Skill & Perk Line-Up [Speculation]

Post » Sat Nov 28, 2015 12:30 pm

Here's a new article from http://www.digitalspy.com/gaming/feature/a662298/expect-lots-of-guns-exploding-heads-and-perks-to-play-with-in-fallout-4.html#~pkHScECjCpKLUd Edit: Be warned- Quite a few new spoilers.

Quickly describes perks: Each of the game's seven attributes (SPECIAL) have ten perks each, giving a total of 70 to unlock and use. Since there are also multiple levels of each perk you will have a total of 275 to choose from.

Just been to the Gamescom and the following data should be interesting:

1. Perk ranks are apparently not streamlined (or at least less than you'd expect). Bloody Mess has four ranks, other perks have three or five.

2. The first perk of each and every SPECIAL is the perk that allows us to raise that SPECIAL stat by one point. The level 1 perk is always the training perk, leaving us with 9 other perks per stat that do different stuff.

Toughness is definitely back, I think it had either four or five ranks.

Bloody Mess showed no rank information besides gorier deaths (not even dmg modification as far as I remember).

The perks that you don't meet the requirements for are depicted through hollow perk-icon silhouettes.

Stimpaks in Fallout 4 no longer heal instantly. Once you apply it, you get to see how much it'll heal and that particular body of to be regained health loads up.

Stimpaks are injected via a quick animation.

Apparently (at least some) ammunition has weight in Fallout 4. The SPECIAL advertisemant shows how a strong character can pick up more items, one of which is a mini-nuke, suggesting that mini-nukes have weight. The pc picked some nukes up later, but I was too entranced with the spectacle to register anything about weight unfortunately.

Again, thanks for sharing. Just 3 quick questions:

1. With toughness and bloody mess, did you see these directly on the perk chart, or were they shown in the forties style 'short clip'?

2. Also, where was the rank information displayed?

3. Finally, with regards to your earlier comment of 3 or 5 ranks, was this explained or just shown?

1. Directly on the Perk Chart. The player was selecting Bloody Mess and then the Vault-Boy did it's animation.

2. I can't remember any rank information.

3. It was just shown. The ranks are depicted through stars, much like FFVII's materia.

By the way I don't remember any ranks for the training perks, but I could be wrong.

Awesome, thank you so much for sharing this info! I will make a few changes to the OP, because it seems like the number of ranks for each perk will be a little harder to track with varying numbers until we see the full chart in a video. And as always, I will mention you as providing this brilliant new info. Even though it shakes things up a bit, it also means we're a step closer :goodjob:

That d-spy piece was nice, though I do wonder what they mean in the end bit about saying if you have a 10 in a stat, you can start with a big perk right out of the gate. (crossing fingers this sorta means you do indeed get a few freebies at start like the old tag system, but could very well be they mean once you gain a level.)

What I've always taken this to mean is that if you had say, a 10 in Strength at the start, as soon as you reach your first level up you could take rank 1 of the Power Loader perk (requires 10 Strength) without having to get any of the earlier perks on the list.

Hmmm, makes sense I guess. I assumed Bethesda would include some way to level up your SPECIAL.

Tying the system into perks makes sence, as it forces us to chose between leveling up SPEICAL, or getting a new perk.

This should help balance things out a bit.

They mean that any SPECIAL stat that is a 10 (maxed out) will give you instant access to every available perk in that category. If you only have a 5 in a category you will only have access to half of the perks in that category. This is how I'm reading it anyway.

In light of the perk information, I'm curious if ranks beyond level 1 will have level requirements.

Good question. It seems that each time you level you will be able to either increase the SPECIAL, which will give you access to another perk, or increase the rank of the available perk in that category.

It sounds like it will be a long leveling process. In a good way though. I'll be carefully planning out a leveling strategy. :D

So on the Perk Chart to increase a stat, do you just select the stat on the header column or do you select from row 1?

So chart has 7 columns with 1 header row and 10 rows underneath.

Would you select the upper left hand corner Header row Strength or the one underneath it (row 1 of 10)?

Thanks

I love the work you are doing Liam but i think your prediction for what the perks and their ranks will do is not gonna be nearly as correct as you think.

I've just seen some very detailed images of the perk chart, which makes me suspect they may not be legit. And so I won't post them up until I'm certain they won't get taken down. In the meantime, I can confirm that many of icons I identified were wrong, but I still have a fair idea of what they do, but a great many of them were spot on. Also, I think I've figured out a way that the individual ranks may be distributed between various perks.

Either way, this brings us a step closer to unravelling the whole chart. I'm going to have a word with one of the mods to see what I'm able to put on here, once I start decoding the perks I previously misinterpreted. In the meantime, I would ask that nobody post any of these new images on here at this stage. Any attempts to do so will be requested for removal until we can verify the source as legit

EDIT1: looks like I was right about Acrobatics!

EDIT2: as well as Far Sighted.

Okay, so it looks like the source is completely legit.

Look at http://store.gamesas.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/thumbnail/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/a/r/art-litho-fo-garage-detail02.jpg image of the garage from the special Lithograph Edition available for purchase. Now watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kc4OgTSwuM0&feature=youtu.be&t=1m31s video, in which they appear to have used advanced image processing to enhance the chart. Finally, the chart has been screen captured from the video, as seen http://imgur.com/a/WJG4X.

What this means is that, in spite of how low resolution the previous images of the chart were, I managed to correctly identify a surprising number of icons. But more importantly, because of other research I've been carrying out, once I have re-evaluated and in some cases corrected the perks as we see them in the above links, I will be able to tell you the exact number of ranks for every single one

EDIT: this ties in with the links in the above post.

You select from row 1. Row 1 aka the first column of perks (1 in the respective attribute) is the training perks, which increase that stat by 1 point. The other 9 rows (2-10) are other perks.

The Strength 1 icon for example shows the Vault-Boy lifting (increasing his strength).

Now this makes a bit more sense. The training perk will be the one at the very top row of the chart, which would equate to Intensive Training from previous games. This would leave 10 in each row and not 9.

Would this tie in with what you were told or shown? Because including the stat icons there are 11 rows.

The actual first row at the very top isn't perks at all. They are just the icons representing the stat.

The first perk row (Strength 1, Perception 1, etc.) is the training perks. The other 9 rows do different stuff.

That means if you have 1 in Strength, you will not have access to any Strength perk but the Strength Training perk.

Nope, for example 1st perk in the Endurance row is Toughness, 1st in Agility is a Gunslinger, etc...

The very 1st row where Strength, Endurance, etc... IS the "Intense Training" of this stat along with it's description.

How exactly was this explained? Because the first row includes things such as Unarmed, Lockpick, Barter, and Repair. And so if we select these, we will increase our ability to throw punches, pick locks, get better prices, and repair things. By clicking on the very top row of icons, we would be able to increase that stat by a single point, which would be exactly the same concept as training. This is important because this one fact would completely change how the chart is used. And so is it possible that you may have misunderstood this information?

For the record, the other information you provided about varying numbers of ranks has actually proved to be very useful when identifying what each perk does

EDIT: I agree with the above poster, and I think you may have misinterpreted this.

This isn't how it is. There are 11 rows, technically, but only 10 perk rows. The top row represents SPECIAL, so a 1 in any stat will give access to the first perk down the column.
