Skyrim and Two Worlds II

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 1:05 pm

So I just recently rented Two Worlds II for PS3 thinking it might be a good distraction while I wait for Skyrim to arrive. I heard good things, so I figured I would give it a go. Not very impressed. While the game has its fun moments, the serious issues and lack of polish just make me miss my ES games that much more. I thought this topic would be a good place for those of us who have played the game to discuss thoughts about the game, and what ideas they would like to see implemented in Skyrim, and those they want avoided at all costs.

Here is my quick review after playing around 15-20 hours:
Positives:
+The lighting is quite well done
+The music and ambient sounds are decent
+The graphics can look very nice (at times)
+Great variety in enemies (ranging from typical animals to mythological creatures)
+The crafting and spell systems are excellent and quite deep
+Excellent variety in landscapes

Negatives:
-Terrible framerate on PS3 (seriously, like maybe 15-20 FPS a lot of the time)
-For everything that looks great about the graphics, there is something that looks god awful as well.
-Terrible physics. Example: the thrown objects and arrows have no mass. You can watch a baboon throw a rock and follow it in a straight line as it travels into the stratosphere. Same with arrows. They move in slow motion in a perfectly straight line, with no drop from gravity.
-Terrible voice acting. I know everyone says they were going for a cheesy b-movie style, but it seriously kills the immersion. The main character talks in grunts like a constipated Christian Bale batman, and the rest of the characters sound like they were voiced by a (bad) high school drama team.
-Character creation (or lack thereof) Seriously, one face with a few different skin tones and textures and ONE hairstyle? C'mon!
-Animation and speed of movement is off. Makes the game feel clunky, and combat difficult.
-Glitches. Nothing game killing thus far, but the game always cuts off the last word or two from my PC, and other weird glitches like losing my horse.
-Blur. LOD blur is ok, but WAY overdone, The motion blur while rotating is nauseating.

Overall score: (6.5) I am trying to force myself to play through it, but I just miss the beautiful, polished worlds of the ES games. The one thing I really liked though is the crafting system. Being able to break down components into core materials, and use them to craft and modify current weapons is really cool. The ability to change the color of everything with dyes and paints is really cool as well. I guess that is the one thing I wouldn't mind seeing added to Skyrim.

What are your thoughts? What did you think of TW2, and are there any redeeming qualities you would like to see in Skyrim?

What are you talking about, that game is 100% Polish

http://www.gameinformer.com/games/two_worlds_ii/b/pc/archive/2011/01/25/review.aspx has a pretty good review on it, and I kinda agree with them. It's definitely a "b-movie game"... it has serious flaws, but it still manages to pull you in. I'd say it's what Gothic was to Morrowind back then - some underground project that's surprisingly good, but simply goes in another direction and is therefore not really suited for comparison.

The magic system is pretty awesome, though. From the information we have right now, it doesn't seem like anything like that will make it into Skyrim tough.

edit: By the way, the voice acting in German is generally praised very much. You simply can't compare the voice acting of an English game to one that was made in a foreign language, because for the latter the results can vary a lot.

I agree with Migatron. DO NOT BUY THAT GAME! Now a little story...

I bought the original Two Worlds game thinking to myself "Oh it reminds me of Oblivion." I put it in on launch day and traded it in in less than two hours later. God awful So I said to myself...worst game purchase ever...I'll never fall for that again.

Flash forward to Tuesday...I have been reading all the positive reviews and how vastly improved Two Worlds 2 is. It is a piece of crap on the PS3!! I once again got it on launch day and boy did I want to kick myself in the face for being tricked two times into buying a piece of garbage ripoff of Elder Scrolls. it is so unpolished. The framerate is unacceptable and the main character's voice work is one of the worst ever. Shame on me for shelling out $120 for Two Worlds 1 and 2. Worst gaming purchases ever. I traded it in by Wedneday.

Now please Bethesda give me ESV and make me forget my lousy judgement on TW2. :-)

LOL at the Polish joke! I don't know, I just have a hard time seeing the charm in the game that everyone is speaking of. It is definitely a step up over the first Two Worlds (couldn't even make it through the demo), but every aspect of the game just feels low budget to me.

To compare it to another low budget game, I would look at something like Mount & Blade. While M&B lacks the depth of TW2, the core aspect of the game (the combat) feels so much more refined and fluid that I forget about the other issues. TW2 really doesn't have any one aspect that is great that makes me forget about the shortcomings. I just see average, poor, or terrible aspects. I will keep pushing on to see if the game grows on me, but for now it is really hard to love. BTW, anyone else notice how much the ambient music sounds like Oblivion? Betheda might have a copyright issue on there hands!

I have been playing it for a while (ordered the UK version since it wasn't out in the US yet), on PC not PS3 and it seems that there are some differences, with the PC version being much better. The character creation is pretty damn robust; on the PC version you can adjust more things than in Oblivion (nose/cheeks/eyes/etc.) with greater precision. It runs very smooth on my system and looks great with AA and AF (I turned down the depth of field and got rid of the motion blur completely it is WAY overdone...another perk with the PC, .ini settings!!)

Anyway, what I would like from TW2 for Skyrim is the wonderful crafting system. It really is easy to use, and very robust. Breaking down weapons into their different parts and reusing the parts to enhance other weapons is GREAT! Love it. Overall it is a fun game, I REALLY wish there was a first person view (I really don't like 3rd person)

negatives........
-forced third person view
-really goofy "dancy" combat moves especially with single handed swords.......who was in charge of animataions, an aerobics instructor?
-[censored] quest arrow.............goddammit :banghead:

positives
-no menu fast travel, you had to walk to teleports and use them
-fun if overpowered magic system
-lots of equipement to choose from and you can either focus on upgrading what you are wearing or buying new stuff but its very hard to do both
-PC graphics with the recommended ini tweaks look very nice. a little heavy on the HDR and some textures are subpar but overall i was impressed.
-polearms

Two Worlds was the worst game I ever played. Not because it wasn't TES. But because it seemed half finished...with TONS of visual glitches. Though the magic in that game was quite fantastic (Visuals).

Two worlds one was the WORST GAME EVER. EVER. Dark Messiah following closely behind. Not even Mass Effect can match up with TES.

wait till the price drops and then try it. they are completely different games. two words 2 is very polished and much better than the first one........it doesnt even feel like the same developer since everything in the game is different than the first one. the magic system is different, upgrading armor is different dialogue is much better. the graphics are very nice and the game runs very smoothly in PC at least. i took a very big risk and laid down some cash to get a european version and it paid off based on one of my friends who i swear is a genetic twin of mine since we have the exact same likes and dislikes in games........and i mean the exact same ones.

I actually finished the original Two Worlds, just to prove to myself that I wouldn't be beaten by a piece of [censored]e, then I come on this forum and there are actually people slagging Skyrim off, saying it will be rubbish. Bizzare.

The original was terrible. Hilarious, though. Not surprised about the sequel.

Well I am shaky about buying it because Two Worlds was the biggest waste of 60 bucks I have ever had. I'll prolly pick it up when it gets really cheap but not a sec earlier hehe.

I don't think Bethesda should really borrow anything from Two Worlds II there's some nice features here and there but not really suited for the elder scrolls universe

From what I have heard, the PC version might not be too bad. If you have a PS3 though, I can't recommend it. Maybe if you are REALLY hard up for an RPG waiting for Skyrim, but I can't help but compare every aspect of the game to Skyrim or even Oblivion, and that just isn't fair to TW2...

i played a demo for the first two worlds, which DID come out AFTER oblivion. It was HORRENDOUS. After that demo, i believe that they do not deserve a second chance.

Two Worlds II might not be as polished as a TES game, but there are some ideas at work there that IMHO can inspire BGS, like a fine crafting system, or the in-game fast travel sites, and the like.

I think TW2 is the best non Beth open world rpg out there. Of course that is not saying that much, as the others are the Gothics and Risen. I don't know if there is anything I would want taken from TW2 for Skyrim, more populated cities If I had to choose, but this is hardly a TW2 invention.

Why even mention such a C-class game on these forums? I played the original in hopes it would be somewhat like Oblivion. It wasn't at all... I'm not going to say anymore about Two Worlds just because... well it was a pathetic attempt at a video game. Two Worlds II is exactly the same way. I don't care what kind of "coating" they put on the game. If BGS were to start borrowing ideas from Two Worlds... I would be concerned. "Drip drip drop..."

I have played both TWI and TWII and I'd say that it is catching up quite well, but still not as polished as a TES game, although it has some nice ideas at work.

I quite like the crafting, spell making and fast travel ideas. Fighting in TWII is good as well, and some other ideas here and there are not bad.

Sure it may look like, there may be a lot of spell customization, and overall it seems cool. However, the story svcks, the voice overs are terrible, the combat (in my opinion) is awkward and not realistic, etc. The only thing I actually liked about the first Two Worlds was the opening song to the game... I just think TES is on a completely different level and will remain that way. European RPGs (Two Worlds, Fable, etc) just aren't at the same level of quality as North American ones imo (Mass Effect, The Elder Scrolls, etc).

Have you seen the fighting and crafting of TW II? Those are nothing like their counterparts in TW I.

I saw in-game footage and the trailer of Two Worlds II. I wasn't impressed. It just looks awkward and how weapons connect looks strange. It actually kind of reminds me of Age of Conan combat. I think Skyrim's combat will easily blow it out of the water. I know the spell system is based off some card slot mechanism now, but I honestly didn't even follow the game that much.
