Single Player Story: How important is it to you?

Post » Mon Nov 01, 2010 9:06 pm

Hi everyone,

This is my first post, so please be kind.

I wanted to first let everyone know that FPS titles are not a genre that I normally play. For as far back as I can remember DOOM has been the only FPS that I've played to the end. Not because I don't enjoy them, but because I suffer from simulation sickness when I play first person shooters for more than 20 minutes at a time. Back in the day of the Sega Saturn I tried to get through Turok....played it for about two weeks...felt like I was dying after those two weeks.

Anyway, FPS generally aren't my thing. As such, multiplayer online gaming isn't much my thing either.

But I love me a good tear jerker, a good cliff hanger, a good old fashioned save the world from evil aliens AND CARE ABOUT THE PEOPLE IN THE GAME THAT I'M FIGHTING THE ALIENS FOR.

I think a lot of the multiplatform FPS titles that are released today don't really delve too deeply into the story aspect of their game. IMHO, they focus on making the replayability the #1 priority, but they leave out the memorable parts that distinguish the story from what other developers have done. Medal of Honor, COD, Battlefield....interchangeable stories and worlds with varying weapons and game mechanics.

I'm hoping that EA will create a world where the antagonist are memorable. Where the gamer will actually want to defend his/her virtual world from a threat. I hope they create an alien species with depth, cause, reasoning, history...purpose...

In essence I want the story to be just as compelling as the gameplay. I'm talking Half Life 2 / Resistance Fall of Man / Halo (yes...I went there)....compelling.

Sure, we all want great multiplayer too. We all want some of the sandbox feel we all love in Crysis. But I'm hoping we all want Crysis 2 to be remembered for it's story just as much as for the technology that brings the story to our computer monitors and our TVs. Sure, Crysis is an enjoyable, GREAT looking sandbox FPS. But other than the tech, and the sandbox aspects....what else is there that differentiates it from the avalanche of other FPS out there?

I hope I'm not in the minority of Crysis fans that want a good single player story.

Done with my vent.

Oh, and congratulate me. I played Crysis for almost two hours tonight. I'm at the portion right after we're first allowed to drive a tank (after you call in the air strike on the boat). That is the longest I've ever played a FPS in one sitting. :-D

To me, fairly important but it won't carry an otherwise poor game.

The reason i absolutely adored Bioshock was because it's story was so different to every other game out at the time (war this, future that) and i was completely svcked in by the story behind it. The fact that it was a great game in most other aspects makes it one of my favourite games of all time.

I remember back to the mid-nineties, playing Doom and *reading* the storyline, learning about UAC and why the demons were here, portal to the moon, etc. I know that the storyline behind Doom really got me involved in the game but it was such a pioneer in it's own right that it stood out from the crowd because the crowd really wasn't that big at the time, not compared to today anyway.

I think if a game truely wants to stand out from the crowd today then it needs to have its eggs in every basket and deliver it well. I wouldn't say that BC2's storyline was anything amazing but the rest of the game helped deliver it and make it something a bit more special. If you read BC2's storyline you'd probably vomit in your mouth a bit but the way the engine could deliver that storyline with the sonic booms, the epic visuals and audio, it really helped put the whole package together.

So yeah, you've gotta have more than just one thing if you want to make something special today.

Pretty important seeing as I have know idea how the MP will be, which is why I am waiting on the MP test before I decide if this game is a day one buy or something that I buy just for SP from the bargain bin.

I'm hoping for a solid 7-14 hour campaign that I can replay at least once (maybe with new game+ option), but I usually spend the most time with the MP.

Congratz on the 2 hrs!
To me the story line is just as important (if not more important)
than the gameplay it's self. Now, i am not a serious gamer myself (I only have a Dell Inspiron) but i have played Crysis, Crysis Warhead, Crysis Wars (PC) and Halo on the X-box arcade and i believe that Crysis is in it's own league. Nothing compares to its overall graphics, storyline and gameplay.

If all of what i'v read, heard and seen about C2 is true then this is going to be one hell of a game!!

I hope Crysis 2 will have a GREAT story, epic charac and antagonists.
And have a REAL hero as main charac, not an "Action-man" ......

I hope whan we say "Crysis", we remember a very, very great game.
By his story, charac, graphism and MP.

Single player by far is important. (To me anyways).

MP doesn't make a game. You could say that before MP made it's debut in games, single player was what many players vouched for. Of course though, there are many games that did pioneer online gaming (PC games like Unreal Tournament for example), but really, single player tells a story, a story sometimes you learn stuff from.

I'm going to go back in time and talk about Zelda (Specifically Links Awakening, since that was my first Zelda game on the Nintendo Gameboy). That game was all about story, which is what made me read better, and write properly. Same goes for MGS, which had such a flare in it's story, it made you stick in.

SP plays a huge role in most games, whereas some games it doesn't need to be required. BC2 is a great example of a game that doesn't need a storyline (Although I must admit, I liked the characters), but obviously, it has a storyline with some potential, so they can improve.

Overall, I like my games with story, it keeps me thinking about stuff, and it makes games more interesting.

You're right sahdev.

A rich story, and a good protagonist will make Crysis 2 Epic !

Just add some better weapons with abundant ammo, and it will be spectacular.

First pls allow me to offer my congrats, lol. hope you enjoyed so far, onslaught is fun and in two stages, I actually got one of the smaller enemy tanks clear up the mountains over the top then down and of the edge of the map,

Single play is may fav transit to the multi, this is where we can be intro'd to the story and gameplay, get a feel for the envirioment equipment, and play style. the initital story and background is very imprtant to me.

Multiplay, in many cases would fail IMHO without some good substance, Indeed BFBC2 Multi, has an entire section of awards, and a number of these can only be achieved in single play, in that case, you depend on single play achievements to add to your overall online results, and hall it was just plain fun to be Marlow, lol

Story is very important. I dont want see crysis 2 like a dumb shooter. But! You're right game must be replayable, and story can be touching,exiting,but..withnot any "key" moments like a traitors etc... IMHO hard to replay calmly,if you khow your teammate traitor...

I consider the storyline too be very important as it provides the motivation to continue playing and adds some replay value, while this can be compensated by other mediums such as great gameplay, graphics and audio, the single player is what provides depth. (its also important to crysis 2 because the story is already started, to crash on story in the middle of the series would not be recomended)

the single player is useless.........

So...you're just looking for the next FPS that doesn't truly distinguish itself from other shooters except by the assets used to create the images on the screen?

Aliens attacking new york to you means nothing because it could be any creater/person in any city/desert/island blowing facing off against any enemy.... you don't care about the story at all?

Oh well. As far as Crysis 2 gamers go I hope you're in the minority.

Obviously Zukov doesn't like Crysis. All he's after is the engine. He doesn't even like the Nanosuit.
