Skill maximum ?

In the Fallout world what level would you consider a maximum that one could raise their skill levels to?

It was not uncommon for me to have at least one skill at 120% before end game, along with several skills at 90%.

But in a MMO, were there is no true end game, would (Should) it be possible to have a skill level of 200%.

What is the benefit of having such high skill level?

Remember that it costs more points to receive 1 point once your skill is at 100%.

On another thread (Survivalism), it was brought up that it might be interesting to have a 1 time choice perk (from several choices) that a player could pick once they reached max skill level (100%).

What if instead, you would get a perk choice at 120%, then again another at 150% and then again at 190%.

Also, in my mind, the need for having such high skill level would be if you are going against other players whom might also have a high skill level.

Though I have other thoughts on this, it's your turn. :)

I think a maximum character level of 20, with very slow progress and skills maxed at 100 per cent with only a small total available would be best if you want to avoid the gameplay turning into a constant grind and encourage character specialisation and co-operation.

Skills need to have a high max, or even no max. The "max" should be determined more by deminishing returns. Like in FO2, it would cost more skill points the farther from 100 you raised a skill. On top of that, most of the skills recieved little or no benefit after raising them past 100 and the highest skill requirement for a perk is 80.

There being some arbitrary mathematical mas really doesn't matter. As Acrimitis said, I think it's more about a cost/benefit curve.

OK, well we all agree that the higher the skill desired the more it cost in points to improve it.

But what about once you reach a certain level in skill that you can gain a single choice from 3 options.

Using what was mentioned on the Survival Thread as an example

Lets say that the max skill level is 300%

Once you reach 120% in Doctor skill, you would be able to get one of the following choices;
General Doctor: You can now heal just about anything and any body. You increase the amount that you heal on each attempt by your Intelligence
Surgeon: Compound broken bone, reattaching limbs, childs play. Upon successful skill test, you can take a permament critical wound and make it a regular critical wound (which can now be attempted to be healed to a non-critical wound)
He's dead Jim: If you cut here, or pinch there, you can cause a great amount of pain. You are so good at the anatomy of bipeds, that you have a better chance of inflicting critical wounds on others. +15% chance of critical wound upon successful strike (or shot).

Once you reach 200% in Doctor skill, you would be able to choose one out of 3 options (perks)

Once you reach 300% in Doctor skill, the same.

Actually this sounds like a great idea, just a couple points i'd like to go over

1. This would make character specialization so much better an unique because you'd be able to have several perks from your skills and the perks combined with your other skill perks makes so many unique characters

2. the second point i'd like to make is that i believe that once you get to a certain point in several perks for example let's say the best perk in the game you can get from a skill point of view (skill meaning the perks suggested) the perk will be for this example i'll just call it ninja thief. Now to briefly explain it, if your lockpick AND steal AND sneak are 300% then you get to take this perk, and the effects would be that whenever you are sneaking and you try to lockpick a door or try to steal from someone that you automatically win the skill check. Now im making this perk randomly im using this as an example. If you were to make certain perks that are good with greater requirements you would allow so much character customization and it would be worth it to put your time into getting such and such skill to this much %.

3. It provides a much greater incentive as a player to try and get 300% on a skill specifically because you know you get a perk without needing to level up or anything like that. You get a free perk from doing such hard work, or you could always give a certain in-game item for example let's say you max out doctor you would get a doctor bag that has extra utensils and therefore gives better healing than let's say a regular doctor's bag.

4. Another thing that can also be added with these perks would be specialization whether it be a doctor who specializes in stimpaks (meaning you gain more health from using stimpaks) where as a doctor who specializes in doctor's bags gains more health to limbs that have been damaged, ect.
