SKSE Crashing immediately on startup, Please help!

Post » Tue Oct 07, 2014 2:31 pm

Hi all

I just installed SKSE (well actually this is the third time as the previous times did not work either), it is all installed correctly (to my knowledge) and yet it does not work.

I run the skse loader and I get a black box for half a second and then nothing. I tried running as an administrator and the same. Skyrim works fine when run normally, just skse seems not to want to work. Here is hoping someone on here has had a similar experience and even better, a solution that does not involve reinstalling Skyrim from scratch.

I have copied below the SKSE loader log if that helps.

Please help!!

I would likely delete all the SKSE files and try reinstalling it.

Odd issue. Assuming everything installed in its default locations, I'd have very few ideas about what could cause it.

Random thought:

Can you run the game without skse? If not, then it sounds like a missing master from a mod. Which normally wouldn't error out in the way you describe..

Have you tried deleting *everything* and reinstalling skyrim? Deleting the data folder, deleting the garbage in the my documents.. Scorch earth that puppy and try again.

Yeah, it might be for the best considering how rare that sort of issue is. Just make sure to get *everything*. It'd svck to reinstall things, and find out its the one file you didnt delete that caused the problem.

On the off chance, have you tried verifying data integrity? Sure it will undo any ini tweaks and mess up your cleaned dlcs but.. it'd still be easier then reinstalling everything. (Assuming thats the issue)

Before doing that I would uninstall all mods and revert to http://wiki.step-project.com/Guide:Skyrim_Installation#Reverting_to_the_Vanilla_Baseline

Do a fresh install of SKSE (once again) following Gophers guide. I would also redownload SKSE just in case something got corrupted in the download process (unlikely but it doesn't hurt)

What folder are you putting SKSE in?

Do you have any anti-malware apps running in the background?

Using any mods that require SKSE?

Anything in your SKSE\Plugins folder?

Not at the moment, was testing before installing SkyUI only to find that it did not work.

I do have Frostfall which has additional features for SKSE

The bold, underlined green part might be the problem. I never put the SKSE's (or any script extender) scripts or anything in the data folder.

But to my knowledge the .pex files need to go under skyrim\data\scripts

I never did it, and my game works just fine (outside of some random app load errors once in a blue moon established from too many sudden shutdowns of my computer).

I have not even heard of these .pex files until now. I keep everything in the SKSE folder, on the main page, never putting anything SKSE-related in the general skyrim data folder. I think I tried this once with FO:NV, and the Script Extender for that game would not even work until I moved it to the main new vegas folder (not the data).

I put the main part in just the skyrim folder as per the readme, see below.

Well, if you check the skse_1_07_01.7z archive, it comes with a bunch of scripts (i.e. pex files) that indeed goes into the Data\scripts\ folder.

IT's own, yes. But I do not need to put them in the main skyrim data folder.

Again, I do not put the stuff in the main skyrim data folder and it works just fine.

Any which way, I followed the readme (which is the same as Gopher's video) instructions to the letter and my problem is as stands. I would try it without scripts just to test but my Skyrim installation is currently in the process of reverting to vanilla.

Interesting as OBSE, Morrowind script extender and FOSE all work with no problem.

IF you are taking things out of the SKSE folder, you may need to put everything back. I keep EVERYTHING Script Extender-related in the proper script-extender folder, and it works.

Are you keeping your SKSE and associated files in a separate folder? Where do you keep that folder? I'm trying to use version 1.7.1, what version do you use?

I use the most recent one, I think. It does not matter where I keep the SKSE folder, as long as I keep everything but the launcher itself in the folder (I copy it actually).

Had it outside the data folder, it runs. I put it in the data folder, it runs. As long as you keep it in the SKSE folder, anywhere in the Skyrim folder should allow it to run.

In the SKSE folder you'll find a Data folder, a folder that contains the source code, as well as the SKSE dll the SKSE loader exe and the SKSE steam loader dll. You'll also find some text files.

The dll files, the exe, and the steam loader dll as well as the txt files need to be copied to the skyrim folder (where you find the Skyrim exe).

The data file in the SKSE folder can either be placed into the Skyrim data folder or archived and activated through your preferred choice of mod manager (archiving the skse data folder and activating as a mod is recommended by Gopher).

Did you check your skse.log for clues about what may be causing the crash? If it was generated it would be in your (My Documents)\My Games\Skyrim\SKSE folder
