A simple few questions

Post » Sun Oct 24, 2010 5:27 am

I was very dissapointed when I learned I could not edit the environment and stuff on the Xbox 360. Is there no way that I can do it on the Xbox, like downloading stuff or buying expansions?

And is the construction set very good in Oblivion for the PC? What exactly can you do? Can you create buildings, items and people? If you create to much does it lag? Can you edit the actual ground? Just wondering.

-Thanks

You can download the official expansions, but you cannot legally modify them or the game for XBox 360 or PS3. Even if you could, both consoles lack the ability to handle some of the mods that are out there.

And is the construction set very good in Oblivion for the PC?

In a word: Yes. :)

Can you create buildings, items and people?

Create as is make something that has not been seen in the game? No. You can add existing building types into the game, modify the stats for items, make lots of new NPCs (some mods add over 1,000) and make your own dungeons out of the available tilesets. You can make quests, set up battles, make your own house/castle/fortress/hideout. There is a lot you can do with the CS.

If you create too much does it lag?

It depends on what you do and how good your PC is. If you put a lot of light sources in one area, the game will tend to lag a bit. You generally can't have more than 16 NPCs and/or creatures in combat at once (unless you modify the Gameplay setting that controls that, but doing so can lead to problems).

Can you edit the actual ground?

Yes. You can alter the terrain height, change the ground texture, do all sorts of things. You can even create your own world space. To get an idea of what's possible, check out some of the mods on http://tesnexus.com/.

First of all thanks for the info it was very helpful, and oh my god that's awesome! And what exactly is a world space? And is there a way that I could import mods I created on my PC to my Xbox? I'm guessing not, but just a hope. But it is possible to share your created things with other PCs, right? Also, does the construction system take a while to get the hang of? And are the controls really weird for the PC? Like are movements fluent? Because the reason I originally got it for the 360 was because I figured movement and combat would be so much easier.

I'm not sure if this definition is 100% correct, as I'm a novice to modding myself, but the worldspace is the basically just the world the game is taking place in. Vanilla (unmodded) Oblivion takes place in the Tamriel worldspace, where as the Shivering Isles expansion takes place in the Shivering Isles worldspace. Unfortunately, there is no way to put your mods onto an Xbox 360, but you can share them with other computers. The construction set, as well as Oblivion itself (moving from a gamepad to a keyboard isn't easy for everyone), does take some getting used to, but there are some tutorials to help get you started over at the http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/Main_Page Happy modding! :)

Martin T is correct in his definition of a World Space: It is the space in which the game takes place. Every exterior you go through is part of a world space.

And is there a way that I could import mods I created on my PC to my Xbox? I'm guessing not, but just a hope.

No there isn't and even asking about it can get you in trouble.

But it is possible to share your created things with other PCs, right?

Yes it is. However, the CS uses the resources from the game itself. The game actually has to be installed on your PC in order for you to use the CS to mod it.

Also, does the construction system take a while to get the hang of?

If you follow the tutorials on the http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/Main_Page, you'll get the basics down pretty quick. http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/Category:Getting_Started Them try http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/A_beginner%27s_guide%2C_lesson_1_-_The_Construction_Set_Primer and go from there. You might also want to try the modding courses available at http://www.tesalliance.org/ I've been modding for a year and a half now and I'm still learning stuff.

And are the controls really weird for the PC? Like are movements fluent?

Once you get used to them, the controls are quite fluid. I originally had Oblivion on the PS3. Now I can't even play the PS3 version because I'm so used to the PC controls (and I prefer them anyway).

To be clear on this - you can create what you want in other programs - like 3dsmax photoshop etc - then import it to the cs. Actually there are very few things that can't be/haven't been done in Oblivion - I mean very few.

Also, does the construction system take a while to get the hang of?

Yes it does - follow the links given to you by the Vyper - if you do your reading properly you will avoid a lot of frustration. That being said there is enough info around nowadays - unlike when the whole thing began.
Also managing mods can be a hassle - when one has a couple of hundreds, which you will have in no time - believe me. Read before (and while) installing oblivion : http://sites.google.com/site/oblivionpoinfo/walkthroughs/baininstallguide
There are some utilities you need to download and get used to, wrye bash being the #1
Happy burning out :D
