Skipping ESO Dialogue

Post » Tue Feb 18, 2014 11:40 pm

The past three times I've participated in the ESO beta, I found myself always skipping through the in-game dialogue. The problem with this is I don't usually skip through dialogue in most of the games I play; MMORPGs, however, seem to be the exception.

Runescape, SWTOR, GW2 and now ESO I find myself rushing through the dialogue without a care in the world! But single player games such as Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Dark Souls, Farcry 3 and Tomb Raider I am always interested in what characters in the game have to say to me.

This thread, btw, is inspired by a Buzzfeed video that can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3B61M60o5ts

So how do you guys/ladies feel about dialogue in games?

DISCUSS!!

I picked Sometimes, but I don't actually skip dialogue typically. The reason I skipped some is either 1) I didn't want to spoil it, but wanted to get the experience, and/or 2) I had already done that quest and wanted the experience.

I feel the poll would be better if it had a section for whether or not you *plan* to skip dialogue on release, as I 100% do not plan to skip any dialogue on release.

I skipped some dialogue during my second beta play through, I won't when the game launches...

I won't skip once the game goes live. Before that, I'm trying not to get too much spoilers. Also, I could only play one day of beta so far, so I didn't have time to test all the aspects of the game. English is not my first language and I would be terrible for finding grammar mistakes during the beta tests, so I would rather spend my already limited time testing something else (mostly crafting).

I never skip dialogues, not even if the game is not voice acted. I like to savor every story and every bit of lore that I can find.

I skipped most of the beta dialogue and payed barely any heed to what I was doing in the quests to not spoil the actual stories for when the games launches.

That probably failed a bit but it's still better than having to do everything for a second, third, fourth or whatever time.

I won't skip dialogue after launch, on my first character.

This is why I disagreed with getting top quality voice actors and the budget that comes with them.

Look at how many of us "sometimes" skip the dialog or almost always skip, and most of us are Elder Scrolls fans. Yes I know it was beta and we did not want to spoil the story.

The MMO public will skip a lot more. The "pressure" to skip will be high, due to people in groups who have done the content before.

Long conversations do not work in MMOs, ask SWTOR.

I only skipped because I didn't want to spoil everything for launch. Couldn't help but get immersed sometimes and listen though.

I plan to listen to everything when ESO launches.

Through the beta I sometimes skipped through the dialogue and sometimes I didn't. In other games I rarely skip the dialogue but I did in the beta so it could still feel 'new' playing through parts I played in the beta and not skipping dialogue at release.

I usually do not skipped voiced dialogue if I listen to it for the first time. When I play with an alt - which I usually have lots of - I often skip parts of the VO.

I though they did pretty good with the ESO dialogues. There's a lot of different voice actors which I liked. I don't like how in say Fallout 3 or New Vegas, it was just the same voice actors/actresses for all the characters.

I voted for 'sometimes' on both polls.

I didn't on first play through, I did on second playthrough. I will probably skip dialogue again on release if I have already done the quest.

I Didn't vote, because even though I skipped every bit of dialogue I did it because I want to save it for release. I plan on listening to all the dialogue once the game goes live.

I don't compare playing beta and playing an owned game in this regard the premise diametrically opposite.

The only dialog I want to skip is:

"You know the old saying? Never a borrower or a lender be?"

Some NPCs (read, your banker) need to be individually squelched.

I skipped it because I was grouped every time in beta. I plan to listen when it goes live. My friend started beta one round before me and I didn't want him to have to wait on me cause I am so slow. I actually got an NPC killed because I wasn't listening.

In beta, was looking for bugs, and I wanted to enjoy the voice dialog later when playing the release - so did skip some voice dialog.

When playing SWTOR, listened to all the voice dialog, the first time. Later on with different toons, skipped through the usual side missions, because already knew what the NPCs were going to say.

I find dialogue to be directly relevant to quests. In Morrowind you never skip dialog because if you miss out on the hints they give you you'll be running around the landscape for an extra 2 hours trying to figure out what on earth the dude had said on that cave with rats.

In Skyrim, I skipped dialogs after the first sentence most of the time when I found out that the dude was just going to say in 6 different ways what he said in the first line. (I really hate not just being able to read the whole thing in one go sometimes...)

In Oblivion... i forgot

In ESO, I listened to the WHOLE dialogs up until after the first few quests on Kenarthi's Roost. After which I figured out all the quests were the same (run to quest marker, interact with what it points , run back) and since it was a beta, I started skipping through every single dialog (more play time, less waste of time on identical format quests) -> this to the point where in one quests you have to sneak into someplace. But you can't actually sneak by even if your not detected. You have to interact with the wine glass marked by the quest marker, and then talk to the guard. -.- "ok I get it. I'll skip everything. I'ts pointless. Might as well NOT know what I'm doing and not get dissapointed with the game like this again....."

To be fair, I do intend on giving dialogs a shot. But if my beta experience gets repeated, there is a high chance of me skipping a LOT of it.

On my first beta character, I listened to everything. On my second beta character, I did skip stuff that I had already seen. On the live game, I doubt I will skip anything unless it's something repeatable that I've done before.

Usually I don't skip dialogue in MMOs or single player but in beta once I knew what I was doing I did but only because I didn't want to spoil the storylines. The only other time I've skipped dialogue (in SWTOR in particular) is if I'm grouped and others want to skip. I'm all for immersion and skipping dialogue for me isn't an option.

Im a guy that read all the diologues in WoW. This voice acting makes everythink alot better. It adds ton of immersion and well its alot easier this way. Reading is nothing near npcs actually talking to you
