Is Skyrim art?

Post » Sat Sep 10, 2011 4:26 am

This has come up before. And like before I linked http://www.americanart.si.edu/exhibitions/archive/2012/games/ The Smithsonian American Art Museum thinks video games are art and I definitely agree.

What a dumb comment. Is a painting supposed to be art? No, it is supposed to be a canvas painted in a way that is aesthetically pleasing, representational, or emotionally evocative. Being intended to be an open-world RPG doesn't restrict it from being anything else.

LMAO

your on a roll another naab pwned

:P

actually all human made "stuff" are a form of "art" because basically we were not meant to make chairs, or cups, or cars, or PC, or anything else for that matter.

the difference between us and the beasts is not that we know good from evil, or that we can talk, its because we can make art....

Maybe. I don't know, I haven't played it yet. Judging from the screenshots and trailers, the models/textures and the general atmosphere are aesthetically pleasing, but that doesn't necessarily mean the game itself and as a whole is art, imho
For now, yes I do like the "artistic" assets of skyrim that we've been shown so far, so that's a start :)

When I said "not every book...", I was referring to the manual to my Honda Hybrid. :D (edit: I'm pointing the tricky question. Not all books, pictures or videos are meant to be art. Asking a tricky question like "Are books art?" then giving examples of car manuals is what's going on here.)

As a technical writer by trade, I often see "artistry" when I read a well-written or well-organized manual. Others wouldn't, and so the art isn't there for them. I see art as very subjective, as it relies on our individual aesthetics. Thus, I don't think anything can be entirely excluded from the realm of "art."

Man, we have definitely run out of things to talk about. The forum is now asking philosophical questions.

i'm just getting started.... http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1226939-skyrim-and-the-meaning-of-life/page__p__18491932__fromsearch__1#entry18491932.

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder," it is said. In my opinion, although presented as a game, Skyrim is indeed a combined art from, derived from a variety of recognized artistic venues.

Artists create visual art - Skyrim has all kinds of different artists working on it, from hand-drawn concepts to digitally rendered media.

Writers create art using creative and descriptive words - Skyrim has creative writers working on it.

Animation is a form of art - Skyrim has animations conveying emotion in the form of body language through its various inhabitants.

Acting is an art form - Skyrim has hired over 70 voice actors to convey vocal emotion and diversity through the animated characters on the screen.

Music is an obvious form of art - Skyrim has hours of in-game music composed by the illustrious Jeremy Soule

No too mention, there are in game artists, writers, bards, paintings, books, ancient Dwemer, Daedric and Ayleid artifacts and constructs and Sun Tzu would even go so far as stating that combat and war are art forms playing out with the battlefield as the canvas.

In a nutshell, I'd say Skyrim is art, many times over.

I'm not sure how anyone would think a beautiful world done by artists first then programmed into animation complete with forests, mountains, snow, fog, flowers, animals, moon and stars and even the aurora made into a story written by writers and voiced by talented actors could be anything but art.

Seeing as how everything that one likes is labeled "Art" around here, I'll go and artfully play Magic: The Gathering, Pokemon and Pacman.

Damn right it is ART!!

I mean being a artist of drawing and writing well KINDA I consider this game to be ART, almost all games are, books are art, music/movies/anime is art, games are ART!

That is how I see it, if it can make me show emotion, more than a random TV show can than I declare it art for having that type of power of me!

Alot of anime i watch, i still consider it ART forms because it was drawn than done on a computer, (like video games) and worked on for who knows how long before it became animated, those people but their time and money and heart into making something enjoyable and if it has done that than I consider it art.
