Depends on what you want. On Steam workshop, mods cannot be larger than 100 MB (or maybe it was 200?). Also, every single mod on Steam Workshop has to be in bsa and esp files. No esm files or loose files.
HOWEVER, I love Steam Workshop for its simplicity. Though I also use Nexus too and I have the Nexus Mod Manager as well for the mods that aren't on the Workshop (I do have SMIM in NMM because I didn't want three parts like on the Workshop)
Oh, and below my post, a lot of people will hate on and bash the Workshop because they don't know any better.
The simplicity is one of the worst sides of Workshop. It gives too simplified image of modding, like it's just download & play when in reality it's much more demanding. One must understand that mods require management, things like load order are very important. Forced updates can also cause severe issues.
I use Nexus but I don't hate the Steam Workshop, I just like to know what and where the files are going in my install directory (manual installs).
Steam workshop is pretty good.
Nexus is also pretty good.
Check out both and see which one you like but be careful about things like load order as some mods conflict with others.
All mods on the workshop go as esp and bsa files in the data directory, lol. Since there are no loose files, keeping track of mods isn't exactly a hard.
Oh and regarding load order. That is CRUCIAL. Do not just use a load order you think'll work. Trust me. Use BOSS for all your sorting needs.
The more control over the files, the better. So for me it is Nexus (or pretty much any other modding site with mods archives in .zip, .rar or .7zip) and Wrye Mash with it's wonderful "Installers" feature.
For a change of pace, I do know better.
Steam Workshop is constrained. There is a prohibitively low file size cap, there is no option system for installs like the FOMOD system, you can't upload ESMs, you can't upload multiple files to a single page, updates are forced (and since there's no quality control beyond the mod-maker, you may get saddled with a broken mod update FUBARing your game with no way to un-update it), you can't upload loose files (which means you have to expend a module load order slot for just simple retextures or replacers) and they only recently started taking mod theft and ripping seriously, and the moderation staff there is so laissez-faire that it's questionable they're even around most of the time.
It's mod user friendly, it is not in the LEAST mod maker friendly.
Conversely, Nexus is the opposite of all those. Well, except the mod theft bit. They always dropped the hammer on that.
But not everyone has any need for mods over 100 MB. I only have a few that large and even larger. Most of my mods are in the 20 MB area for which Steam is PERFECT for that. Oh and the fact it autodownloads updates is just neat. One less thing I need to concern myself with. I do have NMM for larger mods but that's but a few. I even have SkyUI from the Workshop working without a hitch.
I've never had that happen and I've used Steam Workshop for a long time so I don't really care. It's not hard recreating a save should I lose it, btw. Stats can be dealt with using console commands.
Indeed.
The limitations on the Steam Workshop mean that things like http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/users/571605/?tb=mods&pUp=1 armour re-textures aren't available there - they're loose files.
I also assume some of the more complex mods like http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/37216/?, http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/35470/? et cetera aren't there.
The Steam Workshop's fine as far as it goes but for a lot of mods you have to look elsewhere.
Well because everyone uses retextures and overhaul mods, right???
For smaller mods, the Workshop is great and the mods are easy to track. For larger mods, obviously, I use NMM.
Just because it hasn't happened to you doesn't make it any smaller risk at all.
And I never stated otherwise. I just don't care what the risk is.
If you only want to have a few little mods, Steam Workshop will be fine.
If you want to go deep into modding, you will need more control, which you can get only with a mod manager, which are more or less incompatible with the Steam Workshop.
Sure, I've nothing against the Steam Workshop at all - I just don't use it.
Another thing is the Unofficial Patches. The USKP got too big for the workshop so it had to be taken down, anyone wanting the latest version has to use Nexus.
Well I don't use the unofficial patches and Skyrim plays well enough for me.
You have no idea how many broken things it fixes, do you?
The disastrous mess of bugs that is the quest "Blood On The Ice".
The conspicuously empty Thalmor party.
The fort observer quest that doesn't self-shut-down after you take over a civil war-involved fort before the Battle of Whiterun, meaning the associated Civil War faction doesn't move in after the first.
Captain Lonely-Gale becoming the Steward after Brunwulf takes over as Jarl of Windhelm.
Dragons at dragon walls visited a second or later time not absorbing.
Wolves no longer howling when going into standoff if you have Dawnguard installed.
The mixup with words of power between Marked for Death and DG's Drain Vitality.
The disastrous mess that is the weapon wall mount scripts (which are still a work in progress cleaning them out last I heard)
