Skill reset to Zero upon imprisonment

Post » Sun Oct 09, 2011 3:26 am

I recently stumbled upon some troubling information, which will certainly make me think twice about stealing.

Crime has been altered from Oblivion to represent the fall of the Empire.

Each of the individual 9 major town factions now track their own crime statistics of the player. The player can have a bounty in one of the towns but be unwanted in the others.

When captured the player still has the option of paying a fine, resisting arrest or going to jail:

Resisting arrest is actually a viable option in Skyrim because unlike in Oblivion if the player is successfully able to kill any bystanders to their crime then the bounty is removed. This allows players to commit assault or murder in front of a guard and if they can kill the guard then they may be able to wipe out their bounty.
If players choose to go to jail they are given a lockpick similarly to Oblivion. The lockpicking system is quite similar to that in Fallout 3/New Vegas. This mini-game requires players to angle the lockpick in a particular way and then spin the lock around until it unlocks. If the pin is in the wrong spot then it will wobble and eventually break. If the player breaks the lock they can walk out free.
If the player chooses to wait they now no longer lose several points from their skills. Instead their progress in some skills is set back to zero. Bethesda Softworks has not provided a reason for this.

That last bit should probably be modded out ASAP, but then again you can just type modpcs (skill) (amount) on PC. Scream with rage if you want this changed before launch, it's pretty late in the development cycle.

I think if it's like, half way through ranking up, it will set it back to the start.

Is there any direct source? That sounds highly illogical.

Personally it doesn't bother me all that much though, seeing as I don't usually break the law in TES.

@ patti 345: that sounds alot more logical.

'' Skill reset to Zero upon imprisonment ''

Horrible inaccurate topic title. Skill PROGRESSION resets to zero. So if you have Skill L40 Archery and you're 50% towards L41 than if you go to prison you're back at 0% but you're still at L40.

I like the system, naturally they still have to punish you for your crimes but the way Oblivion did it was too much. Nobody would actually agree to that, instead they would just reload. THe only people who did agree with that did so on purpose to reduce skill level and be able to level further.

That seems very unlikely. Obviously, they've got to mean the progress from your current level in a skill is reset, not the amount of levels of a skill.

Have you actually read the thing?
If the player chooses to wait they now no longer lose several points from their skills. Instead their progress in some skills is set back to zero.

It won't reset your skills, just the progress bar, so if you had to hit one more enemy to level up in one-handed (so you had 99% in that level of the skill), after the prison time, you'll have to start again, resetting that level back to 0%, but your skill level stays.

I agree with this. I really doubt that say, you're level 50 in blade, then you're imprisoned and it's set back to 0. It's probably like Patti said, say if you're level 50 in blade and halfway to 51, you'll be set back to 50 and lose your progress towards 51. It did say 'skill progression' after all, not just the 'skill'

I guess it's to avoid going to jail being considered a desirable thing to lose skill points and regain them for extra levels.

That sounds much better, sorry for getting everyone else's panties in a bunch for assuming "progress" meant the skill level.
