Since everyone raves about Morrowind, should I get it?

So I am about Skyrim'ed out. Everyone raves about Morrowind, and reading about the lore is awesome. Should I get it (PC). If so, what mods should I get?

It's the game that set the Elder Scrolls franchise. So if you love the series you should play it.

I tried it myself but I couldn't stand the combat system and unfortunately I have no way to play it now, but I do love the lore and story tenderly interwoven with the game. If plot and alternative worlds are you're thing, you'll definitely love it. Just don't expect any hand holding.

Pay attention to the things people tell you. Use your journal. You'll have no compass, so you'll have to find your own directions - but people WILL tell you where things are if you ask them, and your journal will keep track of these notes.

It's very easy to die early on, but don't get discouraged. If you're outmatched, just run from the fight. Your character will get stronger if you give him/her time.

Finally, don't expect to be able to do everything in the game that's worth doing with one character - you can't pick up skills easily like you can in Skyrim and the quest lines for each faction will conflict with the interests of the other factions, thereby making it impossible for you to please everyone.

As for mods - I don't have any installed. I'm just running a vanilla copy of Morrowind + both of the official plugins (Bloodmoon, Tribunal) and I'm having plenty of fun.

it's my favorite game of all time. Once you get to about level 8 youll hit everything you want to almost every time. everyone complains about the dice roll system, but its only hit or miss for the first few hours. its simulating dodges and misses. There is so much freedom in Morrowind, you can kill ANYONE and if you kill an important npc it tells you you screwed up the main quest but you can continue anyway. You can craft any spell you want, and you cant join every guild like in the newer TES games. Say you join the thieves guild, you might not be able to join the fighters guild because they have disputes.

It has countless hours of things to do. People still play it after 10 years.

As for mods, MGSO 2.0. Thats the only one I use.

was in the sMe situation was skyrim out and bought morrowind and only did the overhaulgrpahics mod. It is fantastic, if ur looking for a story driven and rich landscape and people and politics then its the game for ya. Its only 20 bucks on steam and the mge frrom kingpix is by far the easiest mod ive ever installed, damn thing installs itself. Plus it dosent upset the vanilla aspects by adding alot of stuff not in the game. I actually dont have a problem with the combat, I think its fine but thats me. Its by far a more richer experience than I got in skyrim and I believe handsdown its got the best mq of the tes series. Pay attention to what people say and read ur joirnal and its hatd not to get entreached in the culture.

If a game starts out by pushing u off a boat with 80 gold and a handful of papaers and told to survive, then this is the game for you.

This is the mod that Redneck is referring to (I believe) and also the only mod you'd ever need in my opinion.

Morrowind is a beloved game that is still played today. I just finished a Bloodmoon/Tribunal run through in 2011, XBOX version. Even with the old graphics and slow loading, it's 100x more fun than Oblivion or Skyrim

Morrowind isn't for everyone, but it is a very good game. If you like RPGs and don't mind slower paced games, this is a great game. The game kinda hates modern PCs, but it is kind enough to try to like them... Unlike some older games from the mid and early 2000's.

Same here, except the only mod I run is the one that stops you from being forcibly changed into a werewolf every day after you finish the Bloodmoon quest line. Bloodmon still has the best looking werewolves too!

Try the Morrowind Code Patch. In addition to plenty of bugfixes it also adds a few features that will make your life in Morrowind so much easier and pleasant!
Especially the optional features for inventory management, sneak toggle, etc.:

And if cliff racers start to annoy you in the game, you may also want to consider some Cliff Racer Extinction mod.

Or you can go mod crazy!:
