simple spears

spears could be ingame but not good for player use...

spears should be half put in the game if that makes sense.. by this i mean that they should be in the game, but they don't need killing animations for every creature . how would they get away with this you may ask?

firstly.. the player should be able to pick up a spear to put it in his hands, but the player should not be able to keep it in his inventory (remember that spears are big, this is easily justified) . also large creatures (giants or ogres or daedra for example) might have unusable spears (that are freakishly big)

secondly the type of "spears" available should be limited.
an iron spear
a few weak iron spears with different heads
farming tools like rakes and pitch forks
a dwarven, elven or dremora spear would be alright

this means that spears are much more limited than other weapons (similar to how medium armour in morrowind was useless because its best set failed when compared to heavy and light armour's best sets)

thirdly the use of the spear doesnt need to be complicated... simply using it defensively to ward of attackers and stabbing. mounted use and throwing would be awesome. it should be usable with a shield or magic but not another weapon . it doesnt need a block.
finishing animations should simply be an underarm or overarm stab that may involve a twist or the opponent getting stuck on the spear for a fraction of a second.

Since the Empire has fallen, people have long forgotten how to make sticks with points on the end of them. The greatest minds of Skyrim have been unable to reconstruct them, as they seem to have been made with some primitive, but truly visionary procedures and materials. Truly the Empire was the height of technological achievements and scientific prowess.

That'll probably be Bethesda's official explanation of why spears have been absent throughout Tamriel. I wouldn't be surprised. I miss my spear . . .

I think the people of Tamriel have long since forgotten hot to thrust a weapon.
Seriously Oblivion, who slashes a dagger?!

The reason why Bethesda won't put spears in skyrim. Is do to the fact that they don't want to be the ones to "polish" them

Usually I fume up and want to butcher people that are for the removal of spears, but this post has a quaint charm I may adopt.

I think the navy seals know what they're doing too. ;)
I think it's hilarious that Disney already copyrighted the title "Seal Team 6".

Spears wont be in the game despite the theme being more or less "viking" themed. Historically, the vikings used spears

Historically, Bethesda hasn't used spears. It's not something people should be expecting from Bethesda.

Well, they were in Morrowind. Not sure about Arena and Daggerfall, as I haven't played them. They were not in Oblivion, which upset people. And now they are not in Skyrim, which is still upsetting people. So, historically, Bethesda did use spears, but apparently they have evolved past using such primitive weapons.

I dont care whether bethesda have used spears before or not. Theres no reason not to put it in the game as a new thing. Its an upcoming game, so lots of things may be new. But coming from someone say who has never heard of skyrim before and looking at the character at the back , they will obviously think its about vikings :)

Arena, Daggerfall, Oblivion, and now Skyrim will not have had them. I think that's enough to warrant a "historically" label. They've had flails in more Elder Scrolls games than they've had spears.

Then I guess I was lucky to get them in Morrowind. However, I think a flail would have been cooler.

But I still say that since they had spears in Morrowind, a past game, that historically they did use spears.

Bethesda planned out their games with only one in their developer history having spears. Having anticipated that, Bethesda put spears that you can't actually use in both Arena and Daggerfall to make Morrowind players going in back to play the older games suffer as they can't use spears, but are constantly teased by them. :P

aaaand, this is why we won't have spears. They don't want to just half-ass it.
Just like with mounts, if they can do it right, it will be in if not, it won't be. Difference is they couldn't do spears right...

I personally rarely used spears in Morrowind, but damnit they are easily the coolest-looking weapon for guards to wield. Just imagine the steps up to the stronghold in Solitude, lined with pairs of Norse guards standing erect, holding their spears against the ground. A clumsy sword or axe just wouldn't have the same wow factor!

Although I am more than happy that halberds and pole-arms will be in. Some people want stabby spears, but as far as I'm concerned these are just spears with chopping animations and I'm perfectly content with them.

Who said pole-arms of any kind will be in? Seriously, I'd love a lance for horseback riding.
