[RELz] Signy Signposts(!) TR Map 1

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 4:39 pm

Can't wait for the finished result! Keep it up, Earth Wyrm! :)

For the signs, I think both have good points. (Like Gez, I slightly prefer the first one's layout) But the second comes out on top, I think.

The first reason I prefer the
  MoonmothLegion Fort

layout to the
Moonmoth Legion Fort

layout is that, to use linguist jargon, "moonmoth" is one semantic unit and "legion fort" is another. It's not the fort of the Moonmoth Legion, it's the Legion Fort called Moonmoth. So I prefer the cut to be between Moonmoth and Legion rather than between Legion and Fort.

The second is that Moonmoth is closer in length to Legion Fort than Moonmoth Legion is to Fort.

That said, do as you wish. :)

Good point, but what about just doing
Moonmoth Legion Fort
in smaller letters?

I've got to agree with Dirges here, any smaller would be a no go. These need to be readable from a distance, that's very important to me. Thanks for the input though StarwarsGuy. :)

Hrmmm... I'll give some thought to the alternative layout; Gez certainly makes a good case for it, and it isn't really that much trouble to redo the text. Once I've got a side by side comparison of one layout compared to the other, with the same texture quality, it'll be easier to make a balanced decision.

Actually, you could also interpret 'Moonmoth Legion' as a premodifier to 'Fort'. Together the two constituents would be a noun phrase with 'fort' as its 'noun phrase head'. In the sentence 'I went to the Moonmoth Legion Fort' you could leave out both 'Moonmoth' and 'Legion', and people would still likely know what you were referring to.

In order for 'legion fort' to be one unit it has to be interpreted it as a compound noun. :grad: :-)

If you want to play this game, "fort" is the head of "legion fort" and in turn "legion fort" is the head of "Moonmoth legion fort". :P

LOL - yes, you're right. :)

Gosh, I think I'm going to pick up that syntax book again! I always enjoyed drawing sentence tree structures.

Agh! Everybody stop!! Earth Wyrm is the ultimate perfectionist - if we keep saying we'd like the font to be rotated 10 degrees, or engraved onto oak instead of pine, he will not stop until he has satisfied you! Cant we all just agree this is the best sign replacer out there, probably ever will be for morrowind, and let him release it? Please :)

Two weeks later, I'm still ploddin' along. Trying to work out a good way to do swampy variants; I'd say that the technique is half complete but still needs a lot of work. Not ready for screenies yet. :)
Thanks for the feedback, I haven't replied up to now not for a lack of interest or appreciation, but for a lack of knowing what to comment about. I'll try both layouts and see what I prefer and what allows for better readability.. :)

These looks great. I will definately go for them when they are ready. All the others look wrong in some way. Either to modern with weird fonts or colors or to "machine made". It's like this they should look of they would have been there. *standing ovation for the wyrm* :)

But to the above discussion about how to write Moonmoth legion fort.. I'm swedish so I have no idea at all what you guys are talking about but for me it's like this.. I know what Moonmoth legion is. That is a specific legion going under the name of Moonmoth. I know what a fort is. But I have never heard of a legion fort before. Probably becasue a legion could mean a bunch of different things in different places so a legion fort really doesn't say anything. So I can't for my life understand why you would separate them like you both said..

Yeah, see, that's where you're wrong. ;)

It's a fort of the Imperial Legion (thus, a Legion Fort -- just like a fort belonging to House Hlaalu would be a Hlaalu Fort), and this fort is named Moonmoth (this is the name of the fort, not the name of the legion!). So, Moonmoth Legion Fort; as I explained above: the Fort named Moonmoth belonging to the Legion.

Wahah. Experimenting with creating mould without extensive use of photographic source is fun. :D

So I'm basically working on a set of Photoshop macros to generate mould from a handful of blobs put down by the pencil tool. I can't say, at this point, whether or not they'll turn out good enough to be useful, but if they do turn out to be half-decent, would it be worthwhile releasing them for public use? Would people be interested in such a thing? It's a fairly unconventional resource.

I'd most certainly be interested! Every texture can do with a few blobs of mould here and there, and blending in real fungi or lichen is not always the best option. :-)

Glad you're interested, Mr. Swiveller - gives me some incentive to make sure that they're reasonably generic action sets and can be used in any .psd without a problem (rather than just making them to work on my signs only).

I've got a couple done which look half decent, but not 'whole' decent.
Here's a shot of two of them.

Hey that looks great! Maybe you should put some ash stains and make the sign look battered from the constant storms, that would be great.

If you already implemented that, which looks like you might've by all that black, I feel silly from suggesting it :P.

I have, but that's on a different sign. ;)

Thanks Melchior. I'm not sure about the artist part, but I've done my best with the constant help of the undo key. :)
