Skyrim crashes when going through door

Post » Sat Nov 17, 2012 8:34 am

I recently started making a player house mod. I made the building itself and tested it multiple times and everything seemed to work fine. But after I added a bunch of stuff inside the house, I loaded up the game and tried to exit the house via the front door and the game just crashed. It now does this every time you try to exit the door.

At the time, the other door was just floating in Whiterun. I replaced the doors and tried moving it to Windhelm with no fix to the crash. Finally, the crashes stopped when I moved the door just outside of Whiterun in Tamriel.
Now, however, I have decided to make an exterior cell for my home, sort of a small town outside of the regular game. I linked the door from the house to the one in the new area and, once again, the game crashes whenever you activate the door inside the house.

I would gladly provide a link to a YouTube video of the inside of my house, but MOST unfortunately, I am disallowed to post links. =\ Therefore, if you would like to see it, search my username (AxelXeron) on YouTube and go to my Skyrim video.

The following are my computer specs (although those are most definitely not the issue):
AMD Phenom II x6 3.3 gHz processor
10 GB of RAM
ATI Radeon HD 6970 GPU

I really have run out of ideas on how to fix this. The crashes are hindering my progress in completing my mod, so I would GREATLY appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks.

Thanks for the response, but I have a counter-suggestion: learn some tact. Btw, that didn't work.

  • Are you loading the same SAVE game every time? (if you are, stop it and, from Main Menu, COC to a cell to start a "blank" game ... Does it work?)
  • Are the Green Triangles, from the yellow door boxes, sitting nicely on your Navmesh (exterior and interior)?
  • Navmesh ... Is it finalised? If it is exterior, is it playing nicely (can you COC to your new-town cell?) ... though that should not effect the PC anyway ... just NPCs
I can't think of much else at the moment ...

@h4vent Thanks for the response. I checked and reworked the navmesh and finalized it. I can COC to both the exterior and interior without problem. From the exterior I can enter the house without a problem, but it still crashes just as before when you attempt to exit the house.

The only report of CTD when exiting from Interior-to-Exterior that I have seen is the bug (and fix) discussed in the linked-post, above.

That's basically a memory issue ... Which means your interior has too much stuff in it ... And the game falls over on memory-allocation when trying to go from it to rendering an exterior cell.

Is your house very well cluttered?
Are you using RACKS and/or Manniquins in it?

(Both of those things seemed to have caused many problems ... And the manniquins stuff was altered - by Beth - in 1.6. I might remove any such things, if you have them)

I can't think of anything else which would effect you ... Your testing shows that it is only when entering your exterior from your interior that the CTD occurs ... So it must be something to do with the unloading of the interior cell ... Unless someone else knows of another related bug?

You say you tested going from your interior to a vanilla "walled town" cell (a couple of them?) and to a "wilderness" cell ... no CTD occurred in the wilderness cell? ... So it appears for all the world like the memory issue

I don't have any kind of racks or mannequins in the house. The only clutter is in the kitchen and, compared to the clutter that is everywhere else in the game, it's minimal.

I decided to just break the house up into levels, each level with its own cell. It seems to have fixed the problem. Thanks for your help.
