Skyrim: Blood on the Ice, help please!

Post » Thu Dec 15, 2011 12:40 am

Im having many problems with the quest Blood on the Ice in Windhelm, I thought you just had to buy the house to start it, but the guy tells me that i cant. Then i found out that i had to wait for the murder to happen, but it never happens. Should i be able to buy the house first or is that a bug, or do i have to do all my stormcloak quests first, i just cant start the mission and i really want that house, please help me please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! any help will be greatly appreciated.

Spoiler
If you go to the inn and talk to an old lady who says, "Beware the butcher" then a few days later, a murder should take place. You don't have to buy the house to start the quest. It wasn't for sale for me during the Stormcloak quests, so not sure why that's suggested. I too tried to buy it. But with three characters, after talking to the old lady, the murder happens and I solved the crime and then the steward offererd the house for sale.

One huge tip about this quest is -
Spoiler
when you get the option to sell the amulet... DO IT because if you don't you'll never be able to get rid of the useless thing.

Spoiler
If you're a PC user, enter the console, click on the item, and type disable. If you're 360/PS3, then probably stuck with it.

I'm actually having a different problem with this questline. I'm on my Bosmer thief, and have completed the Thieves' Guild special job for Windhelm. After interviewing possible witnesses to the crime, I'm told to report to the guard. Which would be fine except that every time I click on him, or indeed any other guard, he blurts "You! I KNOW you!" ad nauseum.

Anyone else had this problem?

Just wait until night and go to the graveyard. You'll see what I mean.

Stop by the grave yard from time to time, the quest will start when it starts. You can also talk to the guards, stewards etc.

for me to be able to start this quest i had to create a whole new character on a whole new save. When you first escape into skyrim head directly to windhelm but make sure to find 3 different areas to fast travel to.
Once you reach Windhelm walk to the graveyard tthen fast travel to a different location, then fast travel back to windhelm and head to the graveyard repeat this a couple times. Usually by the 2nd or 3rd time the quest activates.
((fast travel example: whiterun, windhelm, solitude, windhelm, Abandon house, windhelm) you get the idea)

One way to force the quest to start without the murder scene is to pickpocket the key to Hjerim from Tova or Torbjorn, and then entering the house. You may have to search the cupboards or such.

Won't always work appearently, but has done so several times for me.

This quest just activates by itself. Some quests do indeed start randomly. Just go to the graveyard at night. That's how I got it. I had done NOTHING previously that even talked about the quest. You could also buy the house in windhelm and discover the stuff in there to start it.

True for radiant quests, but for this quest its not. It is suppose to start after you fast travel to and from windhelm 4 times. the thing is any save prior to patch 1.2 are corrupt and there really isnt anything you can do about it except following my advice from the previous post above.

no it can be any location (except windhelm stables), but everytime you fast travel from windhelm it has to be a completly different location, you cant fast travel to and from windhelm to whiterun four times, that just doesnt work dont ask me why i have no freaking clue

What system are you on? Glitches like this really should be posted in the appropriate tech forum. (On the subject of forum placement, congrats to everyone who put spoiler information in spoiler tags, thanks!)

A few other things. Please do not post multiple threads on the same topic - I've merged your two threads. Also, don't bump a thread unless it has been inactive for at least twenty four hours.
