Since when is 8/10 bad?

Post » Sun Jan 09, 2011 4:14 pm

Seems like there are a few low scores that people are freaking out about, well I could show you a few 9's and 10's.

Overall, it seems to be averaging out to about an 8. Sure, it might be a bit lower than i expected (was hoping for a 9 or so) but as far as i know, 8 still means its a good game.

All of these people coming on to say how the reviews are horrible, so they wont buy; or telling you not to believe the reviews for whatever reason; or offering a more "unbiased review". Why is an 8 seen as horrible in the first place? An 8 could easily mean that its a good game, but not for everyone, since a 10 in my mind would have to be a game that everyone will love.

In conclusion, ill leave you a quote from the Sh*t My Dad Says twitter
"Don’t focus on the one guy who hates you. You don’t go to the park and set your picnic down next to the only pile of dog sh*t."

Exactly. I don't think there's a better way to put it.

9 & 10 equal a good game nowadays.

7 & 8 equal a game for fans of the genre.

5 & 6 are rubbish.

Everything below is not worth to exist.

7.5-8.0 is my idea of a perfect game. 9-10 titles are generally (yes generally) games that had huge, Hollywood, budgets. These games have such high production values (near limitless funds) that would be difficult to screw them up. But in many cases, 9-10 scores are anything but perfect (GTA4, I'm looking at you). I've gotta go to work, but my point is that games with 7.5 to 8.0 are the games that I've had the most fun with.

That is a good representation of gaming scores nowadays.

Apparently 8 is the new 5 or 6?

The same way that a 68 is failing on many test scores.... the entire range isn't used. Credit is given for producing a competent game, and for the most place only competent games get released on consoles with their high distribution and licensing costs. Thus 90% of reviews on many sites fall within the 6.0-9.5 gap, and a 8.0 is entirely average.

When games cost 60 dollars and there are dozens of shooters to choose from, someone seeing a 7.5 or 8.0 and being dissuaded is perfectly reasonable. And since there is no demo, saying try it for themselves is silly because it would cost thousands of dollars to try every game for yourself.

it seems these days if a game is not a 9 or 10 then it must be a failure. I remember IGN giving one of my favorite game series this generation Assassin Creed like a 7, but when I played it it was definitely at least a 9 in my opinion. I hope people don't look at just a few bad review scores and make their judgments.

I usually look at metacritc or game rankings for the overall review score, watch some videos and hear/read some impression from other players as well.

To.. many.. numbers... :geek:

Play the game for yourself. If you don't like it, return it. If you do, keep playing.

The reviewer on 1UP comes across as a 10-year-old with an infusion of proper grammar. His "review" is hardly objective and is filled with prejudiced snipes from the get-go.

Disgusting.
