and do I need xbox live to download firmwares and system updates?

You will need to be connected to the internet: Xbox live is the only thing you can use on the 360 to link up to updates and firmware...why would you ask, it's free anyway?

Yes, XBL is needed to D/L sytem Updates for the 360 itslef and also needed to D/L patches for games but you don't need to pay for membership for theese (Just in case you didn't know XBL is split into two memberships: Silver - is free you can get updates and patches and some DLC: Gold - needs to be paid for £40 a year in uk dont know how that works out anywhere else and you get all the features of silver and you can play games online and get any DLC released on the marketplace), It's also Neccesarry (Lolwut sp?)if you want to get DLC (Download Content) for your games in which case you definantley need bigger than a 4gb. The Xbox 360 Slims are A lot more reliable just make sure to blow out (thats what she said :hubbahubba:) vents every now and then and you should be fine with one, but you most definantley want at least a 60GB or 120GB hardrive

TBH I don't know why M$ brought out the 4GB, its usless lol.

 Have you not be playing games for 3 years? I mean, if you've been playing on a PS3 or a PC why not just get it for one of those?

yes the slim models do not red ring or so they say. and I have yet to have any problems.

If you get a slim, treat the discs super-careufully. My friend has a slim and his Gears 3 disc got a minor scratch (I looked for myself) and would freeze in the slim, but it worked fine one his 4 year old regular one. He's had problems with freezing with other games too. Not trying to deter you man, just trying to give you some perspective from my experiences.

bought my 250gb slim in february. not one problem so far. very quiet and the large vents on top keep the heat flowing out. i suggest buying the 250gb over the 4gb especially if you see yurself ever installing ANY game to your HD. the 4gb is imo, quite redundant. the 4gb seems like something you buy for a casual gamer who doesnt care about fast loading times and jus wants to play cod for a couple hours then leave.

You know, Microsoft fixes the red ring for you for FREE. You just have to send it to them (which is not free, especially if you want to put an insurance to your package in case it gets lost in the mail).

And the 4GB Xbox is a BAD idea.

Skyrim is a Single disk game (due to its dynamic texture things and such being much more compressible?) I seen it from many places, I can't give links but I'm sure someone else can.

Skyrim is a single disk game due to beth wanting it to be one disk for all platforms vs multiple for 360 and one for PS3.

360 disks have been freed up to fit more on it then it could when Oblivion released I believe the DRM was taken off and Beth has optimized their textures so they can fit more on the disk but if 360 had standard blu ray disks their would be more content in game.

4GB Slim Sale + 250GB Slim HDD trumps your comments :D <3 Slickdeals

That being said...OP, you realllllly should just use that 360 budget money and buy yourself a GPU upgrade and play it on the PC. We have mods
