A single cell manor

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 6:16 pm

Hello. It's always been my dream to have a huge manor that seats my ~20 companions and doesn't consist of ~20 cells. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything like this from the numerous mods I've been through. So, I decided to make something like this on my own. I started a few days ago and by now I've realized why there are no houses like that - it's pretty impossible to create with the standard CS objects. Sure, there are, for an example, the mages/fighters guild premade rooms. But most of them are closed or only have one entrance/exit. So, I wouldn't mind (actually I would prefer) making the house bit-by-bit by myself. But the only viable tiles I found for this were the ungrd-ones. Unfortunately they look okay for say, a dungeon or a basemant but if I were to use them for a manor it would come out pretty horrible. I even tried retexturing them, in which I failed. It was just too complex for me  . So as my last resort I came here, hoping that someone could help me. In short, all I ask for is tiles that I could use in the making of a manor.
Thanks in advance,
tyger.

If your problem with multi-cell houses is the load time from room to room, you might try to place all interiors in the same cell. I've never tried it, but, I am pretty sure there would be no load time. Just make sure they are way apart from each other (say 10,000 units) and the clip distance is less than that distance (say 5,000)

That would still ruin the freedom of freely roaming around the house. But it's thinkable, if no other option pops out. I wonder if companions could use such doors?

Unfortunately, the interior set for houses aren't designed to properly align with each other in the same cell.

They should be able to. The first level of the IC Palace is set up in this manner and the guards "upstairs" will use the door to come "downstairs" if you start a fight the the guards there.

You would need to put each interior mesh within a http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/SubSpace, to tell the AI that there is no direct route from one room to another, so the NPCs have to use a door. But I am not that familiar with this and there may be other glitches with companions.

As for placing everything in a single interior mesh, with all the furniture and trinkets usually present in each room, at the time the game was released, computers/video cards could not handle that much rendering. I suppose nowadays this is not as bad.
20+ NPCs at the same time is also very hard to handle.

You can find tiles specifically intended to be retextured in the: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=15940. A sample house, constructed from the tiles, is included in the documentation. The Kit is intended for modders who wish to create things like houses, bridges, tables, etc. without having to learn a 3D modeler like Blender. It does require a basic understanding of NifSkope. Good luck.

Okays, big thanks to you guys. I've began the construction of my house, the progress is... well slow but I can't wait to reach the stage when I can start decorating. I've always been more of a decorator than an architect type of person I suppose.

Find the Testing Hall, copy it, rename it and use it in your own space - it has dozens of doorways that can be removed and you can just attach another copy of the testing hall or any other 'house or room interior that has a doorway.
This way you can make an interior as large as your system can handle... all without using a load door except the one to get in and out of .
Easy to 'fancy' it up as well because every furniture item, utensil, ornament, lamps, tapestry, paintings, books etc., are already in the testing hall just waiting for your touch!

Good luck, make lots of copies and while making the mod start from a NEW gamesave before you go looking in game and DON'T save while you are looking in game and then go and do more modding or when you look again you'll have NPCs and doors doubled.
