Skyrim's Books

Post » Tue Jul 19, 2011 6:56 am

What type of books would you like in Skyrim? Would you like them to make more lore-driven books, or more fiction works? What was your favourite book in Oblivion and/or Morrowind? Why? What if they added books that had full-fledged quests or treasure hunts described within their pages? Do you have any original ideas for books?

My favourite book in Oblivion was the Marksman skill book "Vernaccus and Bourlor." It was a great story about a man who would never miss a shot with his bow. One day he was called to take care of a daedra and his arrow missed as the daedra vanished. The man never shot a bow again and died soon after. Years later the daedra was killed in one of his shrines because the door was built from the tree that the stray arrow hit all those years ago and it didn't close and allowed him to be stoned. The man's reputation for never missing then lived on despite it not being remembered.

Also, the new inventory system makes it sound like you read books and notes in the 3D view. Does anyone have any more info on this topic?

Hmmm, well, in Oblivion, my favorite ones were the comically racist guide books and for interesting reads I enjoyed the Magic/history books the most, their depth of detail in the books were very immersive (For me anyway).

My favorite book of all was the constelation book.

Edit: I also collected the rare and valuable books.

For a start, there is 200 years of history to be filled in. Hoping for some more obscure history stuff, like Ice and Chitin, or the Firsthold Revolt, little footnotes.

My favorite book from Morrowind that found its way into Oblivion was "The Ruins of Kemel-Ze". I hope to see that return, and hopefully more books like it.

To elaborate on the quest books, say there are urban legends within the culture of Skyrim about some shield. There are books about it that have been written, but the stories originally came from word-of-mouth. Say in this story they describe where this shield is supposedly hidden in legend and they have riddles that describe the landscape around a secret tomb or cavern where the shield is hidden. Now, if you can decipher the clues you may be able to find this small inconsistency that leads to said place like a secret torch on a castle wall that if pulled, will open a secret door in the wall. These would of course not be actual quests so that the quest markers do not make it too easy.

I don't like the in game fictional stuff and never finish them. The historical books are cool though.

To elaborate on the treasure/quest book idea, say there are urban legends about a magical shield that is hidden somewhere in Skyrim. A book was written about the legend based off the story passed on generation to generation via word-of-mouth. Say in this book are riddles related to where this item is hidden. If the player was able to decipher it properly they would discover a small inconsistency somewhere that would be easily passed by like a torch in a castle basemant that if pulled, reveals a secret tomb with said shield hidden in it. There could even be multiple riddles for multiple puzzles while trying to find it. Of course, these would not be actual quests so as to avoid the quest marker making it too easy. These would actually reward the player for reading and being clever. Some good artifacts that you actually have to work for.

EDIT: Sorry for double post. Chrome said the page didn't load when I posted originally so I figured it didn't work and posted again.

A Blood Meridian-ish story of a party of Dunmer tail-hunters in Argonia would be pretty cool.

Yeah, I haven't read many books. The ones I have though are amazing. So much detail into an area that isn't necessarily important to the game's plot or mechanics.

I'm collaborating with a few folks to make a Skyrim Lore Book Mod that will add 20-30 new books, letters, journals, etc. to Skyrim, all of which will be selected from submissions written by forum members

There are already some excellent pieces posted on the thread HERE: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1204568-wip-fan-created-in-game-books-mod/

So far, some of my favorites from previous TES games are:

  • The Lusty Argonian Maid
  • The Real Barenziah
  • A Game At Dinner
  • The Black Arrow vol. 1 and vol. 2
  • The Wolf Queen vols 1 - 8
  • Immortal Blood
  • The Argonian Account vols 1-2
