Simple V.A.N.S. Question

How do I ~use~ VANS?

I feel kind of silly asking, but I am at the point I can throw around perk points freely, now (have everything I ~want~ already).... and I thought about trying out VANS but wasn't sure ~how~.

I haven't needed it up to this point, and frankly don't think it will be that useful but I'd still like to ~see~ if it has some use. There have been a few instances where the quest marker appeared to point me to one location, but to GET to that location I had to take an elevator to a higher floor, cross over to another building's roof, ride the elevator down and cross back over to my original building into an other-wise inaccessible area.

The meager description says that it will show me the path to my nearest quest objective "in VATS".... but unless I'm missing something, I can only activate VATS with a target, and when I do, I can only toggle between targets (and their various body parts)... so I don't see how being in VATS mode would let me see a path, of some kind, and follow it to a quest marker.

One thing that occurred to me this morning on the drive to work, which I can check tonight, is that perhaps I can enter "VATS mode" (for purposes of VANS, anyway) just like I enter Builder mode in a settlement (middle mouse for me)?

Just a perk that's function has not been made terribly clear (unless I'm missing something obvious). :)

You hold down the VATS key or something to enter VATS without a target.

I don't remember exactly what you have to do, but you definitely don't need a target to enter VATS.

^^^ Yes. Hold down the VATS key, then take a quick look around you, you will see (at least on my screen, not sure if colors affect or not) a sort of green glowing mist, kinda like a GPS route, for you to follow. If you exit out and are running, you can chase it for a minute before it speeds off ahead of you and disappears. However, if you try to activate VANS too quickly in succession, it may not show. In this case, continue heading in the direction you were and try it a minute later.

Aaaah, thanks! Never thought to HOLD the VATS button - I am in the habit of just tapping it and thenmoving my fingers back to cycle among targets / body parts. Next time I get a spare perk I may give this thing a whirl. Thanks for the info! :D
