simple questions : Fallout: New Vegas

I have a simple qustion i just want to acsess the console commands i know your supposed to just press ~ but it is not working any suggjestions

Well it depends which keyboard you have, it's not always the ~ key, but it IS always the key to the left of 1

I actually have the same problem mine used to work but doesnt anymore.
