Size, Dialogue and the games limits?

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 7:14 am

Any else get the feeling that this FO won't be as big in terms of the size of the world, amount of quests you can do which will mean you'll complete the story too quickly? I get the feeling this is the case of me with the new dialogue because of the voice, would Bethesda put all this time into giving the same amount of dialogue to the NPC's for side quests along with the main story line or would the dialougue amount stay the same just with the different system(I am not against the way the system works as I was the first time I seen it) but just doesn't fill me with confidence when it comes to wanting an RPG when I have played the other FO's in the past and TES games.. I am not too sure. This is why I don't feel as excited as I thought.

Who ele feels the same on these points?

They have 13,000 lines of dialogue for the main character... This is very much. I think more than in New Vegas. So I wouldn't worry about this,

I think it depends on whether 13,000 lines of dialogue is a lot compared to previous games.

Size of the world doesn't matter to me as much as number of quests and things to do.

FO3 I felt like there were not that many quests to do despite it being a large and interesting world.

FNV felt smaller in terms of area, but I felt like there was much more for my character to do. I could miss out doing a mission and not feel shortchanged.

Hopefully they go for the latter. I have a feeling the dialogue may be a bit more linear in this game so may be a far few missions.

FO4 will definitely be bigger due to Current Gen only. I'm not concerned at all about Memory.

There were 65,000 lines of written dialogue in New Vegas I believe.

Is that total lines for everyone or just the main character?

That was in total including NPCs and all. Unsure how many lines of dialogue in NV were the player.

Total. Since almost every line was a response to a play line, that means there would have been close to 120,000 lines if the player had been voiced.

It will be bigger they said it themselves.

And no i am not sceptical i am happy.

Some people just started a scandal about the things that were missing.

But we just saw 10 minutes of F4 and like 40-50 percent (maybe even less) of the gameplay.

So i think its to early to judge.

I am not concerned about map size. It's pretty self-explanatory that the map itself will be a lot larger than Fallout 3 or New Vegas solely because it's on current generation ONLY. If not, then it's definitely a wasted opportunity.

There were roughly 500 characters in FO:NV sharing 65000 lines of of dialogue. The Pc in FO4 has 13000 lines of Dialogue that is 20% of the total for NV. When one character has 20% of the total lines of Dialogue that is huge. I think we can reasonably assume that the main character will have less than 20% of the total dialogue budget in FO4, which means there will be even more content than NV. I think it is safe to say that the voiced protagonist did not limit the writing in FO4. DA:I and the Witcher 3 both shown that you can take strong narrative and merge it with open world design. This seems the natural progression for Bethesda as they have already mastered open world game play, so why not take on strong narrative story telling?

What counts as a line of dialogue? Sometimes NPCS would give you a short paragraph in response in New Vegas. Talking to Mr. House for example resulted in him talking way more than the Courier.

Wait... 'lines of written dialogue'. I was under the impression, that this includes the player speak too.

And no. You are wrong. 1 Player sentence =/= 1 NPC sentence. Mostly the NPCs make more sentences than the player. If you choose a option the NPC says more than one line... right?

More than once sentence, but that's still one line.

Less than 10% of NPC lines in previous Fallout games weren't responses to a player line. 13,000 player lines means only slightly more NPC lines than that.

Wow... If this is true then I think I do have a problem with a voiced protag.

More dialogue than in NV? Not gonna happen. Especially not from your character.

This is bethesda we're talking about. And voiced protag, which always cuts down dialogue. Has in games before, will in future games.

No. Most of the NPCs response in more than one line. Most of them have at least two lines as response. And many even have more.

Those multi-sentence responses count as single lines.

I'm going based on the fact that multi-sentence responses are still a single audio file.

But many responses are multible audio files... I mean... everytime the dialogue box changes to another text makes it a new line... right?

I have faith that they are expanding on the world rather than constricting it, and I think that was an issue Todd eluded to at E3 and the Xbox conference. I think it's a safe to think we have only gotten the proverbial look at the ankle under the dress.

Nope, some recorded lines just don't fit in single dialogue boxes.

Much of the "world" and quests in FO3, didn't have any dialogue. And amount of dialogue had little to do with the size of the world or the length of a quest. An NPC can give you a quest to go explore Pre-War Ruin B, which might involve a trek across half the map, going through half a dozen buildings, fighting multitudes of mutant beasts & raiders, and then all the way back across the map to return to that NPC. And the only dialogue was with that one guy.

So, no - the fact that the main character is voiced doesn't say anything to me about the size of the world or the number/length of quests. All it tells me is that the game's going to take up a bunch more harddrive space, for the additional audio files.
