If there was a game that could make me emotional, that would be a great SP game. The game needs to have a story that can svck you into it, there are ways to cover up an decent story(gameplay and such), but a bad story will completely ruin SP. Good SP absolutely needs great music to go along with the story, great story that keeps you svcked in, memorable scenes, and great gameplay, all without glitches since those will totally ruin the experience. Visuals should only be added to enhance the experience.
Sorry to all the Crysis lovers out there, I didn't care for the story of Crysis/Warhead. The gameplay/visuals helped cover it up, but it only had a decent story.
MP is the key component to a longer lasting experience though. A great SP can last for several replays, but it will get repetitive after so long. Games like TF2 and L4D are great MP titles, because Valve spent so much time on the MP and made them different than all the other repeats out there. Having something different is the only way to keep a loyal user base, so the MP needs something special that keeps the community alive.
To answer your question, single player should be the best part of the game at the beginning(before it gets repetitive), but it isn't necessary for a good, replayable game(TF2 and l4d both have me playing them for hours on end and both don't have SP).
