Skyrim: Bringing people together

Post » Sat Feb 08, 2014 5:36 am

So I'm standing here in my office a while ago and a new customer comes in to go over some prints for a job. I had these forums up on my computer and was reading them right before he got here. As we are standing at the print table he looks over at my monitor and gets this look on his face. "Um, is that the guy from Skyrim in the background of that website?" he asks. I lol and say "yea, it's the Bethesda Skyrim forums, you play?" He starts laughing and says that he loves TES and has Daggerfall on his work PC (I lolled because I do too) but he had never been to the forums. I show him around and then introduce him to the workshop and Nexus. He had never heard about modding the games until now, LOL!

Needless to say we spent a half an hour talking TES and about ten minutes going over the prints..and I'm going to believe that I got the job thanks to Skyrim. (I probably had the job to begin with but that's my story and I'm sticking to it)

I did see a guy at a gas station this past summer with the skyrim dragon symbol tattooed on the back of his neck but didn't say anything.

Anyone else have any similar experiences?

Heh, nah, I usually try to close down the forums before anyone notices at work. Somehow I don't think my co-workers are into Skyrim, sadly.

That's pretty nice. I haven't had anyone comment to me about the forums. Or at school. One day perhaps.

Thankfully no, no one has ever tried to converse with me about my hobbies. And I'd like it to stay that way.

A guy at work had the Imperial Dragon shirt and I said to him "Hey cool shirt man". I was dressed really girly so I think he just assumed I was hitting on him and not truly a fan of the game myself. He just got really nervous and walked away. I was really hoping to strike up a conversation about the game!
Otherwise, I rarely meet any one who shares my passion with gaming, even if I'm sporting one of my gaming tees.

I really would have never thought I would be talking to anyone about this game other than here, especially at work. Multiply that by the nature of my business and the people I interact with daily and the thought really never occurred to me. I was quite surprised that this guy was also a gamer. He's probably in his 50's, owns a glazing company and doesn't fit the stereotypical gamer at all (at least to me). Of course I probably don't fit that bill either to other people.

Congratulations. Everybody likes games, but not usually discussed about apart from on the forums. But seeing the game on your works computer brought the subject up and got a sale. Otherwise I wouldn't want to discuss it, I might get concerned as well, if that what everybody was talking about to me, away from here.

Stereotype gamers, all types really, when they have the time. It's a relief from high-pressure concentrative work just to open and engage in a shoot-em-up game, blast away and kill something, very theraqeutic……….. Tell that to your boss when he catches you.

Cool story OP, I've spoken in passing to a Skyrim fan and a couple guys in the midnight release line (I was too geeked to wait ha) but that was it.

Did grandma ask about the forums yesterday? ha it would be hilarious if she walked back in on you searching for "Robbie Coltrane shirtless" :P

Never had anything like that happen. My wife is the only one that knows that I talk on here.

Nice thread by the way.

She didn't actually walk in, I was just trying to be funny. :P Unfortunately my family HAVE walked in on me 'exploring' other sites. I don't know how many computers I've been through... Lost count.

I like discussing Skyrim with my family/close friends, but I can't say I'd be thrilled about a stranger approaching me about a piece of clothing I was wearing.

Closest thing I got was that Skyrim was a good movie but felt sad when M died at the end.

Think it would be fun if we all met at a Skyrim convention or something.

I heard a few students a while back trying to decide if they should get it, and I told them "Hell yes!" just kind of out of impulse. Funny thing is, instead of saying "Who the [censored] are you?" They said "Really? Why?" And I told them about it's incredible wonders and modding and they were all "Dude, I've got to go buy it right now!!!" True story
