Single Player Story: How important is it to you?

Post » Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:36 pm

Dreohboy,

For someone who stated that FPS is not there gender, you presume to know a lot more then someone who just played Doom for 20 minutes at a time. If this is your first post, I liked it. Your insight to how compeling a storyline should be is absolutely correct. More then the game just carrying itself on technological eye candy; a storyline that compels one to feel like they participated in something of a grand scale would be the ultimate acheivement. Thanks.

I want it to last, be difficult but achievable through persistence, and gripping; no Cliffhangers, leave it open for another, but I want it to poop on the first ,,,

I deeply agree with this idea. :)

for me i think it would be a intersting to have it end a wtf! moment not many games do that. some that i play just leave it open for the next so your like yes they're going to make another one! but like dead space were it ended you were just like wtf whats going to happen next knowing that they probably going to make another game but, you have no idea what happened to your character or anything. :)

Crysis 1 had a cliff hanger ending for theatrics.

I don't think it's very good idea to devote any significant development resources to the story. The reason is, the game is supposed to be played more than once; the story is, by definition, one-time journey; when you play 2nd time and more, it gradually becomes annoying, and the more elaborate it is, the more annoying it becomes, because you already know the intrigue. In Crysis 1, the memorable moment for me was the final showing of Nomad in the very last frame of the game.

It might be interesting though to combine, probably in some future game, FPS with mystery-and-puzzle game, so you have the choice of either battling your way through, or resolving some secret puzzle, or finding some secret passage around. An example might be if in Crysis 1 the hero had to actually find the way through the maze in the cave, or find the way in some nontrivial labyrinth of underground tunnels near the battleship in the harbor - much more nontrivial than was there, with dead ends, loops, and such, finally finding the shaft directly to the docked ship.

I want the single-player to be done right, but i'm less focused on the story.
CoD4 didn't have such a great story, you were so briefly introduced to the characters, no personal moments in the game (except maybe the end), you thought you would be chasing Al-Asad through the whole game, but no, he gets beat up and then shot.
Maybe it's the introduction the the modern setting, but what i thought made the campaign more memorable was the level design, like being beastily sneaky on the prypiat level, the tight battles in "No Fighting in the War Room". I can also say this for other games like Portal, Bad Companies, Goldeneye, and quite a few others. The only exception I can name was Halo and its sequels.

I still want a believable story,at least though.

Crysis 2 must have a good Single player experience and story. Halo Reach failed there, that's why Crysis 2 must fix that problem.

I played Crysis mostly for MP experience well because it was an intelligent challenge with so many possibilities how to win.

I played SP it was cool till I was doing Koreans the UFO (excluding zero gravity lvl) was ble.

The story in a game is the most important part of it imo. The SP in a game is what makes me buy a game. If I didn't like the SP I won't buy the game. If I like the game I will buy it and try the MP and if I like that I will use many, many ours with it :)

So if the story isn't good enough I won't buy the game :)

For me, the story for Crysis 1 was adaptive. You change your tactics along the way, a simplicity in the beginning, an assault to debu and an Alien invasion to repel, the combination that kept me playing for hours, maybe even days to finish and conclude in that cliffhanger ending. So Crysis 2 Sp must be worth it, we all waited three years for this sequel right.

I dont care about singleplayer at all. Singleplayer is for a week, maybe two. Multiplayer (good multiplayer) for 6-10 years. By the way, the best singleplayer happens when you control Mr.47 :D

I prefer Mr. 44.

But whether or not the campaign is fun or not determines the replay value.
You can only experience the story once, but you can experience good gameplay a thousand times.

Some games have great campaigns, some are repetitive, some are just plain terrible, and some have Ninja Vision.
[Press (B) for Ninja Vision = lol]

The usual suspects for a lasting campaign would be:
Difficulty - A challenging game can keep you coming back for more like a terrible song that sticks in your head like a needle.

"Epicness" - Not only how awesome it is the first time, but how awesome it manages to stay for the next 10 times.

Teh Lulz - Halo would be a good example, where anything can happen. You could snipe that guy... Or you could accidentally hit an explosive that sends a traffic cone flying at your face with lethal speed. (C-Owned!)

Keeping It Fresh - a lot of games use different methods for this, like changing story-lines, changing environments, ect. Left 4 Dead is a good example, where zombies, weapons, and types of enemies are spawned randomly albeit with a filter-type thing that determines how well you're doing, and how tough the game should be on you.

That's my idea of it anyway. Give me a cat.

I DONT GIVE A **** ABOUT THE STORY I HAVE MY OWN LIFE
STORY I JUST WANT A FUN GAME STOP RUINING GAMES FOR
STORY AND **** MULTIPLAYERS SAKE!!!!! >:O oh and SP for the win ;)
If you have a console want a good single-player game with a crap story I'd recommend Ninja Gaiden 2. (No, it's not the one with "Ninja Vision"... lol)
If you have a PC I'd recommend asking someone else.

This does not seem like your type of game is all I'm saying.

I think story is important. Without it you have a dead shell of a game. What is the point of playing a game or watching a movie if the main character has no purpose. If the character just roams around shooting people for no reason then you feel like you are doing nothing. It is your opinion of course, but I have and always will believe in a story.

crysis 2 has talked a lot about bringing emotion into their game, you CARE about NYC, you feel REMORSE for the victims of the attack, and that FUELS you to go and whoop their ass, which makes it that much more satisfying when you kick a two ton car through their chest cavity. I dont know if crytek will deliver this. if they do, whoopee. if they dont, i just hope i get some good fight in, like in crysis 1. i love single player, i really do. but when it dosnt turn out to be that good i usually dont mind
