Skill based or Level based

Post » Fri May 29, 2009 10:55 pm

Has there been anything announced on the game being level based or skill based?

If so, what are your thoughts? I prefer a skill based system like SWG.

I have not found anything on this, but I think a mix of them is best. Like previous fallout games. Levels gets you some things and skills get you somethings.

Haven't tested SWG, is it like EVE or more like.. hmm, mound and blade? anyway if its any of those to, yes for skill based.

Level based are always so restricted, you reach top level and then you lose most reasons to keep on playing (at least i feel that way :P no fun running around killing stuff when you won't get any better) Image

I play mount and blade, good game. I like that reference, because their system of level and skill works.

First off they have a normal lvl system, you level up, put in attribute points (strength, intelligence, agility etc) and then you get some points to put in skills (ironflesh, powerstrike, wound management, trade, block etc) then lastly you get to spend some points in proficiencies (one handed weapon, two handed weapon, bow, throwing etc).

And leveling after a while got reaaaally hard.. i mean extremely hard at a point >,< BUT that only affects skills and attributes, proficiencies on the other hand can always be upgraded by just using a weapon, like if you use a one handed sword much you will get more points with it automatically.

also, you get 1 skill point for every attribute point you pick, you get 2 attribute points/lvl i think, but you get 2 skill points if you choose intelligence... or was it charisma. All attributes affects you differently, like more dmg/hp/ and if I remember correctly the skill points are bound to the attribute, so if you want to have lvl 4 riding you need lvl12 agility (1/3 of the attribute).

Thats like.. about it i think :P Image

Dungeon Seige was purely skill based at leveling.

The more you used certain items (skills) the better they got and the more difficult to improve the other nonrelated skills and stats.

Items gave you bonus (magic/D&D like game) to your stats, skills and such.

Plus you had to skills and stats at a certain level before you could use some of the items.

I think if they stick with what they have done before and use that as the ground work they will do great.

I really liked what Oblivion had, it was a mix of the both. You raised your major skills to level up and assign your attributes. And I also liked the skill based design of Ultima Online. I can't wait to see what gamesas brings to the table here.

Bring it on!!!! haha

Skill based systems are much better for numerous reasons. It gives the player more options down the line and even early game. Level based systems are boring after you max out. There is no more character progression until you get an expansion. Sure you can get different gear and do quests, but in a skill based system, if you are bored you can literally change your class if you want to re-grind or mix and match skills.

I believe in sandbox games and skill based since it is what brings the real fun to the game.

This, with level based you'll feel restricted. If anything Fallout could follow what EvE been doing atm.

I prefer skill-based, so long as many different paths are actually viable. I'm thinking of a game like Fallen Earth, which is skill-based, but somewhat limited. I'd like to see Fallout Online have a lot of the same kind of builds being viable as we saw in the single player games (stealth, charisma, heavy weapons, sniper, melee, etc.).

I prefere skill based, but more (not totaly) like the rpg shadowrun.

You get points for your done Quests and you can invest them in your skill's or attribut's.
But i think this realy hard for programm. Because if you take beginner quest with advaned equipment and skills you should get less points. You need for that a valuation of skill and equip what is more difficult as only a charakter level.
At second you have a problem with the items. For normal you should become only bether items in area's where you can only move with a better skills and a min. level equip for this area.

In the end it will not be fallout. So i think like the old Fallout 1 & 2 Games, a mix. Major Skill, second the charakter lvl for the choice of benifits and rising of attributs Excuse me, if my english is not so well like it should be. I am German and not so well trained in english

I was thinking the same thing. I wonder if they are still going to release Earthrise or not.

Well if they do something like Fallen earth(hope not). I really really....really hope they add some way of redoing your points. My first character in that game I had no idea what I was doing. I truly think that the system in the other Fallout games would work. Some changed here and there to wouldn't hurt. Mostly because items didn't have required levels in Fallout games. So maybe they are going to have no level restricted gear? Can't wait to see what crazy perks they add.

hope they do, looks promising. i just dont like the post apocalyptic setting that earthrise has.

again im pulling an earthrise example... :p if i understood the forum right, gear gives abilities and there was a huge discussion about this because the hotbar would be really messed up cause of gear swaps. In gaming terms... Life's a die, then you bich.

Earthrise and Fallout Online share the same engine, but not the same game design.

The previous Fallout games used variations of the SPECIAL system created for the original Fallout. SPECIAL has skills _and_ levels. And perks and traits and other stats.

It is not the same thing. The Whitcher is based on the NWN engine, but they differs a lot.
If V13 will use SPECIAL - i'll be happy. Mostly, I love skill based system, but SPECIAL is something... special ;) Excuse my bad English... I am a Russian bear, it's hard to type with claws.
