Pay attention to the things people tell you. Use your journal. You'll have no compass, so you'll have to find your own directions - but people WILL tell you where things are if you ask them, and your journal will keep track of these notes.
It's very easy to die early on, but don't get discouraged. If you're outmatched, just run from the fight. Your character will get stronger if you give him/her time.
Finally, don't expect to be able to do everything in the game that's worth doing with one character - you can't pick up skills easily like you can in Skyrim and the quest lines for each faction will conflict with the interests of the other factions, thereby making it impossible for you to please everyone.
As for mods - I don't have any installed. I'm just running a vanilla copy of Morrowind + both of the official plugins (Bloodmoon, Tribunal) and I'm having plenty of fun.
