And that's what we get for the most part ... aside from having to join numerous factions to get shouts or certain items like 'unusual gems' if you know what I mean.

I agree with wanting greater NPC interactions/dialogue, get rid of the quest markers and put in directions/ riddles you have to find/follow. I wouldn't even mind having to fill in the map as you explore the province, hate the Google earth: Skyrim edition map and a whole lot of other classic FRPG elements could be restored.

Still it doesn't negate the fact that i love Skyrim and think it's the best FRPG I've found and love the combat system. It could be better but then again it could be a hell of a lot worse.

There are some points we will disagree on but there's nothing wrong with that, it's natural for gamers to have different view points.

Exactly!

It's like people get kicks out of being an outsider, not following the mainstream, I saw the title and the 'I'm an old TES roadie' along with the paragraphs you used to explain why you dislike the game, you're just another one of these Morrowind supremacists that doesn't want a TES 6, you want a Morrowind 2.

There's nothing wrong with Morrowind being your most favoured TES game, but it's when people let their nostalgia get in the way, and use it as the perfect example as to what every TES should be like....move on. The fact that you think Morrowind had the perfect UI, is not fact, it's YOUR OPINION, granted the Skyrim UI wasn't popular amongst PC players.

I'm not targetting anyone in particular, but I see a lot of people berating Oblivion and Skyrim, and boasting about being TES veterans, and how they should be like Morrowind, let them try something different.

(rant over).

Lol Bethesda will never make cuts to their games in search for greater money. Every TES game has sold like hotcakes. They don't need to appease anyone. The devs made a game that they thought THEY would like to play. Look up the DICE speech by Todd Howard. He goes over all of this. The focus of the game was on immersion and atmosphere. You might not remember specific quests or characters you made, but will you ever forget the landscape, the exploration of the Holds of Skyrim, and the grand, questing atmosphere presented?

As I've wrote, NPC interraction/dialogue is one of Skyrim's fine points. Sure, I dislike having personality-less companions (when compared to Fallout NV), but it's better than no companion/npc interraction at all, and anyway changes in this domain affects me little. However, the FRPG elements were, for me, at the core of my TES experience. It is the straw that broked the camel's back for me.

I agree with the rest of your points, including the one that states that Skyrim is still loveable.

Must have something good they did in Morrowind, then. Huh?

Yeah, well at least up until TES VI hits the shelves, when all of this will be obsolete and forgotten.

I'd say the same for Skyrim as well, given how many people are defending it in this thread. Both are great games. This is a great series. Focus on the good and less on the bad, and you'll have thousands of hours of gameplay in it too.

Then people will be calling the next one watered down and for casuals and so on.

Nope it's just that people for some reason feel superior because they like old "real" games and everything after was betreyer and made for "kiddies" or "casuals" or "consol gamers"

Morrowind wasn't perfect it had multiple faults that later games fixed, there was little depth to generic npc, dice roll combat was really bad.

Skyrim wasn't perfect it had UI made mostly for consols, it had to combine armor parts,

We all can have our own opinion personaly I enjoyed Oblivion the most of the newer elder scrolls but ultimatley all I am saying is that no elder scrolls was the best one that every other elder scrolls should emulate.

People complained about spears, the Open spell, spellmaking, Absorb Health, elemental resistance magic and using staves as blunt weapons? They complained about weakness to x spells? They complained about wearing robes over armor?

See where Oblivion is as of now? Well, that's exacly where Skyrim will be when VI will be out. Maybe lower, since replayability is lower than Oblivion. When it got out, Oblivion was Teh [censored], and Morrowind was dated pre-history. Then why so much Morrowind die-hards today (that's not my impression)? I don't know - why don't you tell me?

It's a passing thing, and this is more and more true with the newest outings. The Rolling Stones were much more famous for "Start Me Up" than they were for "She's So Cold".

You are old OP. That's all it is. TES has changed. You have to get used to the fact that Skyrim is the RE5 of the TES series. Next one will likely be the RE6 so that should turn off the remainders of the old fans. You are not the target audience anymore. You either roll with it or say goodbye.

(joking btw :P )

No, but they did complain about things like fortify (insert useless skill here), and weapon degradation, as well as the dice roll gameplay for morrowind, and the way the journal was designed (which I liked due to all the detail, but people complained regardless for saying it got confusing, and now its gone :( )

The replayability is most certainly not lower in my opinion. There will be Skyrim die hards as well, you watch.

At it's core, they are both extremely similar games, exploration, immersion etc

Considering the thousands of hours people have put into this game (Including myself) I wouldn't put money on it. ATM I'm skipping around on the games and have gone back into Oblivion since I've never finished the MQ and have decided to ramrod it then go back to leisurely exploration, basking in the cities and starting the DLC which I've never even done before.

For all of its fun though (Not to mention the Arena and quests) I always find myself back in Skyrim. While Oblivion has its good points it won't get my top vote, Skyrim will. And its kind of indicative of your viewpoint when You're at the Blades stronghold outside Bruma looking at the mountains to the north and thinking. ~Skyrim is just over those mountains through Pale Pass~ :tes:

Pretty much this. Although in principle I agree with some of the complaints the OP made about Skyrim, there are better ways to express those complaints.

And as someone who plays TES on all three platforms, I don't have any need to engage in platform wars. Like you said, the best way to handle stuff like this is to not engage. Besides, the shortcomings of Skyrim have already been hashed to death over the past two years.

Yeah. I think this will happen to Skyrim too. If you looked at GTA 4 when it came out, best game ever. 10/10 everywhere. Now that GTA 5 is coming out, suddenly everyone out of nowhere says GTA 4 svcks. It the thing that if it's not new it svcks. Mainly the reason why Skyrim is "the best game ever". Because it's the most recent one.

The games do lose options and functionality from being made for consoles, but at least Bethesda is still making dev kits so the modders can get it back to what it would have been if it were made for PC to begin with.

And I can agree with the OP that they stuck too close to an Oblivion-style mainstream in the art and quest design, that overall makes Skyrim pretty but blander than it could have been. It should have been wilder, harsher and darker. I really hope in TES IV they embrace the weird and make a place that feels truly foreign and unique.

It has nothing to do with consoles vs PC. Final Fantasy X was a full fledged RPG and it was a PS2 game.

You'd be surprised at the number of die hard Oblivion fans still lingering nowadays. Talk to them and they'll insist the game is superior in every way minus graphics.

Exactly. I always laugh when I read people comments on how Skyrim is so casual and watered down compared to Oblivion. Only a few years ago the exact same things were said about Oblivion.

Skyrim isn't an RPG focused on attributes and quest branches. We get it. Really. And guess what? We like it anyway. So if you're upset that your precious stat lines were stripped away from you, don't cry to us. Go message the Grandstaff of Charming or something.

Nobody really cares, and all this does is make the people who enjoy this game annoyed and the people who do nothing but troll this game come out of their holes. I could respect these criticisms if most of them weren't totally ridiculous. "Skyrim is designed for one character on console". Complete invalidates your opinion.

Having played all 5 main titles in the series and having Morrowind as my most favorite of all times, I still really enjoyed Skyrim, more than I think I would. I guess a lot of it comes down to expectations, it's a trend in gaming nowadays for everything to look cool but with reduced content. That's kind of what I expect Skyrim to be in the first place, it would look super nice but would feel hollow inside. But once I played the game, I feel they've done a good job balancing this new gaming trend with the merit of the seires. While character creation and a lot of RP elements are lost. The exploration value, diversity of race and location, crafting system, follower system and home building all made up for those losses in the end (at least for me). And perhaps most importantly, unlike Oblivion or Arena, both of which are painfully generic and lack a unique style in my opinion, Skyrim is more like Morrowind or Daggerfall in this aspect, that this game actually feels very exotic due to the heavy focus on Nordic culture. Nords may not be as exotic as Dunmers or Redguards, but I think they are well presented in this game and I'm very happy for that (poor Imperials and Cyrodiil and Oblivion...)

2 Side notes, all of my main characters are magic focused in TES, and I still really like Skyrim because for the first time higher level spells actually look different than a novice spell. Something I wanted for a very very long time. Other than that, music is superb in Skyrim, the best in the series as a matter of fact.
