Sitting down...

Post » Tue Mar 15, 2011 12:38 am

So.. Actually being able to sit down in a chair was a nice addition in Oblivion in my opinion. After doing it a couple of times I just kind of stopped though, as it really didn't do anything practical, so I only sat down when i really had my roleplaying hat on :celebrate:

I would maybe have liked it if it had some practical purpose like healing, passing time quicker or whatever, I'm not really sure. Any suggestions or thoughts on the matter?

Sitting is such a waste of time that I simply don't care if it's in or not or how it works. Useless.

I agree with the OP, it could really benefit from some practical purpose. maybe reducing sleep deprivation slightly if that is included in Skyrim.

In real life, sitting has relation with fatigue and confort. If one of those factors are including in the game, sitting will be usefull. Anyway, it's good to have the option to interact with objects in the way that they would be interacted with in reality.

I like them, mostly RPG reasns.

Anyone else during the main quest to find the Blade dude at the tavern and sit down next to him for him to whisper you to follow him an the agent downstairs?

Awesome.

Also be cool to just ly on the bed too.

Duble the fatigue magicka return.

Also be able to use small range weapons and spells from chairs. Hell Yeah.

It was too limited for me in Oblivion in the sense that I'd have liked to be able to sit down anywhere I want and not just in a chair. Sit down on a boulder or near a pond, that sort of thing. I don't mind whether it has specific benifits, though if sleep/rest is going to be relevant, then it should be tied to that somehow.

i actually think the option to sit should be taken away.
all it did in oblivion was annoy me, like when i'd decorate my house & set something on a chair then try to pick it up later only to accidentally sit then the item goes flying across the room hitting a shelf knocking down other items!

Just hope for better physics then, not take away things.

There is at least one mod (I think two) that do this in oblivion.

In Oblivion, the only time my fatigue meter ever got low was if I was jumping around trying to increase my acrobatics.

If fatigue is included in Skyrim I hope it is done in a more relevant way.

To increase the point of sitting down, as well as increasing regeneration in general, it could maybe increase NPC's when in conversation with them because it would make them feel more casual/less intimidated. Just thinking out loud now but there needs at least a point to it :S

I think it really also depends how especially fatigue will work in Skyrim. If it works like it did in Oblivion, it won't really be relevant... I liked the idea someone had about also being able to sit on a boulder or something, especially if fatigue worked in a more Daggerfall-ish way. Then, when you have walked for a long time to the ancient ruin, still 5 miles to go, you can restore your fatigue by sitting down.

Then it would be is if time didn't stop whenever you read a book. Or if you have someone following you, you can both sit down and then talk whilst recovering fatigue quicker. This is however only relevant if fatigue works in a specific way... But I would actually like for it to work in that way!

For you maybe. Others, including me, do like the option and would be very annoyed if it got taken away. If you don't like it, then don't use it.
I like it primarily for RP reasons.

There are Dragons out there, roasting your fellow Nords for skewers :flame: . There's no time to sit and relax. :gun:
Seriously though, I only sat down in Oblivion when an NPC would explicitly invite me to do so (Umbacano, for example). I think simply more of such invitations ("Please, have a seat") would be perfectly enough for the feature not to be superfluous.

I think we need the option to sit anywhere like in other games, not just on seats and benches, like beside a river or in the middle of a snowy field

It should be more useful. It should maybe restore fatigue and should come in as a factor when you eat.

Every action you do, and every item in the game even, should have a purpose. No matter how small. Sitting could increase the restorative (if implemented) part of your fatigue at double speed. Naturally it has little *practical* meaning, but it should still be there. It's part of role playing.

As for "effects on items", I'd like to separate what we now know as Effects into Magical Effect and Natural Effects (typically potions, to get rid of Alchemy as something dealing with magic, which never made sense to me - herb lore would suit better, and provide natural effects). Holding a Pick Axe of decent quality adds +20 to Mining skill as a natural effect. That sort of thing. It sure isn't magical. And I don't think magic should be able to do absolutely everything either.

IMO, flavour actions or items add a lot. Whether that be a technically useless action like sitting, or a useless item like worthless scraps of paper, it helps to keep the illusion that you're in a living, breathing world, not one geared towards yourself questing towards an endgame.

It should stay and it should have other purposes too. I could sit in a chair for hours without the manager or bartender ever asking if I wanted a drink or read the menu. lol Let them come and serve me.
If adding to the illusion you're living in a real world or it being awesome when Baurus whispered to you about an odd costumer or Haskill wanted to have a chat with you isn't enough already.

restoring fatigue, health, or magicka when sitting down is a great idea. Hope it makes into the game.

A very minor increase in stamina regeneration'll do. After all, that's why people sit. So they don't drain their strength by standing around.

If the AI would be (and surely isn't) good enough, sitting down could also have social aspects. For example, a character might offer the player a seat and perhaps be confused if the player refuses (or take it as a sign that the player is going to leave soon, or even that the player might have something other than talking in mind) - but that's too much to ask for for current-gen games. After all, we are in the generation of making things simple for the sake of it, not making things complex (while retaining playability ofc) for the sake of it, as it should be. Oh well.
