Skyrim Benchmark Tool

Post » Wed Jul 07, 2010 10:08 am

I know there are a lot of poll topics, but this is my first one on the Skyrim boards.

The 2nd question is multiple choice, but not the first.

A lot of games that don't have a playable demo still provide a benchmarking tool for PC users to test. Games that have been provided such a benchmark tool include titles such as Far Cry 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Just Cause 2, STALKER: Call of Pripyat, Final Fantasy: XIV, H.A.W.X., Devil May Cry 4 and Resident Evil 5.

So would you guys want such a benchmark tool for Skyrim and why? [Yes: I'm a benchmark geek.]

How about no, its just plain un-needed. Beth should put time into the game not a bench marker. I didnt vote cause there was no "no" option for me.

Aren't the minimum and recommended specs for that? I voted no, find no use for Bethesda to waste energy on it.

I'd vote no if there were an honest "no" response in that pile of steaming [censored] bias, but there isn't- only loaded options like "no, my PC is a piece of garbage" and "no, I'm a consolehead forever."

Biased poll is biased beyond reason.

My vote: No, it's not necessary and a waste of Bethesda's resources.

I already know that my current PC has a snowball's chance in hell of being able to run Skyrim at a playable FPS. Does no good for me.

No I don't think they should waste time on this, and I strongly agree that this poll is very biased, not only does it have 4 yes and 2, but the 2 no options are pretty much admitting you don't give a damn about PC gaming.

Got more no on the poll for the "no" inclined and an "I don't care" for the "concerned indifferent" amongst us. I don't think the amount of yes or no options matter, the percentages is what counts.

...And what do you mean "I don't give a damn about PC gaming"? Did you think the first two "no"s applied to me? Take a look at my sig and see if either of them apply to me.

Getting warmer...but to vote no you still have to vote "no" to benchmark tool, then vote for what you want included in the benchmark tool you don't even want them to make. Wonder how many of those "Floating camera through forest" votes are real, and how many are "voted for this in order to be allowed to cast my 'no' vote?"

Personally I don't think it would put too much of a damper on Bethesda's resources. In under a week they could just have some of their world designers put together a little worldspace, something akin to the Oblivion E3 demos - just a rough approximation of how many NPCs, trees, and other meshes will be on screen at once. It'd have an accelerated timescale and just cycle through the different weather effects and times of day within a minute or so.

Like I said, my first poll here on the Skyrim board and first in a long time as well. Fixed that as well.

I think too many polls in general im just gonna stop voting and post. Anyways if they did have a bechmark, an over view of scenery while the time changes assuming day and night. A good overview shot of the world in action would be good.

I like you put a lot of effort into actually listening to the critique and correcting the poll, however I fear that it might be too lat enow for the poll to actually show accurate results.

Thank you, 'tis appreciated.

Don't sweat it...give it some time, enough answers will pile in to even most things out. Look at the number of polls that appear and are landslides for one option for 24 hours or so, then even out into a close race later.

I don't think they need to make a new world space. Bethesda could just use the one they have and set up the game's camera to run through a few sections. Repeat the same run with different times of day and weather effects.

There really should be little to making a benchmark tool, the game world is already there, it is just a matter of putting in where the camera is going to run through and FPS counter. It shouldn't need that much in the way of resources to make.

I usually simply use "can you run it". Frankly, I already don't understand 99% of what they tell me. :P

Not sure that it is really needed, but to show willing *votes*.

People who can figure out if a game will run without an "idiot app" to tell me?

Not necessary, just run the game and set up the settings the way you want.

Unnecessary. Just showfps then set up the video settings til you have your desired fps or are at max settings. I don't see the need in a program doing something that you can do easily enough in a few seconds for yourself.

Edit: Oh the OP meant a tool made separately and downloadable to see if the game would run on your pc before you bought the game(I was thinking of the one in GTA4 where it was in with the game) In this case, I don't care either way. I know about where the graphical requirements will stand(Slightly more than Fallout3/New Vegas) So I'll make a pc that can handle that with ease.

It'd be useful, for sure.

I run on a (fairly decent) laptop, and as such, a lot of my hardware isn't technically supported, even though it's roughly anologous to their PC counterparts... even if I have to do a hell of a lot of Googling to determine what those counterparts are.

Being able to accurately determine how well it'd run (the System Requirements Lab website usually coughs up the oh-so useful "maybe it'll run!") would definitely be a selling point for me.

You know wha, you're right. Before I actually didn't see much of a reason, mainly because I have a pretty good feeling what my PC can run and cannot run... But yea some people do have this problem.

A small download that simply checks your specs, and gives a simple yes or no is more than enough.

I too mainly game on my laptop and so how my laptop runs things is more important to me. I rarely bench my desktops, but I always do so with my laptops... I also go through them a lot quicker. For me Skyrim comes about 6 months before the earliest I'd like to replace my current laptop, because I'm trying to time the hardware to mobile Ivory Bridge or maybe even Haswell if possible. If Skyrim runs well on my current laptop, then Skyrim could carry me for that extra year. But if I needed a new laptop to play Skyrim "right", I'd have to start making arrangements now.
