Skyrim contains the entire land mass of Tamriel

Post » Sat Dec 10, 2011 12:35 pm

Not sure if this belongs here or in mods:

I didn’t know if this was posted yet on tumblr, so I thought I’d do it. The landmass of almost all of the provinces in Tamriel, has been put into Skyrim. All which are inaccessible(without console commands) and which serve absolutely no purpose in the game. Why are they there? I personally don’t know. But take a look at the effort Bethesta put into these seemingly pointless landmasses.

There's a gate into Morrowind apparently:

And if you use noclip to go through it and go far enough here's Vvardenfell:

Cyrodill is there as well, here's an overhead compared to a map from Oblivion:

Full blog post is http://ppsh-41.tumblr.com/post/13145143504/entire-tamriel-landmass-built-into-skyrim. The guy hasn't fully explored it yet and as a PS3 player I can't, but I figured someone here might want to.

I doubt it has the whole land in it, they only add a bit of terrain past the border so you can see more of the landscape from a distance, just like how you could see skyrim from oblivion, theres no models or people or anything, only terrain.

I don't get it. Does it mean we can access the Imperial City, for example, via the console?

But these 'provinces' are technically smaller than their official whole game counterparts. Skyrim's Imperial Isle, for example, is tiny compared to the real thing in Oblivion.

They really aren't. They're to scale with the size of skyrim.

He explains it in the video, he's moving at several times the normal speed, and he's really high up, so everything appears a lot smaller.

It must be photoshoped :)
Because Vvardefell is no more as it was destroyed.

4E 22 — Red Mountain erupts; Vvardenfell is destroyed.
In Vivec's absence, the Ministry of Truth becomes unstable. Vuhon creates an Ingenium that uses at first dozens of dying souls, then a small number of living ones to stabilize the rock. The soul of Sul's wife Ilzheven was among them. In a fight to free her, the Ingenium is destroyed and the rock crashes into the city of Vivec with all the energy it originally had. The impact causes Red Mountain to erupt and destroys the entire island of Vvardenfell, as well as causing massive destruction to the rest of the province.

My best bet? Created in case Bethesda chose to do some Skyrim DLC, in which the user will be required to go into parts of the other provinces. The whole of said provinces wouldn't be explorable, only certain locations within, with the rest tethered off in some fashion. But the landscape would be there as an authentic backdrop, while you're walking around the parts you can.

Let's be fair DLC is all the rage these days. Damned proftable for companies too. Oblivion had DLC, Skyrim will amost certainly have something down the line.

He seems to think they might be there as a base for modders to build on? Is anyone trying this?

I was wondering if there's a noclip type command for the map? As it's just an arial view of the main game could you not pull back out/further to see the whole available landmass?

Hopefully it's for the dlc. But I suspect it was used to give Skyrim scale. It having the entire landmass ensures that you're not making Skyrim the size of Tamriel.

I know. I wasn′t serious :)

Anyway. I find this pretty amazing.
So maybe, hopefully this means a lot larger addons are planned.
I hate to wait for the next real Elderscrolls for like 5 years. (Not that I′m through with Skyrim, yet)
If they′d ask me. Just leave the engine, interface and features as they are
and just add regions with new plots and stories. Absolutely no need to reinvent the Game more or less from scratch
with each new Version.

Guys, it isn't in the game as a real area. It's just landscape without objects. So no, you won't be able to visit the Imperial city or Morrowind. At least, no as a real area. It'll just be a barren land of emptiness and low res textures.

However, it being there while not visible does raise questions as to why it's there at all. I think it's because at one time in development they wanted parts to be visible from Skyrim, much like a lot of parts outside of Cyrodiil were visible in Oblivion. But at some point they decided to wall off Skyrim with mountains.

Another option would be, as others suggested, that they made it to be possible areas for DLCs. I personally would love to visit a part of mainland Morrowind as part of a DLC, but we'll have to wait and see.

Maybe it's just because giants tend you beat you very (very!) high in the air and while you are rising upwards you may want to see something of the other provinces before you the game reloads.

Actually in Infernal City only boiling sea is left of Vvardenfell. And even if it didn't explode into bits, it would have lost it's top, like on the Vezuvius picture posted before.

Spoiler
And I had no geology classes in school :whistling:

Well we'll know more when CK is out i bet some team will start working on massive mod to make it true.

Im only interested is engine able to handle so much terrain that would be massive terrain + content in it
im not even sure how game handles terrain never tryed to explore deeper in terrain editing but as i said we'll know is it possible when CK is out

I can see my old house in Imperial City from here!

Its just a landmass nothing to get too exited about. I'm pretty sure that they wont make a High Rock or Morrowind DLC, because Oblivion also had huge amount of landmass outside of Cyrodiil but we never got any DLC in there.

According to the lore it destroyed the entire island. So a volcanic erruption of that size usually just leaves a crater.
Just see what′s left of the former Islands after the Krakatoa or San Torin erruption.

..concerning geology...
