To prove the point, Fallout 3 was actually somewhat smaller than the full map of Oblivion, but unlike the border zones confining you to Cyrodiil, you could go almost anywhere within that square of the map in Fallout. Add a load of interesting things to stumble across and a labyrinthine underworld (I still havent fully explored all of the Metro tunnels, and I had that game since it came out.), and Fallout 3 was simply more expansive and interesting to play. I recall a time where I just decided to screw all and romp through the wilderness, and finding an Outcast outpost, after spending an hour crippled with no stimpacks getting chased around by mutated wildlife and crazy raiders in the middle of the night, etched into my memory forever.
