Simple Essentials Question...

Post » Thu Dec 16, 2010 9:06 am

I don't feel comfortable uploading it to any of the major file servers--that honor is for Skycaptain--but if anyone would like to test Simple Essentials before the discussion thread is re-opened, I can provide a (temporary) link to the lastest beta via pm. Note, however, that I will take it down as soon as the mod is back in development.

That sounds good to me. :)

If you want you can save yourself some trouble and just post the link in this thread, I don?t mind.

That's probably best, as due to my lousy work schedule I'm not always online when most folks are. ;)

Simple essential is the mod that made me use those taverns and inns in the game. Now you actually have to plan before going on huge expeditions :D

It's like "Medic!" of yours, a nifty little mod that saved the butt of those unessential characters and that made use of those millions of potions I had.

Thanks 'Captain :-)

Thanks for the trouble man, it?s nice that people can play with it during the weekend if they want to. :)

Some quick documentation to help with the mod

-positive effects can be seen in your active effects list, so they can been easily checked out

-negative effects, caused by "lack of positive effects", are direct drains on health, magica and fatigue. Your bars simply wont go above certain point.

-the mod wont kill you, at any point, or render you unable to move due to 0 fatigue etc. It?s also perfectly safe to disable the mod at any point, the drains are scripted with Obse and can be replenished after disabling the mod normally.

-all food works, that is tagged as food in CS. So mod added food works. "Real" drinks are better than water (that can be gotten from wells and lakes etc, by filling an empty bottle), to give taverns and drinks a point. You can mix water and vine to make "alcohol safe" "real" drinks, incase you use an inebriation mod.

About controls, they are simple, but I haven?t been playing in a long time. Could someone post instructions on how to eat, drink, fill bottles etc? :)

I'll do the best I can to write down the basic instructions, but feel free to add whatever I miss...

There really isn't a lot to using the mod--simplicity itself, just like the title says. And ease of use is one of its most endearing features.

EATING: No more dinner plate. Just click on the food you want to eat, and it will be consumed. If you accidentally click on something that isn't edible, the mod will tell you so. So no belly-aches from eating silver nuggets either. You'll usually get more than a fair warning before any penalty is applied--you'll start out 'getting hungry' (no worries), and then go to 'I'm hungry' (...okay...), and after that 'very hungry' (yeah). These stages take some time, so there's no real hurry to gulp something right down--and if you just don't have a chance to take time out for a meal, you're not going to die. You will feel it, though. A good breakfast will fix you right up.DRINKING: Pretty much works the same way. Three warnings. In my experience using this with OOO, you'll get rid of your thirst and get drunk at the same time, if you slug down something alcoholic. I don't recall if you can purchase empty water bottles ingame, it seems to me that you can... somewhere. But I never do. That's where all those low-level potions that I never use come in handy. Just sidle up next to a well, lake, or river, open your inventory, and press 'E' while you hover your mouse over one of those useless bottles. The potion will be dumped out, and exchanged for a bottle of water. :D But... there are two kinds of water--clean (from wells) and unclean (all those creatures standing upstream in lakes and rivers, you know). And while unclean water can be used in a pinch and does fix your thirst, you can get sick from drinking it. That's where wine comes in. Research has proven that a leetle bit o' the graqe added to unclean water destroys germs ... or at least makes them happy enough not to mess with you. So even cheap wine can be your friend--just use a wine bottle instead of a potion bottle, and you're good to go. BTW, you'll do yourself a big favor if you carry a good supply of clean bottled water when you go to Elsweyr ... water is scarce in the desert!SLEEPING: Same three warnings apply to sleeping ... a long dungeon takes you down a few attribute points, inconvenient but not fatal. And there's no sleep deficit involved.

That's pretty much it. I use this mod with full FCOM and with See You Sleep, and it works just fine with both.

I agree wholeheartedly. I've tried all the alternatives (including playing without any realism mods at all), and I always come back to Simple Essentials--it does everything I want, without being annoying. I'd recommend it to anyone playing this game ... except it's not available any more. (Another mod I'd like to see restored/improved is Shad's Water Bucket Plus, which was developed as a companion mod for Simple Essentials ... it provided refillable waterskins ... but sadly, that has disappeared too.)

If anyone is interested in any of my mods I can make them publicly available again.

Hey, man, that would be great! Yours is one of my 'can't play without' mods ... finding flasks of water on dead npc's is better than gold ... plus Item Interchange is set up to use Shad's Coffee so I can actually (sometimes) buy fresh water from merchants in Elsweyr.. by the time I get to Orcrest, I've usually run out. I'm sure others (not just SE users) will appreciate your mods as well ... it's just hard recommending them if they're not available anymore.

That does sound nice! I could use some water skin type things.

I'd be much obliged if you reuploaded that mod!

A little info on the waterskins (Shad's Water Bucket Plus): Each waterskin gives you ten drinks of water; and they can only be refilled at wells, so in terms of Simple Essentials, it is always clean. But they are not a full replacement for carrying bottles/bottled water, as in some places wells can be a long way apart. In addition, Shad's Water Bucket Plus also adds beverages like tea, milk, coffee, and orange juice, which offer some temporary potion-like stat benefits as well as fulfilling the thirst requirement ... with Item Interchange, these drinks can be bought from most any inn. The waterskins themselves are a little harder to find, because II does not (yet) include them. But if the mod becomes available again, I don't think there will be too much problem convincing Vacuity to add it to a future release of II... on the other hand, I rather like them being on the rare side, as finding a merchant who sells them is a goal to be achieved.

I will put it back up, don?t worry. And wow, I?m so happy to hear people are still using it, or even talking about it - I mean it must have been unavailable for a year? :)

The version that was up was a beta, and while it seems it could have been 1.0 just as well, there was this mixup which distracted me from the mod for a moment, then I got caught up with making DR6 and seriously I haven?t played the game or touched Simple Essentials since. :P

DR6 is soon ready, so I can make a new beta release, and see if anyone wants to report any minor bugs, makes more sense when I get my own game running and play with Simple Essentials myself, then I can test any reported problems, if there are any. :)

Just a note to Skycaptain...I know you are still busy with DR but I hope you do re-release this on TESNexus, I've been using it for nearly a year now and it always functions as intended, works with food items from every mod I've used that adds food and the rates seem perfect, if I wait for a message that Im hungry or thirsty it seems to take about 4 drinks and 4 units of food to satisfy and this seems about right to me.
This is simply the best needs mod available (an excellent script) I really think you could release it as 1.0 as I've not found any errors, if you do you should mention Shads Water Bucket as the two work flawlessly together and compliment each other very nicely, I think a lot of players would switch to SE if they were aware of it, it just works better than most of the popular needs mods being used.

I?ll do this, I just need to write a proper readme and so on, in other words put a few hours into it without feeling guilty for not modding DR. :P

I?ll be sure to mention your mod, it goes so well with Simple Essentials. :foodndrink:

Well I know what my next 2 mods will be :) I've been going more for realism -- downloaded the movable bedroll mod so my ranger/druidish girlie can sleep out in the woods. This will be even better. Cheers for their resurrection! :foodndrink:

I don't mean to sound completely retarded but the filling of wine bottles with water doesn't seem to be working for me, tried next to a well..no joy, tried in a little lake..no joy, anyone fancy schooling me?

I haven't been successful either. Stood next to wells in the Elven Gardens, outside Weye, behind the lone farmhouse near Weynon Priory, in front of Weynon Priory (I think), in Chorrol. Also while standing in water, and swimming in water.

Highlighted ale bottles, beer bottles, self-brewed potions, found potions, wine bottles. Hit E and every other key on the board. Started the Enhance Economy settings script by accident, but no water.

Downloaded the Water bucket mod mentioned in the thread last night, going to try that today.

Wondering if there is a pre-requisite like Let the People Drink, or a cobl well feature that I should have installed? Anything to check for. No conflicts that I can see in TES4View.

Haven't seen any empty water bottles either.

Does this mod check for meshes at all, because I am using a replacement mesh mod for potions.

If you just have a bottle of wine and no empty waterbottles you'll get nowhere, after all the wine bottle is full of wine. First you have to create some waterbottles.

You create a waterbottle by targeting, say a well, then going into menu. Hover your mouse over an unimportant potion or poison and click the 'jump' key ,default E. The potion becomes a full bottle of water (clean or dirty depending on the source). You can make multiple full watrerbottles in one go.

Drinking the water from the waterbottle (click on it while in the menu) creates an empty waterbottle.

Full waterbottles are in with your wine, ingredients, potions etc submenu. Empty watrbottles are in the misc. sub menu.

You can refill empty waterbottles (hover over one and click E while looking at a water source).

To make watered wine you need a bottle of wine and an empty waterbottle. Target a well (or stand in water), hover your mouse over the wine and click. You lose the wine and the empty waterbottle but gain two bottles of watered wine. You retain the waterbottles once the watered wine is drunk.

This all sounds confusing, but it isn't really. For example, say you have 2 bottles of cheap wine and 2 restore fatigue potions.
1. Go into your inventory while targeting a well.
2. Hover over the stack of 2 restore fatigue potions and click E twice.
3. You now have two bottles of water. Click on them to drink them (still in your inventory). You now have 2 empty water bottles.
4. Now hover over your stack of cheap wine and click E twice. You now have 4 bottles of watered wine.
5. If you want to drink them all immediately you can do, and refill the empty bottles with water from the well.

You've done the whole of this without leaving your inventory.

It took me ages to realise that watered wine could be made out of any in game wine, not just cheap wine.

Hope this helps.

The F'n jump key.

Nobody ever mentioned the jump key. My jump key is remapped onto a USB keypad. Those are pretty much the only buttons I never tried.

Well, blow me down.
