. Sorry if you liked it but the pace was just too fast for me. It made it have no replay value for me. 2 hour civ games? No thanks.

Maybe true civ games are not what the OP likes? They are all pretty slow. Revolutions was a console civ game and is quite a bit different from the PC versions.

As for civ 5? Well I like a lot of things in it and dislike a few of them too. Only have about 100 hours in with only the Greeks and Aztec civs having been used. The key to civ 5 is making money and being the ally of ALL the city states. Then aqcuiring large amounts of luxury resources because conquering people can be a real pain in the ass if you want to retain their cities! Happiness is key. Unhappiness almost completely stifles your civs productivity if it gets rampant.

I am playing a domination game on Epic mode with an Emperor difficulty setting. You wanna talk about slow? If you lose a military unit on epic mode it hurts!! Epic mode increases production and research etc etc time by quite a bit and extends the amount of turns in the game. It was effing difficult at first but at the end I was making 2500+ gold a turn, had like 100 cities about 60 of which I founded and 24 allied city states with a military unit for every city plus about a dozen extra. Only two fledgling empires were left out of the max number you can select, 12? Both of which just managed to reach the industrial age as I just completed my first future tech and my first Giant Death Robot. Patience, planning and perserverence are the key in this game. 3 P's, remember em! These games are usually slow. Just how it goes however I believe their are three pacing settings. Epic being the slowest and then regular and an acclearated production, cultural expansion and research etc etc setting as the fastest.

Thing so far that have been bothering me. A few of them are questions. Can we cap the age range for civ 5? Like if I wanted the tech tree to stop at the end of the medieval age or classical age for example? I don't see te set up anywhere...

Are the DLCs worth it? I kind of want the other campaigns. Mods look interesting but gonna wait a bit before touching any.

What is with the performance of the game? It takes me like 2+ minutes at loading screens for some reason! Granted that was nearing the end of that epic future ere game I played on emperor, might have been king, difficulty. Think I may need to set the graphics down a tad but my PC should be able to handle it just fine.

Don't like that i cannot stack units. Gets annoying trying to make a trade route to a city state on an Isthmus that has a permanently sentried unit blocking the path no matter what i do short of war.

Was expecting more units. I like the uniques though. Kind if irritates me that archers upgrade to infantry and lose the barrage ability. The should upgrade to grenadiers and then mortars in the later eras so they can still be cheap somewhat effective siege units that can do severe damage without taking damage against approaching units.

I don't like that embarked units are completely defenseless. An ancient era barbarian trireme should not be able to take out a ship full of men armed with guns...

Oddly my biggest pet peeve, thats harking back to the original civilization, is not having the old view city option. I truly like to see ALL my wonders in ALL their glory in MY cities. But understandably that would take quite a lot of extra work to accomplish. Still want it though. Wish they will bring it back...

I do like a lot of what they have done though too. I still feel like it is a great game and obviously my complaints are rather minimalistic. Need to play it more to tell. This is a series that must be measured in the hundreds of hours of gameplay range.

Damn mods merging threads...almost lost that wall of text lol.

To add what EvilFish1 said I don't like Civ 3, but I do like the ancient Egyptians in the prehistoric time era there is in Civ 3.

You can play the game at an extremely slow pace (Marathon, Huge World, Lots of Civs) or a very fast pace (Quick, Tiny Map, Very Few Civs, No City-States), or anywhere in between depending on your preference.

For the PVP ladder games I've joined, usually people tend to go with Quick, Tiny Map and there is also a setting to disable all the battle animations, etc. in between turns. For single player I prefer Marathon pace and Huge random map.

It can a month to finish a very slow single player game if I only play a few turns here and there. I've played PvP matches that are over in an hour or two (usually with me on the losing side).

I'm playing an online game of Civ 4 with someone -as a team, and was wondering whether we can swap or temporarily give cities to each other, build the nation specific building in the city and then give it back, gifting the special building to my team member as it were.

It's because I'm playing the Dutch nation -natch /cool.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' /> and they receive the Dike city improvement which like the Levee improvement adds a +1 production hammer to all river tiles, but it also adds a +1 production hammer to all water tiles as well, whether they be lake, coastal or deep ocean it doesn't matter. And my team mate has a number of coastal cities that would benefit from the added production in our mortal struggle against Montezuma -who for some reason best left to the quirks of gaming AI, has it in for my team mate..

I just got Civ 5 last night, really liking it. I used to play Civ 2 way back in the day on my aunt's old computer.

Actually wondering if anyone can recommend some must have mods, is the unofficial patch any good?

Is anyone else here excited about the upcoming expansion for Civ V, Gods & Kings? It adds some old features from Civ IV to the game, including religion and espionage.
Also, nine new civs. And it's coming out next month.

The only one that I've played was Civilization II Test Of Time. My favorite computer game when I was growing up.

I love all the Civ games equally as the different game rules in each give completely different options for playing the game.

So, I was at a friends house the other day and played Civ IV for the first time. I loved it, but felt like it lacked overall depth in the system. Other than choosing a religion (or lack thereof), you couldn't really manage your culture. Sure, you can decide whether to be warlike or mercantile, but beyond that you're a pretty dull people. I feel like it should have included more hands-on management of the cities. You should be able to actually lay out your laws, decide what crime means what punishment, control propaganda, choose how it is managed. Another thing, although minor, was the lack of ability to choose the aesthetics of your people.

Anyways, I'm curious if there are any games that go into greater detail with this sort of thing but share the same overall mechanics.

EDIT: Bleh, title is wrong.
