Sim City

Post » Sat May 17, 2014 4:42 pm

So now that the launch from hell is over I was looking at the game again. I saw they just made it so it can be played offline, something I'm glad about. City size still looks small though. Wondering what some of you who play the game feel about it and if its worth the time/money?

thanks

I got it for Christmas. Didn't install it. Watched for the off-line mode fix, which finally arrived.

I might try it out, but in between I reinstalled SC4Deluxe, and I suspect not having to deal with Origins and the many problems that are apparently still plaguing the new one will keep me in SC4 for another year or so. Another 'give the modders time to fix it' special.

Go buy SimCity 4. A better game in every possible way. 'SimCity' will forever be stunted by their attempt to force always-online. City size is too small, all your cities end up being the same as result of the limits forced on you, and they still havent properly fixed the AI and pathfinding.

Even with offline available, there is no reason to buy SimCity. Go buy SimCity 4 or the latest Tropico, they're much better.

Tropico 4 was more fun anyways. Labor Camps were the way to get [censored] done., and still be able to have a capitalist nation on top of that was amazing. Effective use of Politics and city planning. I think in one playthrough, my chief exports were Rum and Cigars, and were very profitable.

As long as we're spreading the wealth out to Tropico, let me throw in a good word for Grand Ages Rome/Imperium Romanum. I picked them up in a combo pack off the discount rack a while back and they were fun.

Yeah, same. Played SC2000 lots back in the day, so annoyed that my floppy with my huge awesome metropolis save been missing for almost 2 decades  Guess I accidently trashed it or something.

Heh, that's what I did actually. After reading about that whole mess I stumbled upon a copy of SimCity 4 Deluxe cheap and bought it, but after a year it's still wrapped into plastic, oh well

The small city size's can work to an advantage if you play it right. What I have heard of people doing is making a city that is a trash dump/recycler and a city that is a power generator, you could probably even do this with Heavy Industry. I don't know what the commuting is like between cities in the new game, but you can pretty much ignore the sims in those two or three support towns. This will let the other cities be clean and of higher value. I did this in SC4 with the connected city aspect, but I don't think it was as fleshed out as it is in the new game.

Actually from what I've read it doesn't work very well in the new game...too many 'commuter' things are broken (university I've seen mentioned a lot...it's frakkin huge and obviously intended to be a regional thing, but hey they forgot to put in any crossing the borders support so it only has one city worth of students and suffers constant underutilization).

I played SC2000 so much that it stopped working.

Is it me, or is Sim City 5 a lot easier to manage than before? I used to always bankrupt before I get a full city up.

If you are a fan of Sim City I would say it is worth the money. I bought it a few months ago and got about 30 hours in before I got tired of it.

It is different than the other games, but I don't necessarily think that is a bad thing. Sure the city size is a lot smaller, but as CCNA mentioned, it is more about making a region than about making one city. As long as you keep that in mind, I think the game is very enjoyable.

I actually like SimCity, though the small plot sizes are a nuisance.

Overall SC3K is still my favourite, but SimCity (5) is a solid second for me.

Actually found that game at a Goodwill last year. Might have been 3000, though. I just remember being sad that I couldn't buy it due to not having a floppy disk drive. It was nearly complete in the box, too. I find the ultra complex ways of Simcity 4 a bit much and would love to just play the older ones. I heard 3000 was the best one, too. There's CD versions of the game, luckily. Might look into it.

SC3000(Unlimited) came also as a CD-ROM. So look for that instead.

Back on track for a moment, got about three hours in and enjoyed it for the most part. I think limits on city size will be my biggest disappointment. I'll try and think regionally, and pretend its a different neighborhood.
