Skiing.

When it comes to Skyrim, I will be sorely annoyed if you get around the terrain like in Oblivion. Jumping/Running up a 70% angle hill, running downhill, swimming in water as fast as you run etc. and other assorted nonsense.

Skis are a great tool and immersive. The picture is a famous painting of Birkebeinar. They were rebels to the throne of Norway at the end of the Viking era, during the civil war of Norway (which would eerily coincide with the lore and timeline of Skyrim).

My point is, that not having skis in Skyrim would make little sense, being an ancient tool used in the real-life "mirror" of Nord culture. A referencing faction to these guys would also be amazing, although I suspect something like that is already in - skis or not.

Well, I have a feeling you're going to be sorely annoyed. I don't know why, but I very seriously doubt that skis will make an appearance in Skyrim.

I thought this was a joke but it seems relevant, yet highly unlikely. Bethesda has been reading up A LOT on their viking culture though. On those behind the scenes videos, they had those DK books on vikings, and mythology and culture books lining their bookshelves.

Probably the most well-known quote and most repeated fact about Norwegians is that "We are born with skis on our legs" hehehe. Make of that what you will, I think skis are essential.

Regardless, I think all of Scandinavia will buy Skyrim LOL.

HAHAHA! Epic skiing chase mission! You're going after a bandit leader who just escaped down the mountain and while you're chasing him his men come after you in toboggans shooting arrows at you.

Skyrim should also have hockey teams. But they hould be much more gruesome than modern hockey, something like an Arena on ice.

As Dovahkiin the snow simply melts before you as you walk. Skis become redundant.

Only if we can also go skiing down the Throat of the World and have the Sky-Games also.

Sure. it fits within Nordic culture. But what function would it serve as a gameplay mechanic?

Doesn't feel right for Skyrim.

Please, elucidate.

We're not talking about carbon fiber and spandex. The first skis used were made out of bones, which is in fact reflected in the name "birkebeiner." Bein is a Germanic word for bone. That's pretty "viking" to me.

Hunters used them to chase animals in snowy areas. Maybe if we were realistically slowed in deep snow, it wouldn't seem like such a bad idea. I actually wouldn't be surprised if we were, the same thing happens in water in previous games, and since they keep bragging about how their snow is not just a texture, I'd be disappointed if it was still just for looks.

Skis would be great. I don't see them doing it, but if they can then it would be great!

Immersive? I think it would be pretty ridiculous. I can't imagine how I'd manage to look like a badass barbarian tiptoeing around with skis on.

It would make perfect sense for skis not to be in Skyrim. Just because they're in real life doesn't mean they have to be in a video game, and there's much more to Nord culture and much more to every race's culture than just being an exact mirror of real-life cultures. Obvious inspiration here and there, but they are all unique in their own right.

I don't want skis or skiing.

I suppose the part of nords that has something to do with Skandinavia, is based in legends and stereotypes more than in reality. So, I would be surprised if this make an appearance.

I know. But everything that is viking in our world doesn't necessarily fit in Skyrim. Skyrim is not Scandinavia, even though it obviously has a lot of similarities.
I just feel that it doesn't fit. I got no better explanation than that. It doesn't feel right for the world of Skyrim or TES. It just doesn't.

It should be impossible to traverse thick snow in heavy boots efficiently. IRL in such a situation with that kind of gear on you'd be moving at a quarter of your normal speed, not counting the hundreds of times you'd get stuck in deep snow.

So to whoever said skis would serve no purpose... What? It's transportation!

And you can't swim in heavy armor, but there are things in RL that could damage gameplay.

Actually, it is possible to swim in heavy armor. Common misconception.
