No skill checks in Fallout 4?

Post » Mon Jan 18, 2016 7:50 pm

Where are all of the important skill checks that were prominent in Fallout 3/NV? I understand that Bethesda made the terrible decision of replacing the skills with inferior perks that are completely dull, and boring, but removing skill checks (Or would-be "Attribute checks" in Fallout 4) was an equally bad decision. How could Bethesda remove yet ANOTHER feature of the Fallout series? Is Fallout 4 not simplified to a level close enough to the mobile gamer's preference yet?

We have this new system of perks that limit your role playing abilities by forcing you to increment based on a level cap (You can't be a thief, because you also have to be an explosives expert, a crack shot, and a smooth talker). The perks for increasing your damage also need to be upgraded in sets of 20% (Limited by your level), which is about the most boring, over-used method of upgrading in gaming history.

On top of that, the map doesn't look like a wasteland (Its small, and the starting zone filled with nothing but raiders (yet it takes up 1/4th of the map), blah), its uninspired, and there are virtually no caves or special areas to explore that were present New Vegas, and Fallout 3 (Somewhat).

ON TOP OF THAT, once again Bethesda has drowned out a massive portion of the map in water, of which there are ABSOLUTELY NO SECRETS, loot, or unique enemies. Just a bunch of crashed ships, and floating rafts that serve absolutely no purpose and are there purely for aesthetic reasons.

So you would think with the level of simplicity that Fallout 4 brings, you could at least expect them to nail the story, add some really great dialogue, and allow you to make very important choices in your speech? Right?... No?... Well do they at least let your "Unique" character influence someone based on my knowledge of guns, science, or survival skills that would be relevant in the said situation? No? What kind of an RPG is this? I'm really burned on Fallout 4, I thought that Bethesda would have made another legendary game such as Fallout 3, but to be honest I wish they would have just left this one up to Obsidian, they did a better job on NV than this, even with the thousands of bugs and glitches that game had, I still had more fun playing it. more than 4,000 hours on Fallout 3 + NV, and still Fallout 4 sits there with just under 100 hours played... I had to force myself to play that long, the game is truly boring, and it doesn't hold any kind of interest.

I'll defend the character system to death, and I do think you only made a second thread just to be a butt, but yeah it's pretty lame that there aren't any checks in dialog for other attributes, or perks.

How about the speech dialogue staying the same color no matter how high your charisma is? I've watched so many streamers and YouTubers with high charisma pass up on the red dialogue because they think the red is dynamic and still meant impossible.

I'll actually never take ladykiller again, considering it does strictly nothing that can't be done without it.

It all comes down to the fact that Fallout 4 isn't really an RPG. It's more of an action/adventure game. Or an FPS with RPG elements.

Ooh repeat violations. You must really think people actually want to hear this (they don't).

You have speech checks which depend on your charisma. which also means you have to change the title from "No skill checks" to "why not more skill checks"

During a quest it checks if you have enough Intelligence so you can fix some things without parts. Other than that it's just been Charisma checks as far as I've seen.

No need for skill checks really. There's a lock to pick around every corner which is much more fun!

How does that make any sense? There were locks to pick around every corner in Fallout 3/NV. It still doesn't take away from the fact that you NEED skill checks in a Fallout game.

If you wanna play fallout 3, go play fallout 3. No one was demanding a fallout 3 clone. It's not enough to just say "omg this is different." Of course it is. It's fallout 4.
